Man City open talks over £50 million Van Dijk deal

Manchester City hope to continue their massive spending drive under Pep Guardiola with a £50 million move for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.

Wow, 50 mill £. Man City will have spent some insane amounts on centre backs if this go through. This one is boss though.

Further to Hanserns post, can't be a transfer window without being linked to a horrifically overrated Englishman.

Zaha is a very good player, but he's just not a very good team player. Extremely selfish and that's probably one of the reason he isn't at Man U

I thought he was unlucky at utd. He was in a poor team at the wrong time.

In the words of the great Alan Shearer*, "never mind".

* - when being told that the goal England conceded to Holland to make it 4-1 meant Scotland were eliminated from Euro 96 on goal difference.

Though it's borderline pathetic how we've stolen everything worth of talent in Southampton over the past years, there are at least three or four good reasons to keep going.

Their current keeper is better than we've got, I really like Forster (aka The Mountain). Their LB Bertrand is a wonderful attacking-minded wing-back that would suit Klopp's style no-end. Van Dijk has been their best player and somewhat a revelation. Looks so composed and calm. Him and Matip could be potential marvelous pairing.

And then there's Højbjerg, but let's give him another season in the South to prove himself..

86 league goals in 2016 compared to 48 in 2015.

If we score one more then it is a club record beating the record set in 1985.

Ox looks good on paper but he does he play more in a front 3 or part of the midfield 3? His injuries are a red flag too.

It could all be moot as it is unlikely Arsenal will sell to us.

Neither, I think Arsenal almost always play 4-2-3-1, so he plays on the wing of a front 4. In Klopp's system he would be expected to compete with Mane, so he would need to add a lot more goals to his game.

He might score more goals in Klopp's system. Or Klopp can reinvent him a la Lallana.

I like both the Ox and Promes (full disclosure: I've only seen highlights of the latter), both are talented players entering their best years and will give us exactly what we need – cover and competition for Mane. However, I might be wrong, but I don't think either of them has the hallmarks of a truly great player. So if we want to not just solve a short-term problem, but also take a stab at signing a player who can potentially become world class, I would still look in the direction of Julian Brandt. Well, I'd like Pulisic too, but he has no reason whatsoever to leave a quite ideal development situation at Dortmund.

It would be pretty unlikely for Brandt to leave Bayer in January, especially since he is very much a starting 11 player for the team. The only reason I can think he would leave mid-season is that working with Klopp is such a huge attraction for any young German player that Klopp can convince him that it's "now or never." I really think Brandt has maybe a 50% chance to become a real star player, of the level comparable to Thomas Muller or Reus – we should be all over this kind of potential.

======
There are very few decent highlights of him on Youtube, because Bundesliga is more aggressive than EPL in going after even smallest copyright infringement, but I found a good one that shows his work both on the left and right flanks in one game:

A good background scouting report from a few months back:

Didnt he want to leave Utd/City because of homesickness?
Guess over 600k a week in wages cures everything....

CONFIRMED: Carlos Tevez has officially signed for Shanghai Shenhua from Boca Juniors. He will earn £34.4m a season.
