Back to the oriinal post - Peter Beardsley was no. 7 not no. 10.

SOme other random memories -

I think Aldridge was signed mid season (around January) once Rush had announced he was leaving while Barnes & Beardsley came in the closed season

I also remember a letter in the Echo at the time from someone complaining we were replacing brilliance with mediocrity, and pointed to Aldridges goal scoring record at Oxford beign only acceptabel as he took all their penalties (the letter writer might have been called Brendan)

Also the Kop collapsed that closed season and we didnt play at home until mid September or something

Also I remember havign to arrive at the ground around 1pm to join a massive queue to guarantee gettgin into the Kop (for £2.20) by kick off

Also Houghton was signed around the same tiem as Barnes & Beardsley & I loved him, but Craig Johnson (is there a t in that) could leasp twice his own height to head the ball

I've always loved spiderneil, despite that whole 'spiderdiv' unpleasantness back in the day.

He's aces.

weren't the fans angry with barnes for a while because it looked like he would sign with arsenal in jan? so it on program where they were talking about barnes.

I'm being grumpy because I think it's an interesting topic talk about. I've wanted to discuss the the early 80's team (model of efficiency) to the late 80's free flowing liverpool for while.
Neil, i have been on this site for two minutes, but i already know that you like an attacking team more. Do we really need to expound on that further?

Some of what you have said is very obvious (2W + 1L > 1W + 2D) etc etc.....so you shouldn't really be surprised if people omit that and concentrate on the faux pas.
it's not easy to just become a (winning) attacking force though as we were pretty attacking under evans but were a soft touch.

Dont remember that, but I do remember he (or his agent) made a video of himself (& the brazil goal) and had it shopper around the top teams.

Also remember Watford coming to Anfield & their fans cheerign when Barnes put us 1-0 up & then taking the piss at the way the Kop pronounced "Barnes" in the Johnnie Barnes Johnnie Barnes Johnie Barnes chant

Also I think that season was when "Who's the scouser in the black?" from the away fans after a dodgy decision was greeted with the JB chant

barnes himself (on the video) says he was never going to arsenal he just didn't want to join midseason (which is fair enough).
I'll hunt down the video on youtube and post a link if I find it.

I don't think we have the players to play consistent attacking football at the moment. We can't stretch teams because we have no width and we're not quite clever enough in the middle of the park to pass our way through teams.

That was a problem under Rafa for large periods of time. We'd have a wealth of possession providing us with a platform to attack and we were just unable to take advantage of it.

He got a big controversial contract too. £6k a week.

Even with inflation, that's less than charles itandje.
was he the highest paid player in the team?

if it fair to say every single team that has won the league for a decade has had a quality winger in the side?

In 1992 when Barnes was at his peak, there was loads of speculation that he was going to go to an Italian team, and the European championships woudl eb the showcase he woudl use tosecure that transfer.

In a pre-tournament England warm up game I hoped he woudl get an injury that woudl keep him out of the tournament ... he did, he ruptured his achilles and was out for some 6 months. I have yet to get over the guilt I fell for that ...
I would assume so. The contract seemed to disgust many people (I don't remember, I read it in marcotti/vialli's book)
worth every penny and you could argue we've never replaced him, although macca was pretty darn good at his peak.

maybe that injury was the start of the many injuries barnes would have in his career. you're to blame 😉

Aldo was signed towards the end of the previous season just before Rushie said "Arrivederci". Houghton was signed after the 87/88 season had already started. They did both come from Oxford though.

I see it more a sign how fucking shit football is these days. If I didn't love Liverpool I wouldn't pay attention to anything to do with it.

Houghton signed a few months into the season I think.

I believe Barnes did try to get a move to other clubs but we were the only ones who made an offer at the time! I think he wanted to go abroad.

Exactly! It also more or less coincides with our fall from grace ... so the last 20 years are down to me too 🙁

Bale
Pastore
Bendtner
Ha! I love how you sneaked Bendtner's by the SCM censors admist all the Spidey fuss.

For me..

Expensive/Slightly less expensive.
Bale/Mata
Aguero/Suarez (or Gourcuff)
Pato/Fabiano

Mata
Kun
Douglas Costa

Higuain, Muller and Bale/Robben would be my three 'dream' signings though.
