Hmmmm..
I don't think you can say the Huddersfield game was categorically different in approach, it was more the fact that we got a goal early (and a bit of luck). You're not telling me that the game would have gone the same as it did against Swansea, had an early pop at goal from range took a deflection and gone in? It would have opened them up, given us confidence and we'd have probably gone on to win. As it was we ended up frustrated against Swansea, because we couldn't break them down.
The early goal against Huddersfield got our confidence back up and they didn't know what to do. It's like they were resigned to defeat and intent on damage limitation. A goalkeeping error with some absolute genius from Bobby, and a penalty later and the goals probably then reflected our possession domination and the few clear cut chances we created (mostly for Mane). But these are exactly the games we should be winning, and often don't, so no one can have any complaints or really take anything away from the win, we did a professional job.
As for a few player observations:
Gomez - got the plaudits for that great block, but he also had that moment where he (once again) got caught under the ball and allowed their player acres to then run into. It could have cost us again and it's something he needs to cut out his game. Some of his passing was hit and miss too when under no pressure.
Karius - Looked more assured, made a save (yay!) and sweeped well. He also had a gaff where he lost the ball under him, and between confusion from him and Lovren, managed to kick the ball out of play under no pressure, something that's happened a few times with him between the sticks. Overall though, much improved, though admittedly he didn't have loads to deal with.
Henderson - there were things I liked about him yesterday and things that frustrated me. He looked fired up, bollocked a few people (notably Matip and Gomez, for playing stray balls and/or not using him as an outlet), interchanged and overlapped with Can a few times on the right wing and put in the typical good deliveries of old (though Can's were even better for Mane), and he generally did the "ticking over" job in midfield, recycling the ball and doing all the things that usually go unnoticed (see Gini). On the negative note there were times I wanted him to turn with the ball rather than looking to immediately lay it off. I sometimes feel this is instruction, because of two reasons - Klopp clearly likes at least one of his midfielders to fulfill this role, the water carrier (see Lucas, Gini), and because he previously did carry the ball forward and look for a positive pass. Now he's all about maintaining momentum and possession in the midfield, to keep the flow going. Milner by comparison was looking beyond the nearest man and spraying the ball to the 2nd or 3rd man, ie looking beyond Henderson or Can, for say, Gomez, Robinson or Salah. Always looking to speed up the play and cut out the middle man, as it were. Henderson did move forward when the other midfielders had possession and probably supported he attack more than we've seen him do in a long time. I hope this was instruction too, because when you get him in the mix, his interplay around the box can be good and he was once a threat when up there too.
Mane - he's (for want of a better cliche) "trying too hard" isn't he? His movement off the ball is still good and I felt he improved as the game went on, but he's making mistakes too in defensive areas from trying to compensate a bit in attempting to win the ball back. He just needs to concentrate on supporting Salah and Firmino and the goals will come. He seems to be looking a bit like Sturridge looked after his first big injury with us, which I hope isn't an ominous sign. I'd rather hope for the form is temporary scenario.
Can - I'm loathed to really examine him as I feel he's definitely gone in the Summer, and he's typically brilliant one game and shit for the next five, but yesterday was the sort of performance where he looks energised and interested, it's a shame he can't do that more regularly and there might be more of an uproar about his potential move.
