Hull / Season post-mortem

Well it certainly would be nice with one of the really coveted young German talents for starters.

And yeah if Douglas Costa is on the move he'd be tailor made for us and probably well beyond our reach.

I believe Jacob Bruun Larsen from Dortmund would be an interesting bet seeing as he is as highly rated (more or less) within their setup (and at the same age, 18) as the phenomenon Pulisic. The fact that he is blistering fast and equally good with both feet makes him quite an utility player in attack. Big and strong too. He might already be unavailable but as he has only just started playing for the first team he'd got less suitors than his teammate Pulisic as of now. There were talks of the young American Pulisic as well but he will be extremely expensive won't he?

Anyways, we just need to buy some REAL talent, as in potential world class players.

*When it comes to potential world class central defenders we might want to look at the Serie A knowing their record of unearthing quality in that area. Any names there?

There is a great young prospect playing for Las Palmas, Mauricio Lemos (21).
Urguayan lad who turned down Barca as he felt it was the wrong move at such a young age when he needs games to develop.
Loads of clubs are interested. He's only 6'1 though, might be an issue in the PL.

As for Italy. Rugani is one. Doubt Juventus will sell him mind.

Yeah I just don't think we stand a chance buying top talents from the top clubs - unless they haven't really got any games yet. And then the scouting becomes a bit more difficult I guess.

I am all for an Uruguayan lad.

Douglas Costa is not beyond our reach if we make the CL. We've got 3 Brazilians here and we can use that, as well a World Class manager who he'll know from the German League. He'd be the ideal signing for us out wide.

Hope you are right, doubt it though, especially as I can see his price skyrocket. As in +£60M.

Thats just the downside of pressing high with 5 or 6 players isn't it ?

You'll always leave the defence exposed.

So either we need defenders who can survive in those or a change of approach.

Or sit a top quality DM right in front of the defence and tell him not to fucking move.

If its possible to get Brandt I think we should do that instead, because of the fee Douglas Costa would command.
I can see us having a shot at getting him though with our Brazilian players and Klopp.

So a DM version of Jan Mølby?

Not sure that would work either..

It didn't when we played big Jan there in the latter stages of his time with us. He's a very different player to Emre Can but at times we misused him in the same way, namely expecting him to play deep in a partly defensive role.

honestly would mascherano even work in this system at the moment?

I'm sure if you looked at our average formation in possession we've got 3 players goal side of the ball most of the time, the center halves and Henderson. The number rather than the abilities are whats getting us caught out.

For once I'm not sure I agree with you. Mascher in his prime would be such a humungous upgrade on anyone in our current squad as a DM that he'd make an equally humungous difference to our overall play, though more consistent CBs wouldn't hurt either. IMO of course.

That's fair enough, maybe he would prevent most of these breakaway goals. The counter side to that is his distribution, I think it'd cause a lot of frustration.

Many of those problems might stem from playing for so long without any sort of DM, largely because of neurotically retarded people like Rodgers who think the ability to tackle and the ability to pass represents a mutually exclusive trade-off.

Our keepers passing the ball out like mongs. That's easily attributed to a bad habit picked up from having no defensive midfielder. Our defenders petrified at the thought of being raped by lower-division players, again easily attributed to the lack of a defensive midfielder. The strikers being predictable and easy to negate, which could be attributed to the lack of defensive cover leading to hopeless balls being lofted into the box. These are deep-rooted psychological problems that have gradually infected the entire squad thanks to our inability to fill a gaping hole in the midfield, and they won't suddenly disappear if Klopp goes out and buys mascherano. The long-term damage has probably been done already.

Markeh: possibly, but I never thought it was that bad TBH, and having Mascher back there taking care of business would release some of the more creative players to be more available to start attacking moves. Either way, IMO we need at least one decent Mascher-type player in the squad, but I'm not sure Klopp sees it that way.

Klopp needs to come up with an alternative to his pressing style. Because when it's not working or the other team are ready for it, then he's got nothing except relying upon our players to revert back to their instinctive game. And the poor fool ought to now realise that such a strategy is going to cost him his job, our players are cunts, you need to force them to play like non-cunts, and you need at least one alternative in case of emergency. It's a continual battle to prevent them reverting to cunt. He needs to get this concept into his head, then work from there.

Pressing only only seems to work when the other team are willing to attempt to play positive football. It becomes completely redundant when the opposition are prepared for us to have 75 percent possession. The high press is a significant component of our attacking strategy as it allows us to attack a disorganised defence. As you say we need a alternative however Klopp has yet to find it. The real worry is where we actually have alternative options in the squad. Personally I don't think we do.

I doubt that its Klopps only approach. High pressing and gegenpressing are part of what he wants us to do, but obviously not everything.

I feel the same after saturday.

If you guys struggling to give a shit when we are 1 point behind top four and are lining up the three teams ahead of us in a row then good riddance.... we are moving towards a fantastic fun few weeks;-)

'Lining up the three teams ahead of us', after we've just lost 2-0 to Hull, 3-2 to Swansea and had the worst start to a football year for over 50 years, dropping from 2nd to 5th, getting knocked out of both Cups and with no league wins since December

And you still find it hard to understand the slightly downbeat mood amongst the supporters

Wow

2016 was a good Year for us. Two finals lots of goals and memorable wins. We still play season by season so who the Fuck cares if January is a poor month instead of october? We dropped a few places but there is plenty to play for....

2016 was shite. We won nothing, lost two finals and finished 8th

We can't win anything this season and we are 5th

Great

It's not as if we've been swamped by numbers during counterattacks. Often it's just two players (at Hull it was one player who broke through for the second goal) who cause havoc simply by running towards our goal..

How the fuck was 2016 a good year?

2016 we outscored everyone, qualified for finals and played wonderful football. The point is it counts for nothing how a fucking Year is. What does it mattered if this is the worst opening to a Year ever? We dont play Year by Year but season by season. This season is far from over. It would mean Jack shit if we lost all games in october instead of January if they are in the same season.

I doubt that its Klopps only approach. High pressing and gegenpressing are part of what he wants us to do, but obviously not everything.
Combined with quick small passes in attacking areas.

What else has he got?

Doesn't look all that obvious where I'm looking.

Exactly nobody defending likes being run at with space behind them and it's not like Henderson is slow either. He has decent pace, can tackle and great endurance. Yes there are better defensive midfielders but apart from being a bit more positionally aware I don't see the massive improvement that could be made.

I actually don't like Henderson in this position, he's not a natural but I think he has done a decent job and is definitely way back in the list of reasons for this current slump.
