Was the team that finished second season before last?
Reina, Hyppia, Alonso, Mascherano, Carragher, Kuyt, Torres, Gerrard...
Was it the best team we've had in the premiership?
I guess ultimately it wasnt good enough, but United did have to win about 10 on the spin to pip us to the post.
Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Torres. That was something else that season.

Good team of course but I do have a soft spot for the team we had in the treble season.

Amen brosephine.

All we needed was some quality outwide and a slightly more sane manager and we'd have had the title.

Agreed. My two favourite vintages of recent Liverpool sides. Not a huge surprise, as they were the two best also.
Obviously i love that side. They made history (which is dismissed too readily on here in my opine) but they never really threatened the league. We needed a result against Charlton to make top 4.
And in a head to head one off match i think Rafa's league team would hump Ged's.
Be a fucking shit game tho.

We've been saying that for about 15 years now.

But still there were many people who thought that a central midfield of Alonso and Mascherano isn't good enough.

I bet spider-neil did. According to him Alonso carried Masher. He'd have had two Alonsos in there if he could.

really good team that was, and should have won the league ... but a few poor results against shit teams AND fucking Macheda killed us.

it was top 3 qualified for CL back then, i think we just sneaked it over leeds with 69 points. that season our league form was split in 2: disappointing until about march, when we lost 2-1 at anfield against CL rivals leeds, and then a truly brilliant, nerve-shredding, sequence of wins from then on to cling onto 3rd. i remember being sick with nerves every time we played, i was that desperate for CL football, especially after we threw it away the previous season.

who can forget the 3-2 at goodison? then there were gritty wins at coventry and bradford...i think we won about 8 in a row altogether. it was a great effort of mental strength; i never really loved houllier as our manager, but that team sure was tough.

I've always maintained that had we kept Robbie Keane, we'd have won the title. We were top when he left us weren't we?

Granted it wasn't all down to him but he got a double against Bolton on boxing day and then Rafa dropped him for the next game.
He was also left on the bench when we were crying out for a winner when we drew 1-1 at Wigan.
Could have done with him at Boro and the draw with City at home too.

Still, that team was class like, seems like a decade ago now though...

Can't be arsed to browse through all of threads but I'm fairly sure there were a few who did.

Mascher's not worth the money etc.

The Treble team had the better strength in depth, no doubt, but the first XI, I'd go for the 08/09 side.
That Coventry away game was my first ever Liverpool away trip. We won 2-0 and Gary Mac didnt celebrate. It was awesome.

it was a great run. i've looked it up: it was 6 wins and a draw from the last 7 games, every single one under pressure. to put it into perspective, before the run we had 50 points from 31 games, an average of 1.6 points per game, or 61 points over a season: as bad as last year, basically.

Not to mention Thursday night games every week against top European oppo.
A lot of people credit Rafa with putting us amongst the elite of Europe again, which is fair of course with the wonderful champions league win, but i think that Uefa cup run was remarkable and shouldnt be undersold. Perhaps it is almost ignored because of the opposition in the final, but we beat Barcelona, Roma, Porto and Olympiakos on the road to Dortmund.
That in any language is a tough fucking run and add to that the NEED to maintain focus on the league and compete in TWO domestic trophies.

FUCKING REMARKABLE it was.

You and Ross should get along better, you know ;D
yeah, in bizarro world.

it was definitely a tough run in europe, but we did get a bit lucky drawing tranmere and then wycombe in the FA cup, and houllier really had spent big-time to get us a really deep squad. still, a great achievement, no doubt.
