the effect of our absence from europe. it's something we've always had to deal with. didn't our title push come after being knocked out of the cl?

It's never really done United much harm as it? They've always been there or thereabouts in the latter stages and still managed to challenge for the title. Also games coming thick and fast can help a team gather momentum, waiting a week or two in between games can feel like a lifetime.

... Is that what the Sunderland draw suggests to you, skull?

I guess we'll not know until Jan at the earliest.

that's true about the waiting. but fitness can be a major factor at the end of games, as we say on saturday.

how could the sunderland game have anything to do with it?

I don't think we are underestimating it at all - we all know it will mean less injuries, fresher players and over the course of a full season strengthen our hand .. this is why I'm in DA. If we were in Europe then I wouldn't be.

True, I think it works both ways though, I think early on in the season it helps you build your fitness, especially when you've got a big squad aswell. The problem at the minute is too many players haven't figured much for whatever reason in preseason, what happens when they're drafted into the side and they're not match fit? At least with the early rounds in Europe it gives you the opportunity to get certain players upto speed in terms of fitness. Right now we're playing a game a week with players like Meireles, Maxi etc in desperate need of game time so that when they are needed in the league they're fit and ready.

The irony eh? We've had a shit squad for years and now in some positions it seems we've got too much and it could cost us in some ways.

our preseason is partly responsible for fatigue.

poulsen, cole, aqualini, insua - all played preseason and none of them included in the squad.
I only hope that in future preseasons we just concentrate on getting fit the people who will actually figure in the new campaign.
as for europe, agger is injury prone and carra is aging, one game a week will help them.
for the squad, not travelling half way round the world will help them.
results wise, even though we wont have and moral boosting victories to take into the weekend, we also wont have and moral sapping defeats to take into the weekend either.

there are no excuses for not not making top 4. we've spend money and we have no distractions.

Clubs are obliged usually as part of contracts and insurance to keep players fit, it's also a major factor when trying to sell players too that they're in match fit condition. Let's not forget aswell, they didn't just play for the sake of it, we had alot of injuries and other factors (like Copa America) to deal with too.

Our "title push" officially kicked off whilst still in the CL, back to back 4-1 wins over United/Real etc..

The tops teams manage their players well enough to challenge on all fronts. The Gooners, Scum and Chavs have good squad depth and are able to sustain their challenge.

It hardy helps us having fresh legs and not picking up points. I wonder if Kenny has actually settled on a starting XI? What we need to do is go on a long winning streak to instil self belief in the squad and crank up the pressure on our oppoenents.

It's fair to say that Kenny will have few excuses to hand if we fail to perform this season.

I dont underestimate it at all Skully.
Its one of the main reasons i think we will win the league this year.
1.Luis Suarez
2.No champions league
3.Kenny Dalglish
4.Lowered expectations
5.Just fucking coz.

So you think they didn't train at all during pre-season? So when Kenny said everyone worked hard getting fit during pre-season, he was lying? You've made that judgement based after one game? And it couldn't be Liverpool, having shown it for the past 2 decades with Ged bringing in psychologist as evidence, be a little mentally suspect when things go wrong?

Training and getting fit is one thing.
Playing games and getting the team to gel is another.

We should have worked more on the last bit IMO.

I hate to say it, but if it was never meant for Aquilani to play for us this season then why drag him all the way to China.

I agree with Neil, I don't think our pre season preparations were good enough, everyone will tell you there is no substitute for playing matches, you can tarin all day and it does not give you the same fitness levels.
I think too much of our pre-season was involved around PR, and when we had decent matches we played too many fringe players too often and not the core of the team. We did not play enough competitive matches full stop, and that showed on Saturday
I agree also that not having European Qualifiers has not helped either, they seemed to forget we usually have a few of them too.

The biggest issue with not being in Europe , other than the money is being able to attract top players, so I think we have done rather well to get a good squad together.

We'll see after the Arsenal game whether it's the players fitness or their mental resolve because judgement after 1 game is pre-mature, no?

My opinion is that Liverpool is still mentally fragile but with Kenny at the helm, it right itself pretty sharpish. So maybe we'll never know. 😉

As has already been mentioned, it will help players like Agger, Gerrard, Jhonson have a more consistent season.

Unfortunately it's not anywhere near enough of a help for Aurelio to benefit from this...
