Ings

What? Like as if
You may know something I don't but why do you find it unlikely?

I mean he wasn't Klopp's signing, he's been injured more or less since he got here and now out for the season apparently. Klopp is re-building and re-shaping, there will be 'casualties'. Ings' spot in the team are in jeopardy, or at least, it very well could be.

I think it's unlikely a young, quality, hardworking and quick striker will not be given every chance to prove his value to Klopp, who has never seen him play for him.

The idea that he would ship him out without offering him that chance seems utterly perverse and stupid

'Utterly perverse and stupid'.. you are being quite dramatic aren't you?

First of all, your in my opinion highly opinionated and flawed use of the word 'quality' kind of bugs me. He's played 5 games for us, 122 for Burnley, 27 for Bournemouth and handful for Dorchester and he's 23.

I am aware that posters on here rate him highly and I am also aware I have not quite seen enough of him to judge him properly, but his records so far, as a 23-year-old are not in any way proof that he's a ready made Liverpool-player.

He's not played much under a new manager, one that didn't buy him and now he's gone for another six month - he might linger on and get the chance in the new season but I don't think it's unheard of at all should he be deemed surplus to requirement during Summer - fair or not.

I would put pretty much everything I own (which admittedly is not a whole lot) on him being here next season. Selling him without seeing him first hand would be crazy. Let's assume we have some sort of European football next year, we could have a lot of games to play because I reckon Klopp will take the cups relatively seriously. I know we had a few weakened teams in the FA cup but we had about 900 injuries. Of our current attacking options Benteke could easily be gone, Origi is still young and won't play week in week out, Sturridge will spend at some of the season injured, Firmino can play a bit deeper than number 9. He'll get his chances and be eased back in after such a serious injury.

Ings will certainly get his chance when he returns. Klopp will have watched the games prior to his appointment.

He'll certainly get a chance. I don't know if he's got the quality to become a top class player but he certainly had already proved himself a more than a capable squad player for a club with high ambitions. I look forward to see him next year. He started the season very strongly and his attitude and work ethic are second to none. Good luck to him.

We'd look really stupid if we settled Burnley's compensation package over the Summer and then sold him. You might have a valid point about whether he's good enough for Klopp longterm, but for the immediate future, he's going nowhere. He'll get next season at least. Plus he's pretty versatile, so the striker numbers doesn't come into it so much, he can play wide, off the striker or as the striker..

Now that we have settled that Ings is staying, how do you see his role in our team?

I am personally of the opinion that we need at least one new striker/forward type, maybe even two.

Benteke looks odds on to head the other way, which leaves us with new face (maybe two), Sturridge, Firmino, Lallana, Coutinho, Ibe, Origi, Ojo and Ings for the creative/forward spots.

Will Ings demand a starting spot or is he seen as a squad player? Would he be okay with not playing week in week out?

Ings has had one season in the Premiership, at Burnley. He is in no position to demand anything, and nor does he seem that type. His place will be earned on merit.

As for strikers, it's very clear we need more goals

Is Ings equally apt on the wing/as wide forward or is he first and foremost a number 9?

I get the feeling Origi plays a big part in Klopp's plans and so do Sturridge (pending fitness) and Firmino obviously as well with Coutinho the creative outlet behind them or on the left (with Firmino in the 10-role).

My point is, as I completely agree with you, we need more goals, Klopp will be looking to add more fire-power to the team why the road to the starting XI for a player like Ings will be pretty long come next season.

I've only seen him play a few times, but he's quick and hardworking, so I would hope he is versatile enough to play in a few positions.

I think he would probably like to play as a striker, and centrally - that would seem to be his best position - but he's played slightly deeper for Burnley aswell. From what I can remember though, he seems to score most of his goals from close range, which would suggest he's happiest in and around the box.

@Pesam probably knows his game better than anyone here, having seen him loads in the flesh.

I'd be interested to hear how he thinks Ings might adapt to life under Klopp.

Sorry about the delay Doc, I was just catching up with Portly's exploits on the BBC iplayer.

At worst Ings is gonna be a very useful 3rd or 4th striker so for £7m or £8m it was a no-brainer when it came to signing him. He's a very hard working, fearless, natural goalscorer. The Burnley team he played in were very pragmatic, with very little width and a relatively pedestrian midfield which IMO makes his goal return for them even more impressive. I have a hunch he could score 20-25 per season for us given the help he'll get from Coutinho, Firmino etc but I am reluctant to say he'll be an outright success until I see him start a few games for us consecutively.

A thought; LFC were famous in the 70's and 80's for defending from the front; when we didn't have the ball our forwards would drop back and harry opposition midfielders and win the ball back (very unlike Benteke, Ballotelli, etc). If Klopp ever decided to start 2 up front, if those 2 were Ings and Origi I wouldn't think it would leave us light in midfield as they 2 look very tenacious, very fit and play for the team. As had been mentioned previously, Ings is most certainly a Klopp-type of player i.e. gegenpressing.

Obviously like most LFC fans I want Benteke and Balotelli sold and I am quite sure Sturridge will go too. I would love us to sign a top quality £40m striker and rotate him with Origi, Ings and Firmino and see who works best with who depending on the opposition. If we want 4 out-and-out strikers (i.e. Firmino is not one) then we either keep Studge or make a bid for Callum Wilson of Bournemouth.

Wow, "pressing" existed back then? I thought it was a modern thing when your strikers harried and chased defenders when they had the ball.

Ian Rush was ahead of his time!

Torres was fucking great at it. I seem to remember him robbing the ball off Vidic and also Pepe.

Yeah, I read some Bob Paisley book about the Liverpool squad and he was talking about Rush: (paraphrasing) "He sometimes looks as if he's not even watching the ball, but then he starts to jog, then run, then there's a red blur and the defender is wondering where the ball went!"

Kevin Keegan also never gave opposition defenders/midfielders time to settle on the ball. Keegan's performances were highlighted by his stunning performance in his last ever game for us against Borussia Moenchengladbach in the '77 EC final. The German captain Bertie Vogts was given the unenviable job of man-marking Keegan...........he failed. But Vogts was a huge part of BM's game when in possession; he would bring the ball out from the back like Beckenbauer did for the German national team before him and Mattias Sammer did after him. Many of Borussia's attacks in those days started with Vogts but Keegan never left him alone for a second and returned the compliment by man-marking Vogts which severely limited the amount of possession BM had in midfield.

I reckon gegenpressing was evident as far back as the Ajax/Holland teams of Rinus Michels and his "total football" revolution, those teams were all about keeping possession but if you lost it you HAD to win it back as soon as possible.

Sell Ings? Right.

Klopp would be better off selling the players he has seen rather than the players he hasn't.

Ings is problem # 3,953 to sort out Jurgen.

Carry on.
