Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs lead chase for £25m Lukaku, confirms Anderlecht Chief

Published 12:16 15/01/11 By Football Spy

Anderlecht have confirmed a trio of Premier League clubs are leading the race to sign teenage sensation Romelu Lukaku.

Speaking to Goal.com, general manager Herman van Holsbeeck also confirmed that it would take a bid of £25m to secure the starlet's services.

"Our price will be around €30m (£25.3m)," said van Holsbeeck.

"If you ask for between €20m and €30m for a footballer in Europe there are a maximum of 15 teams who can pay this amount. These 15 teams are all interested in Romelu Lukaku but it depends sometimes on what resources the team has at the time.

"We received one offer from an English club three days before the end of the August transfer period. It was €10m immediately and €10m in one year. We would not accept the offer because we want to keep the player."

Spanish giants Real Madrid are known to be one of those clubs monitoring Lukaku, but van Holsbeeck thinks that the player will most likely end up in the Premier League.

"For him the team is in England," he said.

"We have some managers who send people to inform us about the interest. It depends on the offers. We know that teams like Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool are interested in him and that they follow the player.

"There is some interest from Real Madrid but we know they are interested in every good young player.

"What for us is the right club? The Premier League clubs from the UK are the biggest clubs in the world with a lot of money."

From the Mirror "Mole" - quite possibly the most pointless piece of the transfer window so far.

Liverpool must be serious about rebuilding their squad.

Kenny Dalglish was appointed last Saturday, had his first game last Sunday and guess who was a visitor at their Melwood training ground last Tuesday.

Yes, it was super agent Pini Zahavi – the man with the best worldwide contacts when it comes to trading players.

Liverpool chase hardman Van Bommel
Kenny Dalglish is close to the first signing of his second spell in charge at Anfield, with Liverpool tabling a bid for Mark Van Bommel

Kenny Dalglish is close to the first signing of his second spell in charge at Anfield, with Liverpool tabling a bid for Mark van Bommel that meets Bayern Munich’s valuation of their defensive midfielder.

Van Bommel, the Holland captain, has been told he can leave Bayern for any club willing to pay €3m (£2.53m) for his services. Liverpool have made such an offer, although they face competition from AC Milan, who have also bid €3m. A number of other clubs are interested in the 33-year-old but only Liverpool and their Italian rivals have come forward with solid bids.

Van Bommel has long spoken of his desire to play in England, although the lure of AC Milan, who unlike Liverpool can offer Champions League football, is considerable.

Van Bommel has wanted to leave Bayern since the German giants refused his request for a new two-year contract earlier this season. He has just six months left on his current deal, hence his low price tag. With Bayern having signed another central midfielder, the Brazilian, Gustavo, from FC Hoffenheim, the Germans had entered the January transfer window willing to let Van Bommel go.

A snag has developed, however, in the shape of an injury crisis. Bayern’s chief executive, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, is expected to hold a meeting tomorrow with Christian Nerlinger, their general manager, and Louis van Gaal, their coach, at which a decision on Van Bommel’s future will be made. Liverpool’s case may be helped by the fact that relations between Van Gaal and Van Bommel have become strained.

Van Bommel, a former PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona player, was instrumental in getting Holland to the World Cup final and is seen as an experienced, combative performer who can give authority to a Liverpool midfield that has struggled this season after the departure of Javier Mascherano. Christian Poulsen and Raul Meireles have not convinced in the role Mascherano used to fill and Liverpool have once more relied too much on Steven Gerrard, who is suspended for today’s Mersey derby at Anfield. Van Bommel also brings a degree of passing ability, another quality Liverpool have lacked since Xabi Alonso left.

We do need someone in that role, but he's one of the players I hate most in world football. The last time I reacted like this to a potential signing was with Voronin. I hope we can do better.

He could easily have been sent off during the earlier games too. The guy used to have some skill in his locker as well, and I remember wondering during the tournament if his legs had gone and he was just not capable of anything more than clogging these days, so I don't want to find out he isn't after we sign him, our need for an enforcer notwithstanding.

So he's basically like Poulsen?

Just before the Villa/Brum game the commentary team mentioned Liverpool were rumoured to be after Downing (again). I found this in the Express.

LIVERPOOL are trying to tempt Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier to part with England winger Stewart Downing.
New Kop manager Kenny Dalglish believes Downing, 26, would give his side much-needed width and pace. Dalglish’s predecessor, Roy Hodgson, had also been eyeing Villa’s Ashley Young, 25, but it’s Downing who is on a shortlist of possible Kop signings during the transfer window. Liverpool believe Downing would come cheaper than his Villa Park team-mate at around £10 million.

Also on Liverpool’s radar is Wigan’s enigmatic Charles N’Zogbia, but it’s believed that manager Roberto Martinez is holding out for around £15million.

Liverpool flop Milan Jovanovic is following Roy Hodgson out of Anfield.

The Serb arrived on Merseyside last summer on a free transfer, but he has failed to live up to the reputation he built at Standard Liege as a prolific goalscorer.

He has scored twice from 17 appearances so far for Liverpool and a loan deal to Turkish side Trabzonspor should go through this week.

They want to take him for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent transfer if he makes an impact.

Jovanovic, 29, has failed to settle in England and his new side continue to struggle in the wake of Hodgson's sacking.

Pienaar to Chelsea by the looks of it, think Moyes said they'd accepted a bid from chelsea after turning down one from Spurs

Surprised at that.

We should have taken a punt on Pienaar. He is better than what we have which doesn't say much but a decent footballer all the same.

Great news on Jova if he is going on loan. Get shot of him and a few others asap!

Disagree. He's a cnut but he's tough, skilful and versatile, and he knows this league. Roman's tightened the pursestrings there so they don't have a lot to splash around anyway.
