Liverpool youngster Joe Gomez’s injury nightmare is finally over after he made his playing return following a year of rehabilitation.

Gomez, who suffered a cruciate knee injury in October last year, featured for 45 minutes as a strong Liverpool team played a behind closed doors friendly against Accrington Stanley on Merseyside today.

It is the first game of any kind the 19-year-old has played since Jürgen Klopp became Liverpool’s manager. Gomez was injured on international duty in the same week Klopp was confirmed in his post 13 months ago.

His second-half appearance at Melwood against the League Two side – a game Liverpool won 5-0 – was therefore the most significant step yet in his recovery.

He was not the only senior player involved as Klopp took the opportunity to keep his players fresh in the absence of Premier League football.

James Milner, Emre Can, Joel Matip, Lucas Leiva, Alberto Moreno and goalkeeper Loris Karius also played in the match. Teenager Rhian Brewster struck a hat-trick, with another youngster Harry Wilson among the scorers. Can also scored in the game.

Gomez will now be working his way to full match fitness in the hope of presenting Klopp with further defensive options.

The versatile defender suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage during England’s Under 21 international win over Kazakhstan 13 months ago.

It was a devastating setback for the youngster who had shone since moving to Liverpool from Charlton for £3.5 million during the summer of 2015. He made such an instant impression he began last season as the first choice left back.

Speaking before the latest international break, Klopp said care would be taken not to rush Gomez back into the first team.

“He looks really good at the moment, but it is a long way – he was injured for a long time and now it is a long way back, so there is no rush in it.,” said Klopp.

“He is still a young boy so we can give him time to come back in the right moment.”

Excellent news this. Very high hopes for the lad.

Brewster with a hattrick aswell. Him and Woodburn are two attacking talents that could really develop into something great.

You should try out one of those highly paid surveys, Hansern. I would if I was eligible.

Hahaha! Wouldnt surprise me if it turns out to be the other way around, and you have to pay something to register/answer....

Excellent news ! I really liked his play before he injury and hopefully he will make steady progress under Klopp. If that happens I expect to see him on the bench in the new year. Would be great if he can step up as to support to Milner / Lovren.

Who is Rhian Brewster ? I haven't heard much about him at all, it's been all Woodburn. That's a great start for him, a hat-trick he'll never forget.

16 year old striker player we signed from Chelsea a couple of years back. Plays for U18s for Liverpool & U17s for England. Recently scored a handful of goals for the England in an international tournament.

I wonder where he fits into Klopp's plans. He had some early success under Rodgers at left back, but his form dipped after the handful of games.

Could be because Rodgers played a right footed CB at left back.
He should go on loan, prove himself, and come back as a "new signing" for next season.

I'm really not convinced a loan is the right option. We should keep him with us and make sure his fitness is brought back slowly. I don't want another ings fiasco

He'll get games as we're a little light on the ground at cb

Just hope all the injuries at such a young age haven't Rob Jones'd him already.

My mate's cuz was captain of Tranmere aged 18 a few years ago, that time when they were top of League 1 and dead cert to be promoted. He was awesome... England under 21s and offers from prem clubs coming in, when he got injured around Christmas. He missed the rest of the season, they missed promotion (no team with a lead as large as theirs had not been promoted from that position in football league history before), and then got relegated twice on the bounce and out of the league altogether. As for Wallace... the staff at Tranmere didn't diagnose an ACL for a few weeks and had him training on it. Even though he managed to get signed by Barnsley and then Sheffield Utd, I don't think he's played a full game since. Such a massive shame, but prob happens a lot. Anyways, just hope that Joe has more luck.

Please don't mention Rob Jones ... absolutely gutted me (and of course a lost career and massive financial loss to him too), he was to be England's RB for the next few years .. sorted.

He's angling at another defender called O'Manob or something similar.
The resulting combination of Matip O'Manob would ensure commentator hijinx.
