Liverpool defender Glen Johnson insists he will be fit for Sunday's visit of Manchester United and believes Fernando Torres will be available for the game.

Reds manager Rafael Benitez has described his injury list as the worst during his five-year Anfield reign.

"The injury is a lot better, I will be all right for Sunday," said Johnson. who has been hit by an ankle injury.

"I think Fernando might be all right, but I'm not sure about Stevie," added Johnson, referring to Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool captain limped out of Tuesday's 2-1 Champions League defeat by Lyon with a groin injury, while striker Torres has also been struggling with groin problem.

The defeat was Liverpool's fourth on the trot in all competitions and equals their worst run since 1987.

Gerrard left the pitch midway through the first half of the tie against Lyon because of a recurrence of the groin injury he suffered while playing for England.

Winger Albert Riera needs a scan on a hamstring injury and teenager Martin Kelly, who deputised for Johnson at right-back against Lyon, picked up an ankle injury during the game.

Liverpool's Alberto Aquilani could play for the reserves on Wednesday against Sunderland reserves as he gets closer to a first-team debut.

The Italian midfielder has not played since having knee surgery before his £20m move from Roma in August but has been in full training for over a week.

Well, that's good news, although Torres may well get very lonely given that we've no midfield whatsoever.

Gerrard was taken off as a precaution last night, and it looked much worse than it actually was. Thats at least what I was told.

He'll make the bench at least.

Whoever plays, plays. But no possible team we put out is going to match up to the scums team, the whole lot of them are shot or shit one or the other. It's all on benitez to do something clever and figure out a way to win

Which he did last year under similar circumstances.

Rafa refuses to rule out Gerrard

Rafael Benitez has spoken about Steven Gerrard's groin injury, but refuses to say whether he will miss Sunday's game against Manchester United.

"I think it is the same problem," he said after the Lyon defeat. "He felt something, so he knew it was better to come off."

"It wasn't a risk. He wanted to play, the doctor said he was okay and he has been training for the last two days. Sometimes it is bad luck.

"It's too early, we'll have to wait and see with the doctor."

I read in The Times today that Rooney's missus' due date is Saturday and he could miss the game if the baby is a day late as he intends being at the birth (also there is an outside chance his calf injury might still be bugging him).

Last week I predicted we would lose to Sunderland and beat United and I still believe this, especially if Rooney doesn't play.

I was surprised to see Stevie back on the bench and dressed so soon on Tuesday. I suppose that could mean either he was ok and didnt need treatment or the injury was so bad there was no point in doing an assessment until next day. Either way he didnt look too happy

Why would he look happy when he had come off injured?
