I'm actually a bit more optimistic today. I think it all depends on whether West Ham can stay level with City at half-time or even better, for 60 minutes.
If they succeed in that, they can, ironically, get the City fans' help in finishing the job. The home fans will get nervy and fear that their team concedes a goal off a sucker punch. Misplaced City passes will be met with increasing groans or howls of disappointment and some bollocking as well. Every corner or free kick, however scarce, that West Ham earns, will turn the fans into nervous wrecks. The tension will be sky-high, and the fans will be busy chewing their finger nails or peering in-between their fingers instead of singing and cheering in support.
We've experienced that before at Anfield, even just during a regular league game when the stakes weren't so high. Take that, increase it a few fold.
And the nerves will get to some players, even if they've experienced a similar atmosphere and game 2 seasons before in a decider. It's hard to stop the adrenalin flow and doubt once they've started. You try to slow the game down, keep better possession, stretch the field of play - but screw a goal kick, miscontrol the ball with a heavy touch, or concede a needless foul and the nerves will start flowing back in again.
Fear that you could be labeled a choker the next day will start to creep in. Tempers will start to flare, fans will appear to turn on you, eyes will start to dart around but eye contact will start getting avoided as players start dodging blame for a poor pass or shoddy marking.
We just need West Ham to (at least) hold City for 45 to 60 minutes. And then, we'll see how it goes. If it's not to be, then it won' t happen for us. We can only hope.
Either way, we've had a brilliant season anyway. Brilliant... as fuck. 🙂
