Liverpool and Jordan Henderson want his switch to Anfield completed by Wednesday.
That's the day the Sunderland midfielder flies to Denmark with the England squad for the Under-21 European Championship, and he does not want concerns about his future to be a distraction during the tournament.
The only thing stopping Henderson becoming Kenny Dalglish's first summer signing is his fee and Liverpool are confident of reaching a compromise with Sunderland after increasing their offer to £15million - just £3m short of the asking price.
Dalglish does not want Henderson's transfer dragging on into next month and is keen to have him at Melwood for the first day of Liverpool's pre-season training.
SUNDERLAND officials have spelled out their determination to keep both Lee Cattermole and Jordan Henderson, despite Liverpool’s mounting interest in the midfield duo.
However, with Cattermole’s contract understood to include a clause that potentially enables him to speak to prospective suitors, it remains to be seen whether the Black Cats can keep both players this summer.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is hoping to make at least one transfer breakthrough next week, and has instructed his club’s hierarchy to make inquiries into the possible availability of Cattermole and Henderson.
To that end, there has been contact between Anfield and Wearside on at least two occasions this week, although the discussions are understood to have stopped short of a formal bid being lodged.
Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn and manager Steve Bruce are fully aware of the extent of Liverpool’s interest, which has strengthened in the wake of a series of positive reports from the club’s North-East scout, Alan Harper.
Liverpool’s valuation of Henderson is believed to be higher than their price assessment of Cattermole, but the Reds have been monitoring the latter for more than a season.
Bruce was expecting interest in both midfielders this summer, but remains extremely reluctant to part company with either.
Henderson is still at an extremely early stage of his development, and while a senior England debut last autumn underlined how highly he is rated, Sunderland’s backroom staff believe he will only get better.
Cattermole is at a much more advanced stage of his career, but is still just 23, despite having made more than 150 Premier League appearances.
He was Bruce’s first signing as Sunderland manager and retained the captain’s armband last season despite his disciplinary problems, underlining the depth of the relationship between manager and player. Cattermole is, however, deeply ambitious, and a move to a Liverpool side hoping to compete for a Champions League place next season would appeal.
Sunderland are hoping their skipper’s head will not be turned, but Bruce will be willing to hold a series of one-to-one talks if he feels Cattermole needs reassurances about the direction the club are heading in.
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is making old boy Alan Harper a new 'signing' as a talent-spotter to land future British talent.
Hodgson has snapped up Harper from Bolton Wanderers and given him a senior role as a spy on his staff who will be told to find new players for the next window and beyond.
Harper played for Liverpool and Everton and his knowledge of domestic football will be an asset at the Kop where they have relied on recruiting foreign players in recent years.
Wanderers have let Harper go to Anfield, where he will be in a 'senior' position and will report directly to Hodgson as Liverpool try to improve their ability in earmarking talent for the first team.
[/quote]A winger by trade, he was never anywhere but wide on the right throughout his youth days, and indeed at Coventry it was on the wing where he impressed.
But Bruce has recognised Henderson's natural physique, an all-around athlete whose engine he obviously feels is wasted out wide.
Indeed Henderson has now moved into central midfield and has taken to the role like a duck to water. His excellent close control and skill means he has the raw material to make it in the engine room.
Whilst his tackling is a work in progress, it is far from being a weak link in his game, but his willingness to cover almost every blade of grass on the pitch means he rarely needs to dive in to a challenge.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish will offer to pay Jordan Henderson FOUR TIMES his Sunderland salary in a desperate bid to hijack the England starlet’s expected switch to Manchester United this summer.
Dalglish hopes to agree a fee with Steve Bruce’s club and reckons he is closing in on a deal worth up to £16million with the Black Cats.
Henderson is reported to be shocked by developments, particularly Liverpool’s proposal to hand him a £65,000-a-week contract, when he currently gets £15,000.
But United boss Sir Alex Ferguson still reckons he is the one holding all the aces in the race. He is considering swap and loan deals with his former skipper Bruce after talks last week. Ferguson has asked to be kept informed if the Wearside club decide to cash in on £20m-rated Henderson, who is heading to Denmark this summer as a key member of Stuart Pearce’s Under-21 side.
Bruce is desperate to land Old Trafford midfielder Darron Gibson as well as experienced defender Wes Brown – and they could form part of a swop deal.
The key to the deal could be Ferguson’s stance on Danny Welbeck, with Bruce wanting to take the highly-rated youngster on loan again.
England striker Welbeck spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light and impressed.
Ferguson is still weighing up the best options for the 20-year-old having initially told him to report back to Old Trafford and prepare to go on the club’s summer tour to America.
But having handed Michael Owen another one-year deal, Welbeck’s situation is under review – and Bruce hopes he can grab him again on a long-term loan.
