No Ronaldo at the world cup would be marvelous. Maybe Platini and Blatter will get him on the Brazil team or something to help promote their show piece?

Torres looked sharp for the spanish.... dya know what would be good for us? buying Silva... cracking little player.

I didn't get to see Ireland beat Cyprus last night but having read a couple of match reports I am very confused as to how well we played. One report (BBC) said that we were pretty poor and were very fortunate to get a victory while the other one (Irish Times) seemed to say that we played pretty well, created plenty of goal scoring opportunities and deserved the win. ???

Did any one see the game and how did we do. I presume our centre midfield is still our main weakness?

We were pretty poor.

We did have a couple of chances but then so did they. Our two central midfielders were invisible for large parts of the game. After getting the goal we just sat back and let them come at us.

We got the win thanks to a good cross from the right by Duff, their two centre backs being asleep and their goalkeeper being absolutely shite - Leaving Keane with a header that he just needed to get on target for it to go in, which he did.

Thanks Ross. It sounds like another typical peformance from us then.
Trapp is one luck bugger. Long may it continue.

I got a text from someone (who posts on this site and like Brendan) about Keane saying " He has done fuck all other than wave his arms around like a spa tonight. "

My reply was "tonight ? that's all he's done for years"

That was about 4 minutes before he scored.

Even better was the gem that I mentioned when Duff couldn't get outside his man to get a cross in because he was playing on the right instead of left. "Trappatoni is using the genius idea of playing his wingers on the wrong side meaning they can't get a decent fucking cross in"

Literally as that sentence finished Duff cut back inside and crossed for Keane to score.

Ha ha, thanks mate!
I got a few texts from people saying 'I told you so!' but I still keep the same opinion of his performance last night, he was really, really shit.
And then what does Jim Beglin go and do? Name R. Keane as the Eircom Man Of The Match, baffling.

Really? I would have just put it down as Beglin being his usual knobhead self.

Maybe so.
Nothing will ever top the time he said that Cisse had been booked for being offside too many times.
We all waited for him to laugh or do something to indicate he was joking, he never did.

As usual, all pretty much spot on until we get to Keane.

Now, whilst agreeing 100% that he was at his most inuriating, annoying, whinging, flapping his arms and complaining like a cnut worst last night, even for you, that's a bit much about "all" that he had to do.

Had somebody other than him gotten to it, you'd applauding their predatory instincts and bravery.

Again, he pulls our fat out of the fire, having again done f#$! all for the majority of the match. Which pretty much sums up how decidedly average we are, and how, with THAT team, we'll play three games and come home next summer.

The influx of ridiculous money and top dollar foriegn imports into the English and Scottish leagues has killed the standard of the other "home" nations.

hahaha. That's exactly what happened every single time I made comment whilst I watched Danny Murphy in red. Every single time.

Right. So you're saying it's the Brits' fault that the Irish are shit at football?

Right. So you're saying it's the Brits' fault that the Irish are shit at football?

[/quote]

I'm saying that 15/20 years ago, before the English league was competing with the Italian and Spanish leagues for the world's best foreign players, we (Ireland) had several, if not most of their starting 11 playing, week in, week out at the very top clubs in England (Liverpool - Whelan, Beglin, Staunton, Houghton, Aldridge. Man U - Keane, Irwin, Moran, McGrath, etc...), as did Scotland, Wales and to a lesser extent, Norn Iron.

Now, take a look at any of the "local" nations not called England, and see how many of their strongest teams are in clubs of the same standard... Not a lot, mate. Our most important players are Fulham's goalie, Aston Villa's newest (and aging) center back and Spurs' forward.

Times have changed Bunny. And those changes have been detrimental to the fortunes of the smaller "home" nations at international level. 17 year old Whelans and Irwins and Mc Graths and Whitesides, etc... are not making it in England like they used to, largerly because of the influx of insane money, which led to attracting foriegn players (and coaches) in never before witnessed numbers, taking the spots that were previously available (to be faught for, at least) to home grown talent.

It's not about 'fault', Bunny. I'm not an England hater, nor is this a conspiracy theory. It's part of how the game has changed...

It just is. And I'm not wrong about it, mate.

BTW Hungary used to be brilliant at football too. Now they're shit. Why's that? You can't blame EVERYTHING on foreigners in the PL.
