"It's complicated"? -- No it isn't, fuck off Barca - £113 Million bid rejected

Quite. Barca are nice to watch but my god they stink as a club. People keep making out this kind of thing is no different to us with Southampton, but it is. Yes, all clubs tap up players, but Barca behave so outrageously there's absolutely no attempt to be discreet, they just blatantly ignore the club and the contract until they have broadcast the news that the player is ready to sign. How they get away with it time and again is a mystery. That's the club that should be penalised, and yet it never is.

It might be because they've had to make fewer transfers than other clubs thanks to their academy and reserves, and at the same time have never had home grown players wanting to leave them. That's changing in recent years, soon enough they'll be like everyone else having to sign their entire squad from elsewhere, learn how it feels for other clubs, get a taste of their own medicine, and then learn to tone their own shit down.

Fuck me, Barca are right arrogant cunts. At least when we're trying to sign players we are prepared to pay their market value and some.

They're horrible. I remember they wanted Mascherano for peanuts when he had a contract (and was Argentina captain) and got their players to say Liverpool were treating him like a slave.

Not that it mattered to us, but they were dicks when it came to getting Fabregas back too. Basically implying Arsenal should sell cheap because he spent time in their youth system.

Why in gods name would you go to Barca right now?

  • Change manager nearly every year.
  • Will always be a 2nd rate player behind Messi, Neymar & Suarez.
  • The rest of their squad is creaking and its showing... they are currently on a downward tragectory.
  • The Spanish league really is just a procession and the real quality tournament is right here.

A few weeks ago some people would have thought this was decent business (for sake of good order I don't want to sell him regardless) and somewhere over these weeks the world went crazy.... good if Barca backs out due to price.

Key here is not convincing Coutinho to stay regardless of who is interested (impossible), but rather that it is only reasonable for us to command an appropriate fee for him - and that if Barca genuinely value him, and want him as a pivotal member of their side, they will pay market value rather than fuck about.

That means we either get £90+ million, or are left with a player happy to tackle the season ahead rather than moping about.

I think it's harsh to say they change managers every year. Since Rijkaard they had Pep for 4 years and he was followed by Tito (?) who probably har stayed longer if not for the health issues. Then Martino one year and Enrique 3 years.

It's world cup year, so it would make no sense for Coutinho to down tools, and he's not that kind of character anyway. But it could be a watershed moment for us - FSG have gone to the trouble of getting a top class manager, and now they need to back him and his plans by holding on to a key player. They could get away with acting like a selling club before, but now they need to put a marker down, bring in our targets and keep Coutinho.

When full backs are going for 50 million then Coutinho should be regarded as a 100 million pound player. As we've seen with Keita and Leipzig it isn't the player or the buying club who get to set transfer valuations so Barca can do one if they think they can get him for 80 million Euros.
Smart work for a change by the club renegotiating Coutinho's contract without a buyout clause.

I've not paid as close attention to Barca in the last season or so but it seems to me that they're in a bit of a difficult situation.
  • Messi is getting older.
  • All does not appear to be well in the Neymar camp.
  • They've made a lot of costly mistakes in recent years and failed to invest wisely.
  • La Masia is no longer producing like it used to.
  • Their financial position is not particularly rosy if reports from recent years are to be believed.
  • They've hired a journeyman manager that probably won't have a lot of sway and had a lot of people questioning his appointment (= early pressure).
To make matters worse, the reverse is probably true for most of the points at Real Madrid. They've been buying very well in recent years and ended up with a a great young squad and a manager that everyone wants to get behind in Zidane.

We're not going to let Coutinho go for a "reasonable" fee and I can't think of any player swap deal off the top of my head that would leave me thinking we got a good deal out if it. For example, Rakitic is a good player, but they'll put a really high value on him, he's 29 and he'll want mega wages... that is if he'd even come.

I'd tell Coutinho to hold tight - it's a world cup year - see how Barca do this year with Valverde and take it from there.

I think thats a pretty decent play, give him the business angle - you're worth at least £100m Phillipe and you can go when they pay that, it's fair to you and us, if not you'll be staying. Might not do any harm to also remind him that he was their second choice apparently after Dybala.

Sell him after he has a really good World Cup and we'll get 150M. He won't down tools as he wants to be in the Brazilian squad. Van dijk doesn't have that problem as Holland aren't going to qualify anyway.

Great post. Can you ping this off to Coutinho please?

So you say they have trouble and identified Coutinho as the solution. Maybe we should ping this to FSG instead?

Liverpool insist Philippe Coutinho has not asked to leave the club despite increased confidence in Barcelona that a deal for the Brazilian can be struck.
Liverpool have rejected Barcelona's opening bid and told the Spanish club their star midfielder is not for sale.
Barcelona's sporting director Robert Fernandez and lawyer Andre Cury, who helped to sign Neymar, are understood to have held discussions with Coutinho's representatives in London prior to linking up with the team in Washington.

Philippe Coutinho, on tour with Liverpool in Germany on Thursday, is wanted by Barcelona
Spanish radio reports have since claimed Coutinho has asked to leave Liverpool though this has been denied by the Anfield club.
Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic has also been linked as a potential makeweight in negotiations but the player's camp have told Sportsmail they are not aware of any such negotiations and the 29-year-old is very happy at Barcelona after signing a new four-year contract in March.

Interesting, maybe this is what's meant when Barca say he would join them, could make sense that Coutinho would join them, but wouldn't force the move.

[article]Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says his side must learn to cope better when Philippe Coutinho is not on the pitch. The Reds suffered a dip in form last season when Coutinho was injured over Christmas and New Year.

In a press conference in Hong Kong, Klopp identified learning to play without the Brazilian as a key development aim, “Phil is a very, very important player but we need to react better when he’s not on the pitch, that’s how it is.

“He was out for a few games [last season] and then he came back and was not in the best shape. He tried to get his rhythm back. With his quality he has the opportunity under pressure to be on the pitch. Other players, you keep in training.

“But Phil, when he is able to run properly you want to have him on the pitch again. So we have to be better even in moments like this.” Klopp also says that Coutinho himself has room for improvement too.

“He can improve of course, in consistency. There’s no doubt about his qualities when he is in good shape – movements, very smart in both parts of the game, offensive tactics and also defensive tactics, that’s really important.

“He is a really good player. The nice thing is he is still young so he can improve. He has improved a lot already since I’ve been here, and he was good before I was here. He is in a good way.”

“Coutinho scored 14 goals last season and that was his best return. If Liverpool rate him at around £100m, what’s Dele Alli worth? He’s better than Coutinho. Different but better."
