Jordan Henderson - What am I missing ?

So i think i am probably in a very small minority on here who doesn't get the fuss over Henderson and thinks he's a pretty average player . So what am i missing ?

To me I just don't see enough from him , he doesn't influence the game that much, if at all really, and can be very anonymous . Don't get me wrong he's not totally useless , he's neat and tidy but
beyond that i see very little . He doesn't add much in the way of goals or major involvement in build up play ....he doesn't do much wrong but he doesn't do much to stand out . If he was a flavour he'd be vanilla.

So why do so many on here rate him ? Do you actually think his performances are good enough or are you just looking at little bits and thinking that he'll eventually mature into a very good player ? Hopefully he does do that but right now i don't think he's doing much . If he keeps his place when Gerrard is fit or is moved out right again then i'll be a little pissed off .

How fucking DARE you!

I think he's a good player now, & has the ability to be a tremendous player in a couple of years.

He has great vision, good eye for a pass, is very composed & makes space for himself simply & easily by running from deep.

That said, he's clearly at his best only when played in the centre. I've said before, his demeanour & movement reminds me of Lampard, which, despite his detractors, is very much a good thing.

He is the English Lucas.

That good?

I don't think we should be putting that much pressure on him personally.

Good post. Initially I had hopes that he might at least do a job for a while on the right, but he definitely improved after being switched into the middle.

[/quote]Hey, what have you done with Fabio you fascist pig?

At first I was wondering what we had bought, but there's been enough glimpses of class to keep me reasonably optimistic.

Buying him for the right of midfield was a mistake though.

On a serious note though, he's still finding himself as a player, it doesn't help that he's in an out of them team as it doesn't help him to establish what his role in the team is; I gess Lucas had the same problem for a while.

However, there's enough there to see he has the potential to be a to player; he's comfortable on the ball, always looks to play the ball, even from the back, rather than hoof. He's. Decent tackler, has lots of energy, works hard for the team, always makes himself available to receive the ball back and looks to get involved and has an eye for openings in the final third. I'm not saying he does all of the above brilliantly at the moment, he'd already be a world beater if that were the case, but he's shown some brightness in all areas. I think he's one we need to stick with and am confident he can become a top class player.

No one could tell Gerrard was gonna develop into what he has in those early appearances.

He's a far better player down the middle of the park as opposed to the wings so when our centre players are fully fit he's a sub or wide player which is not good, player for the future blah blah blah

I'd rather see Shelvey played to be honest.
Wonder how he would have done had he been used the same number of times as Henderson?

Gerrard played shitloads on the right and turned into a fucking monster.

Give him time.

Gerrard is a phenomenon though. Henderson isn't.

Yep. Like I said, he's similar to Lampard. There's no way Lampard in his early days would do well on the right.

Plus it's a differnt thing to be an established player who is confident and knows their role in the team and to then be played out of position as opposed to when you're still finding your feet as a young player

OOh.... i disagree there, OK to the level of superstardom its hard to say but i remember thinking Stevie looked a hell of a player in his very first game i saw him in tbh... I think Henderson has noticeably improved as the season has gone on and i'm pleased we have him. I don't think he has as much ability as Stevie had but then... who does?

I can also envisage him being pretty useful one day in the scoring stats...

I just wish i could say the same about Carroll and Downing.

I remember Stevies Anfield debut, watching him from the Kop & wondering if he'd translate his great form into the senior side, or simply slip round like a new born deer, as I always expected him to, so long & gangly were his legs at times he looked like he didn't control them.

Turns out within minutes he doesn't control them, football does. He stamped his authority on games very quickly & even before that he looked right at home.

Very few players do, some of the best ever didn't do that from the start, so just cos Henderson isn't that natural immediately is nothing to be worried about.

I don't think it was immediately evident that Gerrard would be great, he was brought on at FB early on when he has late sub appearances, but I agree we started to see glimpses of what he could be early on, those bursting runs and they way he started to impose himself of games; bu he was given the room to do that.

Our CM seems really jumbled at the moment, like nobody really knows what their role is, Adam seemed torn against B'burn like he didn't know when to stay and when to press forward, Henderson at the moment, although he's good at being available to receive the ball and make simple passes back to other players isn't really doing anything quite imposing enough. If he was told you're the offensive CM player who needs to impose himself that way, or even told that he was the DM, I think we'd see more from him.

He just looks like he's got the makings of a very good CM who can do it all mate. Give it a while and i expect him to produce his fair share of assists and goals as well.

I'm glad this came up again and I completely agree with you Kenny, infact it completely baffles me the amount of negativity around him, he looks the makings of a fantastic CM and last night he was our best player (not saying much). He looked classy, that ball he played to Drowning was just perfect, in Lucas played that way... you can finish the sentence.

Why does he get so much hate? Is it his price? I think people are expecting 16million player straight away when he was clearly bought for him potential value, although he's not that far off his value at the moment, considering whats gone for a similar price. He's definately going to make it and next season I hope our midfield is Lucas and Henderson.

I still think we overpaid for him, but I don't mind so much in this case because he will be here for a while and will develop into a decent player.

There's always been enough touches of class about him to be optimistic that he can progress here.

Re: Jordan Henderson - What am I missing ?

I thought Henderson was our best player yesterday.

He was easily, someone summed it up in the match thread perfectly, he looked very classy.

3 points off 4th Krump.

We win a game and Arsenal and Chelsea slip up, and all of a sudden it's looking pretty rosy.

I don't get the panic.
