Neil Ruddock has labelled Luis Suarez’s bite on Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic as “disgusting” and urged the Football Association to severely punish the Uruguayan just as they did Manchester United legend Eric Cantona for his infamous 1995 kung-fu kick at Crystal Palace.

The Liverpool striker, who has been no stranger to controversy throughout his career, bit the Serbian’s right arm midway through the second half in Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw at Anfield.

The incident was not seen by referee Kevin Friend and the forward went on to net a dramatic injury time equaliser to deny Chelsea three much-needed points in the race for Champions League qualification.

Suarez apologised in the aftermath of the match and has been fined by the Merseyside club, who were swift to condemn the 26-year-old’s actions.

The FA is now investigating the incident and is almost certain to act.

Former defender Ruddock, 44, made over 150 appearances for Liverpool between 1993 and 1998 and he has urged the governing body to make an example of Suarez.

The Londoner, who also had spells at Millwall, Tottenham, West Ham and Crystal Palace during his playing career, told London24: “I think they should chuck the book at him – it’s childish and disgusting.

“He’s got a bit of a record and there’s kids watching.”

Eighteen years ago, former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona was banned for eight months after he attacked an Eagles fan in the stands at Selhurst Park, and Ruddock believes Suarez deserves a similar punishment.

He said: “Liverpool can’t sack him because he’s worth about £15 to £20million but the FA should throw the book at him like they did with Cantona when he jumped into the crowd and kicked someone.”

Probably pissed off at the nature of how the fine came about but if Suarez is being truly contrite here I think using the word "exploitation" is a bit over the top.

Honestly, before Ayre's announcement, I was thinking that we ought to fine Suarez, and have that money sent to one of the Hillsborough support groups. So I was glad when Ayre announced that Suarez's fine was going to the HFSG.

But I'm totally ashamed of myself now after that telling off by that twitter; I thought the money would be better spent going to them but I suppose I have to change my mind now and suggest that we use it to upgrade the dental facilities at Melwood.

David Cameron aswell. The worlds gone mad.

Neil Ruddock, Souness and Lawrenson should all keep their pieholes shut

We stood by him throughout the whole racism saga and he repays us by biting an opponent. Never mind his "fiery" nature, or hotheadedness - this is the behaviour of a petulant child. He's let us down massively, and if we stand by him then we are essentially condoning it. It's a delicate situation, because we have to protect our investment, but if we can get an inflated fee for him then I think we should let him go. He's like a stain on this football club.

It was clearly the clubs idea to give it to Hillsborough and they just said it was Luis' to help him save face.

And am I the only one who thinks there is no comparison between this incident and the Cantona affair, not even in the same league. I wouldn't even class it as badly as Rooney's elbow on McCarthy, or Ben Thatchers on Mendes.

ITS FUCKING NOTHING. Those scopey cunts hawksby and Jacobs are intimating it should be a 10 match ban.
It was nothing. Ivanovic said he isnt arsed, there was no teeth marks, Chelsea arent arsed.
I know the FA are prone to going apeshit but fuck them and fuck everyone else.
Suarez and Sturridge are going to batter fuck out the oppo next year.

We've (rightly) condemned his actions publicly and fined him 300 big ones. I don't think we have any obligation whatsoever to do more than that.

Suarez plays the pantomime villain so we shouldn't be surprised when everybody reacts accordingly.

Other players do similar things, sure, and the reaction isn't the same, but with Suarez it's the whole deal - the niggles, the playacting, the handballs, the racism incident... it's no wonder that everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Why wouldn't they? He gets everyone tuning into the radio, buying papers and the rest of it. Suarez = ratings.

If Suarez limited it to diving and cheating a la Drogba (although Drogba's incessant cheating was helped by playing for the London club of the moment and Mourinho being a media darling) things wouldn't be nearly as bad.

I'm not bothered by most of the things Suarez does really and I'm quite happy to defend him. It's just that these kind of incidents are pretty tiring to go through as a supporter.

No, you most certainly are not. The garbage being spouted over this whole issue is quite extraordinary. I'm only sorry some on here are peddling it as well.

But he'll get a 7-10 match ban regardless. The media coverage on this is insane and the FA will punish him with all they've got.

If normal people were in charge he'd be out for the season, but as its the FA he'll most definetly miss the first 3-4 games next season aswell.
Which in itself is a fucking travesty when Dempsey, Aguero, Ferdinand, Wilshere, Mirallas, McManaman etc have gotten away with some bad incidents this season.

Erm...I would like to apologise on behalf of everyone in Boston for this heinous act which has tarnished the covering folder of our commercial portfolio and caused what I hope will only prove a temporary degree of static at our premium interfacial porting hubs. I want to assure you that this business/leisure franchise will not tolerate any employee upsetting Sky Sports, and we have moved quickly to ensure that the FA is in a proactive position to destroy Suarez as completely as possible. Our Glorious Leader Mr Henry has made it clear that he will not be shaking Suarez's hand if Suarez should ever fly over to where Mr Henry is, and Mr Werner has stated quite categorically that there is no chance of Suarez ever having a sitcom idea green-lit, even if Charlie Sheen is signed up as lead. As far as my own response is concerned, I have overseen the removal of Suarez's teeth by the club doctor:

These will now be donated to our club Mascot, Mighty Red, who will use them to entertain children and pensioners at club fun events, of which, let me assure you, there will be many. If there is anyone left who wishes an apology, let me apologise to them now. I hope this reassures everyone that, at this club, you'll never crawl alone.

Comparison to Cantona is crazy. For punishment on precedent they might link this to Barton's ban last year. I think 6-8 games for this. Anything more would be wrong. Even 6 games is excessive, given no bite marks (and yes, that does matter).

Again, there is no comparison to Barton, I think at the time they said they gave Barton 3 games for each act of violence he committed, Suarez committed one, it should be three games.

It's all not worth the hassle.

Why bother what Lawro et al say? Let them spout their shite.

I'm not arsed. We have to keep him. He's our best player.

End of.
