it may be a sell to buy summer

Its unlikely that we'll have a wholesale clear out. However, it is essential that this seasons first team players become next seasons squad players if we want to progress.

When the likes of Tony Barrett doesnt have a clue about whats going on I doubt to many know.
Loads of rumours about Villa before the leg break though.

Hopefully we'll be able to bring in 2-3 quality players. We dont need to spend big either, just look at Newcastle.

If you were a top quality European player, would you come to us?

Would you fuck.

So, we'll be in the same situation as last year; overspending on average players.

Should we not just go for the unestablished top quality european players then?

No, we've got a strategy of buying premiership proven players at 10 times they're supposed value so why break that for something much more risky and unproven?

It's going to be difficult, no more than it nearly always has been though, we've never really bought from the top bracket in European football. Torres is probably the exception in that he'd been mentioned alot for other big clubs, Masher was having his ordeal at West Ham, Alonso was more of a prospect than a nailed on top tier player and the rest we've developed into top players. When was the last time we really bought a top quality European player? You could probably name them on one hand.

Suarez came here on the back of probably the worst possible time we've had in the last 20 years on and off the pitch, so it's not a write off, but I agree, we'll need to look towards lesser proven players. As always.

it's going to really hard to attract top talent. no champions league, haven't finished in the top 5 for 3 seasons. 1 truly quality world class player and another who is ageing. the only way I can see us getting true quality is paying through the nose with regards to wages.
personally I'd take a chance on someone young, talented and hungry for example a swansea winger.

Yeah, I suppose that's true. We've only tended to get top tier talent in opportune circumstances when the fanfare has died down a little.

Alonso was quite a coup at the time. He led Sociedad to a title challenge, which is more than Martinez, for example, has done at Bilbao. Though I suppose Sociedad had just suffered a bad season in the league before he left.

I was watching a bit of A.Madrid last night and wondered why Falcao moved to them from Porto as although they pay more and play in a better league, they're destined to be a pretty hopeless sides.

personally speaking based on what I've seen this season I really don't think we are too far off. if we play to our strengths which in my humble opinion is our defense (for the first time in about 20 years I don't have a problem with any of the back 5) and our attack of suarez and gerrard in an advanced position I think we can really push on.

I think what we're missing is a CM who can effectively shield the defence and start attacks, ideal javi martinez but he isn't the only player in the world and I think we need someone who can effectly stretch teams with his directness and pace, ideally edan hazard but again he isn't the only player in the world (even raheem could fulfil this role if he bulked up). imho that is what we need and it would be good to go for the best but I'm sure we could pick up a coupe of players that fulfill these roles that are yet great but could be.

Far off from what?

Securing a place in the top four or a title challenge?

If it's the latter, a 29 point gap isn't solved by 2 players unless one of them is called Messi and the other Ronaldo.

I presume when you say "back 5" you include Agger in there. A great player but unfortunately we do well to get a half season out of him.

agger with coates as his understudy. basically I don't think we need to spend a penny on our defensive unit unless of course one of them is sold.

I agree but there's also a lot of natural improvement due to come from the current squad too.

Is there a lot of natural improvement due to come into the current squad in the areas we need? I hope this is right.

you'll get an instant improvement in CM with the return of lucas (providing he comes back as good as ever).
there is simply no way downing can go through TWO seasons with no goals or assists in the league.
you'd hope that we wont lose suarez for 8 games (unless through injury).

Ah I see what you meant. I thought you and Ross were talking about improvement coming from Youth/Reserve teams

I see the improvement coming mainly from Suarez and Carroll.

I think there's plenty more to come from Shelvey, Sterling, Henderson, Kelly, Coates. There's also Flanagan and Robinson. Kuyt could bounce back a bit next season too, Cole might do something for us - which is better than nothing at all that we've gotten from wide midfield / attack this season

I wouldn't expect anything from Lucas next season. He's going to be shit for at least the first half of the season. Downing will get worse IMO.

I think kuyt is going to be sold to free up wages.
difficult to call whether lucas will return to the level he was in the chelsea match, look at essien who had a similar injury.
I think downing will improve up until our run from hell he was getting better every week, peaking in the CC final.

Downing played his best two games of the season against Championship sides, wingers do not improve with age because they lose the ability to beat players as they get older.

Essien has been shit for ages so I'm not really sure what you're point is there, but if you want to look at players with knee ligament injuries they never return to 100% immediately. Look at the difference a year on from the knee injury Skrtel had.
