There are concerns at Liverpool that United could muscle in on the Henderson deal. The player is represented by Neil Fewings, the same agent who oversaw Darren Bent's move to Aston Villa. There would be disquiet among Sunderland fans if he was allowed to leave but an offer of around £20m would be difficult for the club to turn down.
A winger by trade, he was never anywhere but wide on the right throughout his youth days, and indeed at Coventry it was on the wing where he impressed.
But Bruce has recognised Henderson's natural physique, an all-around athlete whose engine he obviously feels is wasted out wide.
Indeed Henderson has now moved into central midfield and has taken to the role like a duck to water. His excellent close control and skill means he has the raw material to make it in the engine room.
Whilst his tackling is a work in progress, it is far from being a weak link in his game, but his willingness to cover almost every blade of grass on the pitch means he rarely needs to dive in to a challenge.
Various individuals are today claiming that Liverpool have agreed a £12.5million bid with Sunderland for midfielder Jordan Henderson.
According to our sources, there has been no such bid (at the time of writing) and no such agreement exists. Liverpool are not negotiating with the player's club today.
Liverpool have scouted the player several times but today's claims are untrue and should be dismissed at this time.
LIVERPOOL are the latest club to be linked with Jordan Henderson, although their interest will not alter Sunderland’s stance over the midfielder.
Reports today suggested Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is preparing a £13million move for the 20-year-old, who will line up for England in the U21 European Championships, in Denmark, later this month.
But Sunderland have not received a bid for Henderson and have no interest in selling a player who started all but one of the club’s Premier League games this season.
The Black Cats will not be surprised to learn of Liverpool’s interest, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all keeping tabs on Henderson.
But Sunderland are determined to keep hold of one of their prize assets and, in any case, would not contemplate selling the midfielder for £13m.
Boss Steve Bruce has stated publicly that it would take a bid in excess of £20m to even consider letting Henderson leave the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland have shown they can play hardball in the transfer market after recouping £24m from the sale of Darren Bent and they know Liverpool will pay over-the-odds for players after Dalglish splashed out £35m to land Andy Carroll from Newcastle.
Henderson himself is not looking to leave Sunderland either and remains happy to be playing regular first-team football for his hometown club

Of course there are going to be exceptions to the rule and a bit of clearing up here and there as the summer progresses, but right now I believe he's working on at least one major coup, and I'm not talking about overpriced, young English fodder such as Jordan Henderson. At the time of writing, despite the cleverly worded articles by the media, I don't believe we have (at the time of writing) made any formal offer for him. An enquiry yes, but there's no way in a million years we will meet Sunderland's current asking price and neither should we, good player or not.
So far this window, Liverpool have given up on on Gary Cahill (financial reasons, turned to Scott Dann instead) and Scott Parker (Kenny pulled rank). We're still locked in negotiations for James McCarthy and Ashley Young. McCarthy's valuation is still far too high while the door hasn't been closed on Young despite the media having reported every day for the last week that he's opted to join the Scum. I still believe that Comolli fancies Stewart Downing more than Young but I can understand why he's sniffing around both.
It's impossible to touch on every player that we've been linked with as I'd be here all day. I will conclude by saying that you should just buckle up and enjoy the ride. Be patient, the club got an early start and they're working daily to strengthen the squad. An early start doesn't mean that we won't drag things out but we must never roll over and say "OK then, here's your £20million for Henderson". Absolute madness. We have to be patient and let these clubs know that we have other options, which is why we haven't given in to Blackpool for Charlie Adam. It'll be our way or no way, simple as.
