Ryan - what do you reckon of James McCarthy?
Looks good.

I reckon we should have signed him 2 odd years ago for bugger all when we had the chance.

£13m-£18m is big money for an unproven 20 year old. Not saying he won't go on to become a top midfielder but these figures quoted are surprising.

Furthermore, what are we supposed to do with our other young midfielders - Spearing who's recently signed a new deal, and Shelvey who is tipped to have a big future at LFC, Kenny's a big fan by all accounts.

In the years to come we might kick ourselves that we didn't go for this lad, but i just don't think we need a player like him at this present time.

There are concerns at Liverpool that United could muscle in on the Henderson deal. The player is represented by Neil Fewings, the same agent who oversaw Darren Bent's move to Aston Villa. There would be disquiet among Sunderland fans if he was allowed to leave but an offer of around £20m would be difficult for the club to turn down.

We could be just getting involved in the Henderson thing in order to drive up the price and fuck up Man Utd to piss them off and give them a warning that we won't sit there and take the Adam/Young shit. Especially the Adam shit,

Is he any good on the right?
A winger by trade, he was never anywhere but wide on the right throughout his youth days, and indeed at Coventry it was on the wing where he impressed.

But Bruce has recognised Henderson's natural physique, an all-around athlete whose engine he obviously feels is wasted out wide.

Indeed Henderson has now moved into central midfield and has taken to the role like a duck to water. His excellent close control and skill means he has the raw material to make it in the engine room.

Whilst his tackling is a work in progress, it is far from being a weak link in his game, but his willingness to cover almost every blade of grass on the pitch means he rarely needs to dive in to a challenge.

I'm underwhelmed by the Henderson link. I think I saw him only twice so I've no idea what I'm talking about but I suspect he's just overhyped because he's young and English.

Shot down by Koptalk.

Various individuals are today claiming that Liverpool have agreed a £12.5million bid with Sunderland for midfielder Jordan Henderson.

According to our sources, there has been no such bid (at the time of writing) and no such agreement exists. Liverpool are not negotiating with the player's club today.

Liverpool have scouted the player several times but today's claims are untrue and should be dismissed at this time.

Yes dunk has all the right inside sources..

Interesting.

There was huge talk about him in January re a move to man city for 20m odd. Then he made his England debut, played shit and everybody forgot about him.
My dad is a lifelong sunderland fan so I watch quite a bit if them due to some random affinity. He's a good player, Subderlands best, and when they were fucking useless over the last 3 months of the season he was the only one doing anything. Playing-wise, he's like a young Gerrard; Marauds all over the place, scores goals, and is a big crowd favorite.

He's got a lot to learn though so we're not buying the finished product here.

Still, I like him and that should be enough for everyone. Good signing if it happens.

I don't get this - you complain about signing an average midfielder (Barton) and very capable CM (Adam), and then say this is a good signing? Where will he play? Ahead of Lucas/Gerrad/Raul? On the right ahead of Kuyt? I've not watched him enough to confirm what you say wrt talent (He always seems ok to me), but he's never stood out as a 12.5 million player (who gives a crap what Citeh want to spend, they over spend by 50-100% on most of their targets).
I rate Henderson above Barton and Adam that's why.

I've never said we don't need extra midfielders. I have said though that we don't need shit extra midfielders.
Where would you play him then? Ahead of Lucas or Kuyt or Raul?

Stop me if you've heard this one before.

'Our best 11' happens on paper alone.

Do you think Ferguson looked at the names Scholes, Carrick, Anderson, Fletcher and Giggs and thought "fuck, how are 5 players going to fit into 2 central midfield positions"?

He didn't.

Gerrard got injured last year, we sold Mascherano, and Jay Spearing had to play in central midfield. No harm to Jay, he's a decent sort and a solid pro, but he's nowhere near good enough to be figuring in the central midfield of a title-aspiring side.

We need players that will come in, improve on what we've got, and add something we either don't have already or prove better than what we have.

Henderson is a very good player already, with the potential to be a star.
Box to box midfielder who has got everthing in his locker. For 13-14 mill £ thats a very good signing.

Skysports.com can confirm that Sunderland have rebuffed an approach from Liverpool for midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Manchester United and Manchester City had both been keeping close tabs on the England international.

But Liverpool have suddenly made a surprise move for the talented young midfielder, who can play out wide or in the middle.

Kenny Dalglish is clearly looking to invest heavily this summer and Henderson has emerged as one of his top targets.

It is understood the Anfield outfit's initial interest would have seen them willing to pay £13million, but Sunderland have rebuffed their advances.

The Wearside outfit, though, may be willing to do business at a much bigger price - £20milllion plus - as they have their own midfield targets.

Skysports.com understands one of those is Manchester United's Darron Gibson, and Steve Bruce is ready to approach his former boss Sir Alex Ferguson over his availability and also that of defender Wes Brown.

Henderson to the mancs looks pretty nailed on if this is the case

That might depend on how the player himself sees things. He might think he has more of a chance of regular first team football with us, and that would be a big factor for someone who's just won his first international cap.

Re: Re: Jordan Henderson

Would he be more of a regular player here than united? As I see it they have as many midfielders as us. Think he'd choose united over us. Bruce will be whispering sweet nothings in his ear

LIVERPOOL are the latest club to be linked with Jordan Henderson, although their interest will not alter Sunderland’s stance over the midfielder.

Reports today suggested Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is preparing a £13million move for the 20-year-old, who will line up for England in the U21 European Championships, in Denmark, later this month.

But Sunderland have not received a bid for Henderson and have no interest in selling a player who started all but one of the club’s Premier League games this season.

The Black Cats will not be surprised to learn of Liverpool’s interest, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all keeping tabs on Henderson.

But Sunderland are determined to keep hold of one of their prize assets and, in any case, would not contemplate selling the midfielder for £13m.

Boss Steve Bruce has stated publicly that it would take a bid in excess of £20m to even consider letting Henderson leave the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have shown they can play hardball in the transfer market after recouping £24m from the sale of Darren Bent and they know Liverpool will pay over-the-odds for players after Dalglish splashed out £35m to land Andy Carroll from Newcastle.

Henderson himself is not looking to leave Sunderland either and remains happy to be playing regular first-team football for his hometown club

So he claims 😛

Of course there are going to be exceptions to the rule and a bit of clearing up here and there as the summer progresses, but right now I believe he's working on at least one major coup, and I'm not talking about overpriced, young English fodder such as Jordan Henderson. At the time of writing, despite the cleverly worded articles by the media, I don't believe we have (at the time of writing) made any formal offer for him. An enquiry yes, but there's no way in a million years we will meet Sunderland's current asking price and neither should we, good player or not.

So far this window, Liverpool have given up on on Gary Cahill (financial reasons, turned to Scott Dann instead) and Scott Parker (Kenny pulled rank). We're still locked in negotiations for James McCarthy and Ashley Young. McCarthy's valuation is still far too high while the door hasn't been closed on Young despite the media having reported every day for the last week that he's opted to join the Scum. I still believe that Comolli fancies Stewart Downing more than Young but I can understand why he's sniffing around both.

It's impossible to touch on every player that we've been linked with as I'd be here all day. I will conclude by saying that you should just buckle up and enjoy the ride. Be patient, the club got an early start and they're working daily to strengthen the squad. An early start doesn't mean that we won't drag things out but we must never roll over and say "OK then, here's your £20million for Henderson". Absolute madness. We have to be patient and let these clubs know that we have other options, which is why we haven't given in to Blackpool for Charlie Adam. It'll be our way or no way, simple as.

Andy Carroll's transfer fee is going to be a millstone around our necks for a very long while, which is the consequence of reckless purchases aimed at making a statement.

Anyway, I hope we dont bother with Henderson anymore.

Fathead was of the view that Matthew 'England International' Upson was worth 15 million pounds some 4 years ago, so he has previous for stupidity.

Next.

82 – Only four players created more goalscoring chances in the 2010/11 PL season than Sunderland's Jordan Henderson (82). Target.

One of those four is... Downing

I guess we'll never know who the other three were.

Malouda (117), K Davies (91), Brunt (86) and Downing (85) 😀

Re: Re: Jordan Henderson

Good god....

*distracts mr henry from stats*

All those assisters score fuck all. Do you reckon if you put them all in the same team they'd just keeping teeing each other up indefinitely? They'd be like Arsenal then I suppose and everyone would love them.
