Of course you can. I just did. And we could never have afforded Tevez. We're so fucking skint.
*Weeps*

I really thought he was a viable option at the time. He would have been a fantastic signing, I am still convinced we could have got him for sensible money if Rafa had made a fuss of him.
We did spend over £30million in the summer, half of which we have seen no value for as yet, and the other half was aright back.
There is some real comedy in the Carlos Tevez to Liverpool thread, I have just looked back at.
Someone who shall remain nameless said words to the effect, why would we want him he's just the same as Kuyt, and others fucking agreed. (I did point out the error of their ways at the time 😉 )
Hat trick tonight gives him 9 goals in 18 games, and I bet his assists record isn't too shabby.

Indeed, Vlad. I wanted us to get him from West Ham however he does seem somewhat mentally unstable.

Senator Davis, can you please comment on the proposed signings of Kenwyne Jones or the suggestions that Nik Bendtner would be a better option?

What do you think of them as footballers Senator?

Hasn't he got 12 League goals now this season? 15 total? I remember that thread, comical to say the least. That's Bent and Tevez who aren't good enough for us yet have 25 Prem goals between them now.

Tevez would have come here, had we pursued him strongly enough. Presumably, we didn't. As for signing him from West Ham, that never would have happened. They were looking to offload a striker and a defensive midfielder so guess which one we were interested in.

My fav was Keane is better than Tevez,

Tevez is an exceptional footballer and when played shows it week in week out. He would have been a massive hero if he had come here.

Yeah, isn't he going to quit football altogether after the World Cup? :🙂

And that nonsense about shouting in Ferguson's face was just embarrassing. Although I do agree that he'd be an excellent foil for Torres.

Spider neil and rage made total divs out of themselves in that Tevez thread. I'm sure there was another one that was incredibly long as well.

But the fact is, he was nailed on for Man City before he'd even left United. It was a done deal.

For as much as I wanted us to get our hands on Tevez at the time I must admit at this point I think we need someone big, strong and tall.

With Maxi coming in (is this on btw?) we are seemingly settled on the wings and in the hole for now I reckon, hence we've got to find ourselves someone's capable of leading the line whenever Torres' not around. Tevez doesn't match that bill at all. At least not with the way we're playing.

Kuyt....Benayoun....Gerrard.....Maxi....Riera......Babel

£25m and huge wages were the reasons why we never had a chance of landing Tevez.
Yet we paid £18m for a crocked midfielder and a similar amount for a right back who is more a right winger.
I wonder if we had signed Tevez and not the other two , if we had been in a better position right now?
I think so.
I am not sure if it was such a done deal Bren, he was making very encouraging noises to us in the early stages

Who knows Vlad.

But to suggest that we didn't get Tevez due to "Rafa not making enough of a fuss of him", is a little crazy no?

I wasn't suggesting that. I was suggesting that if we were interested , and had the money we could have had him, and possibly at less than he went for

The thing about Crouch that annoyed me, was the fact that he despite his tall figure wasn't strong at all, as well as he was extremely one-paced. He rarely ran past defenders and that's a very important skill if you're going to be left alone upfront imo. He was rather bad in the air as well mind, often squandering good chances.

As I remember Kenwyne Jones he's at least got some acceleration. And I know Bendtner has as well as decent overall speed too as well as beeing extremely good in the air.

Sorry then my mistake.

I still think though that looking back on this transfer we never had a chance. The money men behind Tevez imo wanted as much as they could get for him (they were probably happy to do a deal with the new big spenders with possible more deals to come down the line as well), and we simply didn't have the funds to compete for this signing.

What Steve Bruce says:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=724148&sec=transfers&cc=3888

"On his day I think you can look at Kenwyne and say he's worth £40 million, then on another day you'll think: 'come on you'. That's Kenwyne," Bruce added. "We've got to get him to a level where with his ability, he could play in any team. I can understand what Roy was saying. The thing for Kenwyne is for him to grasp the nettle.

"To be a Chelsea player, or a Man U player, Liverpool player, what makes them stand out is they can perform at a level week in, week out.

"It's a level a lot of players find difficult to get to. They're the demands of a huge club and we've got to try and get Kenwyne like that, because when he is playing at his best, he is a fantastic footballer.

"He tests you. He tests your skills as a manager. He's a big, genuine, nice lad, an easy-going, gentle boy. It's always the challenge - to get the best out of him. The ability is there."

Doesn't sound like a player who'll do well here.
Possibly another Babel?

I agree with Fat Head, the ability is there with Jones.
Whether it can be coaxed out is another matter.
I wouldn't fancy Rafa doing it, thats for sure.

Harry Redknapp is great at getting the best out of the players on his books. I think that's why he does so well on the transfer market.

I actually think that is a correct assessment; he never really seemed keen..and if anything it wsa probably more of an attempt to drive the price up.

Staying in Manchester would have been a bigger priority.

Having said that, Vladders is perfectly right that the 'we're skint' lament wears a little thin considering the monies we have spent on players who have been 'disappointing', shall we say.

Considering Kuyt had just completed a very good season, that's a touch harsh, Vladders.

As I recall, Tevez hadnt scored that many more than Kuyt.

Having said that, I did want him here for 2 reasons..

I wanted to see us return to 4-4-2, and more importantly, I'd seen the MSI shenanigans and looked on enviously as the Hammers unveiled those 2.

When we got Mascher I desperately wanted to see Tevez here as well, as seeing him at the Scum was heart-breaking..considering the wealth of strikers the wankers already had at their disposal.

Oh well.

Why on earth anyone would want us to retreat to a 4-4-2 after second half of last Seasons showing is well beyond me.

Not at all, as the saying has it, form is temporary class is permanent.
The more astute of us knew that Dirk may have been having a bit of a purple patch for some of last year, a purple patch incidently, where he was still not much more than average, and that Tevez had been in and out of the team and was clearly unsettled.
It's like comparing chalk and cheese
