The money men behind Tevez imo wanted as much as they could get for him (they were probably happy to do a deal with the new big spenders with possible more deals to come down the line as well), and we simply didn't have the funds to compete for this signing.

I actually think that is a correct assessment; he never really seemed keen..and if anything it wsa obably more of an attempt to drive the price up.
Staying in Manchester would have been a bigger priority.
Having said that, Vladders is perfectly right that the 'we're skint' lament wears a little thin considering the monies we have spent on players who have been 'disappointing', shall we say.

we deal at a certain level and have todo the right deals for us, i.e Aquilani was not only one of the best midfielders we could sign but he also came on tick with payments spread so the lying yanks could take money out of the club to pay off their debt
Tevez is also on 150k a week or something daft, which is no where near what we could offer

At the beginning of the the season Johnson was much, much more influential than Gerrard and our only creative outlet. Get that Johnson back and he'll be worth every penny.
I have a greater issue with paying 40-50k a week on pointless cunts like Degen.
