How come Catholics support Palestine and Protestants support Israel?

I can kind of see the left v right dichotomy thing but have some of these cultural alignments been pulled out of a tombola?

On team A we have Catholicism, Palestine, Celtic, St Pauli and Labour

On team B we have Protestantism, Israel, Rangers, FC Hamburg and the Tories.
