"It's complicated"? -- No it isn't, fuck off Barca - £113 Million bid rejected

Why the fuck would we want 35 year old Rakitic? If Barca really want to sweeten the deal they should give us Suarez plus one of their young talents.

Suarez wouldn't move back I don't think ...
I am not really sure they have that kind of 'young talent' coming through ... which has been their problem the last 5 years (bar Thiago)

I mean Dennis Suarez 😉
Also El hadadi, Rafinha someone like that.

The thing that fucks me off most about this is that Barcelona appear to have the right to sign our best south American players entirely unchallenged. If / when Coutinho decides to leave I hope we pimp him all over Europe and sell him to the highest bidder. PSG, Madrid, Bayern, whoever wants him the most gets him.

I don't want us to become their Southampton and I'm a bit sick of Barcelona in general. I wouldn't mind a barren unsuccessful period for them, it's well overdue.

Reports in the media of £80m + Rakatic as the next bid.

To be fair, we can't seem to spend our money, so perhaps £150m isn't the answer.

Straight swap for Suarez + Rakatic. Done.
That's valuing Suarez at 80m, which at 30 years of age is more than a bit generous.

If we were resigned to losing Coutinho Rakitic would actually sweeten the deal somewhat. He isn't Coutinho of course, but if we were imagining playing Phillipe deeper this season anyway (behind a front 3), then he does have a lot of the attributes we would like to see, and is clearly a top player in his own right. Yes, he is 29, but he still has plenty of pace. He has played in excess of 50 games a season for Barca for the past 3 years so he is clearly very durable too. Rakitic won't be able to play a more advanced role like Coutinho as part of a front three and if we were to countenance the move then we would have to consider a top, or at least up and coming replacement.

I would rather this didn't happen at all, but if it did, taking Rakitic would make sense.

To be completely honest Rakitic would suit our midfield trio perfectly, but like you say we're trading a 25 year old for a 29 year, its not good business. Especially when we don't have a 20 year old in the squad ready to stake a claim in a few years.

Bringing in midfielders to the premiership at that age is very rarely a good move. He's used to a less physical league and at 29 isn't going to improve....could be in decline already. Fuck that its a shit move. Keep cou and sell him next season when he shines in CM so we can demand an even bigger fee.

He doesn't need to improve, he needs to just stay really fucking good– which he is. But you are right, he is used to a less physical league so there would be a risk. As I said, it is not the ideal, but if we are going to lose Coutinho anyway, then getting Rakitic plus a massive fee would not be a terrible idea IMO.

I'd like to hear what @keniget thinks, as I know he follows Barca closely.

We kept Suarez for another year because he was told he could do better than Arsenal and could wait for one of the giants. The problem with Coutinho is that Barcelona want him now and I honestly can't see how we can persuade him to stay.

Sure we can say he signed a new contract and he has to stick to it but that doesn't wash I'm afraid - if he is determined to go that's it, we just have to make sure they pay top dollar. I have a feeling the Mahrez link today has credibility.

Add Rakitic, Renato Sanches and throw some of Barca's money to clinch Keita and Van Dyck and then move on.

Is this actually happening? Should I panic or blissfully remain here with my head in the sand?

Good post Bj. Good points well made.

I also think Sanches could still become a really top player. Apparently he could be off to Milan in a £35m deal. For a 19 year old with that level of potential, that might be a clever move.

My immediate thoughts turn to Payet.

Dont think we'll sell regardless. But if the fee is ridiculous enough it might be worth considering.

I struggle more with how We'll replace him.

That fee is closer to what he's actually worth in this market, so it could well be a preemptive move leaking a figure on our part, to either ensure we get proper cash for him now if we think it's unavoidable, or so they know the minimum we'll accept next summer.

Aha. So you assume we are the smart guys in communication now?? That dementia cause definately doesn't need a testing phase ;-)

Quite. Barca are nice to watch but my god they stink as a club. People keep making out this kind of thing is no different to us with Southampton, but it is. Yes, all clubs tap up players, but Barca behave so outrageously there's absolutely no attempt to be discreet, they just blatantly ignore the club and the contract until they have broadcast the news that the player is ready to sign. How they get away with it time and again is a mystery. That's the club that should be penalised, and yet it never is.
