I really don' think it would make any sense for him, after a month of brooding, not to push on and perform at his best. A shite season would damage his international career just when he was set to be established as one of the main men, and possible captain, and would also threaten any subsequent move he might want to make. There's no guarantee Barca would definitely come back for him if he really had a stinker of a season, and he'd probably get a less lucrative deal - his best chance of gaining some of the initiative is to have such a good season he'd be allowed to leave on his terms.

That comes after Liverpool definitively ruled out selling Barcelona’s priority target Philippe Coutinho. However, Coutinho has now submitted an official transfer request at Liverpool.
