Hodgson: Its a tough job - even Mourinho said Liverpool will get worse and worse

Spurs should derive hope from Gareth Bale versus Glen Johnson and Aaron Lennon against Paul Konchesky. So electric have been Fernando Torres’ times in sprint training that the Liverpool striker will aim to dart in behind Younes Kaboul.

The managerial match-up, Harry Redknapp versus Roy Hodgson, also offers intrigue. Friends for life, foes for a day.

After 90 minutes in north London, east London will entertain south London over a good bottle of red. Redknapp and Hodgson are old allies, speaking on the phone, dropping each other notes of congratulations after significant events, always offering support.

“You have colleagues and acquaintances but me and Harry are a bit beyond that stage,†says Hodgson.

Not only do they share a passion for the game, they are both rare creatures in the elite jungle. An English presence at the helm of two such famous clubs was one of the main topics of dinner-table conversation at the League Managers Association’s Park Lane love-in with Jose Mourinho last week.

With the Football Association finally locating the cash to breathe life into the National Football Centre, the drive to develop more Redknapps and Hodgsons accelerates.

Harry Hotspur is certainly flying the flag, making Spurs one of the box-office attractions of Europe, let alone England. Bale, Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart have elegantly built victories but the architect is Redknapp.

He creates the right tactical framework, a bold one in its wing-borne openness. Caution is for wimps.

Liverpool fans would love to see Hodgson acquiring some of Redknapp’s sense of adventure.
The call for Liverpool to start with two strikers has turned into a clamour on the Kop.

Yet Hodgson is experienced enough to know what he’s doing in finding the best support for Torres.

Dirk Kuyt’s return from injury has helped on the right while David Ngog offers the option of 4-4-2. But the recruitment of another striker remains of paramount importance. Liverpool’s new board convenes on Wednesday and transfer targets are sure to be discussed.

This game should highlight the disparity in squads. Redknapp has strength in depth shown by Michael Dawson’s return to training and Jermain Defoe’s return to fitness.

Jermaine Jenas out, Wilson Palacios in: international replaces international. A glance at the respective benches will remind people of the substantial reconstruction job Hodgson has taken on. He must, though, buy players good enough for Liverpool, not good enough for Fulham.

The old mantra about managers requiring time to impose their personality and footballing philosophy on a club was understandably alluded to by Hodgson.

“We’ve been working together for four months and with respect to Harry, he’s had two and a half years at Tottenham,†said the Liverpool manager.

“Everyone I know in football respects the job I’m doing here and aren’t too surprised it hasn’t been an easy start. In fact, 95 per cent would have predicted it as [Jose] Mourinho did. ‘Liverpool will get worse and worse’ is what he said and if the great man Mourinho says it, I don’t know why you don’t quote him!â€

The problem with mentioning the Special One is that he enjoys a regal reputation as the alchemist supreme, famed for making an instant impact on Chelsea, Inter Milan and now Real Madrid. He was clearly working with richer resources, though.

A good manager, Hodgson just needs to be more positive in word and strategy. Certain results, like the defeat of Chelsea, show his ability.

“The problem with this game is one minute you are God’s gift to football and when you lose a couple of games the next minute you don’t know what you are doing,†reflected Redknapp.

“Roy had a bad couple of results and suddenly people are jumping all over him. Now he is coming back. Once he gets his team sorted out like he wants it, Liverpool will come back as a real force.â€

English football should want English managers to succeed. Redknapp and Hodgson will certainly be perceived in competition when Fabio Capello leaves after Euro 2012.

“With the public opinion seeming to favour that an England team should have an English manager, it would surprise me if it wasn’t an Englishman who got the job,†said Hodgson.

“Harry will be a major candidate and it doesn’t surprise me that he’s said he wants it because it’s the pinnacle of everyone’s ambition. He’s got the attibutes to do the job.†Confirmation of Redknapp’s gifts will hardly be welcomed by one old friend. Let the duel begin.

As Bunny says, Roy says so little considering he says so much. I can't fucking stand the guy and I've no real idea why. Results and shitty performances aside I've no rationale as to why I hold such a high level of dislike for the man. I think it's because he constantly pipes out such shite from his mouth. It's weird though as I've never felt this way about any previous LFC manager. Certainly so new into their career as well.

can't speak for you obviously, but i think my biggest problem is he just seems like an impostor at the club. as soon as i saw him being announced as the new manager - seeing pictures of him getting out of his car at melwood etc - something in me just clicked, and i just knew something wasn't right: this is not a liverpool manager.

I agree with every word Sunny. My stomach ties itself in a know when I see there is a new interview from him.

I dislike him with a passion.

I hate how he talks down the club. It pisses me right off.

He just demonstrates no ambition or expectation. I can understand why he does it - if he lowers everyone's expectations then any kind of success is a bonus.

However, whilst that might work at Fulham or other mid-table team, its not appropriate for Liverpool. We came 2nd in the league the season before last and regularly reached the latter stages of the Champions League.

Last season was shite, but we arent a milion miles from the team we had the season before last, and he needs to remember that.

I hope Mourinho comes out and says Roy Hodgson is not good enough to manage Liverpool. Then, i'm sure Roy will need no more convincing and will just tender his resignation.

This is the 4th time I've logged into Liverpool.no and there is a new story from Roy. The latest piece is about stopping Bale today and how he plan to do that. But he also manages, yet again, to spout of on how good Spurs are and that they are title contenders etc etc.

All I've heard from his comments these last days is how good Spurs are and that winning away is difficult.
Our players must really believe they can win today..

I'd laugh my tits off if Jose did that

I don't think Mourinho actually said what Hodgson's claiming he said, did he? I remember him saying that we'd got worse and worse each season under Rafa (which is bollocks, but whatever), but not that we 'will get worse and worse'. Unless he meant because we were managed by Hodgson.

I wish Hodgson would shut the fuck up and get on with his job for however much longer he has left.

He was brought in to do a simple job; fix the weaknesses and utilise whatever players we had as best as possible.

He's failed gloriously at both; and he should stop acting as if he's some Messianic figure who's been let down by the great unwashed who should know better.

Thing is, I reckon he knows he's failing and is desperately trying to cover his tracks. Since he isn't going to stop failing in a job which is patently beyond him, he's unfortunately not going to shut up either.

I could quite easily believe that Mourinho said that Liverpool would get worse and worse ie. after seeing Roy appointed!

Yeah, it was kinda a shot at Benitez but Mourinho included Hodgson in his comment. Guess that's why Roy thought he'll borrow it for himself.

Mourinho said: “It is very difficult work for Roy to do it with Liverpool as, over the last years, they have been getting worse, worse and worse.

“The Liverpool of 2004 was better than the Liverpool of 2005, 2005 was better than 2006 and 2006 better than 2007. And they arrive at a situation now where, but for Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Pepe Reina, Fernando Torres, if his head is there, it is very difficult for Roy to make Liverpool champions.

“He needs time and it’s not easy because I don’t think they went in the right direction.â€

Talking down the club is right. I thought "Roy's a nice guy, I just don't want him manager". Now, I just want us rid of this man. I rarely talk like a teenager, but this man is a complete and utter loser. I say this because he's defeatist, negative, underconfident, and frankly not good enough...

And Mourinho is correct. We made so many bad decisions during the Benitez era that we're really fucked for a good while.

The problem with Hodgson ist his mouth, unfortunately..though it doesnt help.

The problem is his lack of ability.

I hated Budgie from the start. I never liked him or rated him before he became Liverpool manager, and I was delighted when he lost the Europa Cup final.

It's embarrassing and disgraceful that this old twat is our manager. He knows we know, and doesn't like us for it. The least popular and worst manager we've ever had. We hate him, he hates us. Fuck off Budgie.

Yeah we were really worse in 2007 than 2006 when we reached the CL Final. And we were definitely worse in 2009, than 2008 when we came second. Maureen is wrong, and anyone that buys into it, needs to take a course in logic. I'm surprised at you Ross.

God, Roy is a disgrace. It's bad enough he's out of his depth on the field, but running us down off the field as well?

No threat to the rainforest there then. Thats ONE note from Roy to Harry to say well done for the FA cup win and thats it.

No trophy winning motherfucker.

This.

I think the reason Hodgson is making these ill-advised comments, is that he is totally bemused to be treated as the culprit, while the architect of all our misfortunes is sitting in Milan.

Ironically, it seems to me that the worst thing that ever happened to our club was winning the CL in 2005, because the kudos of that gave Benitez 5 years to fuck up the club unchallenged, particularly after Paco left when he became noticeably more irrational.

Yeah 2 European Cup Finals and an FA Cup Final and a League Cup Final, our highest points total in 20 years and finishing above Arsenal most of the time he was here.

What a fucking waster.

I know - he brings us some of our best nights and days as a Liverpool Fan, and the revisionists are straight in with comments such as these. No logic to this treatment of Rafa. And these fans love Maureen as well. Where is their loyalty? Do they love Fergie as well?

I'm a bit of a traditionalist. The way I was brought up as a Liverpool supporter, you are loyal to the manager of Liverpool Football Club.

Not the manager of Inter Milan.

Says the Liverpool supporter who wanted the Liverpool manager sacked before he'd even taken charge of a game.

Good god. How does he keep doing it... and when will it end?

I can't wait for him to get the boot.
