Roy Hodgson claims Liverpool's form is as good as anybody's

Roy Hodgson insists he has "no fears" over his future as Liverpool manager, and he challenged any potential replacement to do a better job than he has since taking the Anfield reins.

Hodgson is preparing the Reds for a Europa League home clash with Utrecht, admitting the competition has "saved" the club from heightened criticism. Liverpool have won six of 17 league games this season, only triumphing once on the road, and they crashed out of the Carling Cup at home to Northampton. However, in Europe they have already secured progression to the next round with a game to spare.

Chairman Tom Werner labelled the club's results "unacceptable" during a Liverpool phone-in on Monday, but he did give his backing to Hodgson. And the Liverpool manager is adamant he has no reason to fear for his job following the sacking of Sam Allardyce by Blackburn's new owners.

"I don't have any fears or concerns," said Hodgson. "The owners have made it very clear. They said that they are in it for the long-term and want to be patient. They realise it will take time and that we can't turn things around overnight, and they also realise the team I'm working with is not the team I put together.

"So I have no concerns at all.

"But if you then say, 'so you feel there is no chance of you getting sacked', I would be in the minority of one in that respect. It happens to you [the reporters], it happens to Allardyce, I suppose we're all in that situation.

"As a professional, who thinks he knows his job, then you'll excuse me for not wishing to go down the route that you and other people want to go down, which is 'who can we get rid of next?'"

Elaborating on Liverpool's progress under his guidance, Hodgson defended his recent run of results, despite picking up seven points from a possible 18 in his last six Premier League matches. The Reds have beaten West Ham and Aston Villa, but lost to Newcastle, Tottenham and Stoke, in addition to dropping two points at Wigan.

"The only team with better results than us over the past five or six games is Arsenal or Manchester United. If you take the last five or six games we are right up there in terms of results," he stated, despite Liverpool being behind the likes of West Brom, Blackburn, Blackpool, Sunderland, Stoke and Bolton in the Premier League form table.

"I don't think the results over 17 games have been that good. We've been saved a bit by our European matches. We've done very well there. I've been satisfied with that because we've not always used our so-called best team. I'm expecting the next few games to go better. I'm expecting to see the team climb the table.

"Basically speaking, unless there is a major inflow of cash into the club, unless the team is suddenly going to be changed from one moment to the next, whoever takes my place will be doing a similar job. I don't believe there's a magic wand, we're working well as a staff and as a club, and together we'll put it right, and with the owners' help we'll get it 100 percent right because we'd improve the team as well."

What a fucking useless twat of a media-facing manager he is; The one thing I expected him to be good at and he's even shitter than anyone else in the league.

He's an embarassment to the club and himself.

Make it stop. Someone just make it stop.

I think I'd almost take someone worse than him (if that's possible) just so I didn't have to suffer through these maddening interviews.

He really is *the* worst manager in our history.

"We've been saved a bit by our European matches. We've done very well there."

That bit is worrying. We've looked pretty horrible in almost every european game we've played and we've been playing some poor sides ffs.

Ya, we have also had one of the easiest run of fixtures in the last five or six games.

I'm counting the number of days before we get rid of this self pitying idiot.

Read the first highlighted bit right before that (this bit) Hodgson defended his recent run of results, despite picking up seven points from a possible 18 in his last six Premier League matches He thinks 7 from 18 is a good return!

TWLMIH needs to be booed tonight and given plenty of 'Hodgson Out' chants

We need to make the dismal old cunt's position untenable.

I don't think it'll happen though, because we don't tend to boo our own players or manager (and this is a good, admirable quality)

Plus we'll batter Utrecht anyway, and Torres will fill his boots

Just Sing for Kenny all night, I'm sure the owners will get the gist.

No need to boo manager or players.

Anyway with half the ground full of free tickets teenagers (under 17's) they will probably give him hell

We could photo-shop him touching children.

Or push him down the stairs.

Roy has no fears..... except a fear of playing attacking football.

Maybe winning away from home causes an allergic reaction.... brings him out in a rash or makes him bloat up?

Dortmund have won all their 8 away games in Bundesliga so far. Impressive.

i would like to see someone make a reality show about him, following him around in the day to see exactly what the fuck he is doing

all this bullshit about working with the team, and working hard, putting things right would quickly be seen to be a pile of pathetic delusional soundbites. the old man's a fucking clown and a loser

The last couple of the days there has been a bit more negativity written about him in the press, maybe the tide is turning..

Tony Cascarino has lambasted Roy Hodgson’s managerial reign at Anfield, suggesting the under-fire Liverpool boss is failing the club’s rich footballing traditions.

The former Republic of Ireland international claims the results under the ex-Fulham manager have not been good enough, but even more alarmingly for the club’s fans, are the manner in which these poor results have been achieved.

Citing the drab 0-0 draw against Utrecht on Wednesday night, the much maligned football pundit believes Hodgson’s tactics are far too similar to those he implemented at Craven Cottage, and criticises him for turning the footballing institution that is Liverpool into a “bigger-budget Fulhamâ€.

Cascarino told the Times: “Any Liverpool manager has a duty to play with a certain style: fluent, attractive, attacking, passing football.

“Roy Hodgson is not only failing with the results, he's failing in his duty to the club's traditions and to the fans, and that's a pretty serious combination. If you haven't got style, you at least need results.

“The goalless draw against Utrecht in the Europa League on Wednesday confirmed that Hodgson's cautious tactics and conservative attitude have permeated the whole squad: because he picked a second-string team and the football was as unambitious and unexciting as it is when the first XI take to the field.

He continued: “Nine away games, one win and six losses is dreadful. That's relegation form, and even if you could argue that Liverpool no longer have a squad good enough for the top four, they ought to be challenging for the top six.

“It's not a new problem for Hodgson. With Fulham his record was: 2008-09, three away league wins; 2009-10, one away league win. It has to be the manager's tactics.

“Hodgson has quickly turned Liverpool into a bigger-budget Fulham: they go out, away from home, not to lose. They should be going out to win.

“Imagine Manchester United or Arsenal playing such dull football, given their reputation and past success.

“It wouldn't be tolerated. Nor should it be at Anfield even if the club isn't the force it once was.

“That's no excuse for failing to entertain and failing to act like the big team Liverpool still are.

He added: “Hodgson remains inflexible, conservative, old-fashioned.â€

Random question, but not worth starting another thread...

Has he always been this much of a shit cunt in interviews/media and what not?

I always thought he was a limited manager but polite and a gentleman. It seems I was wrong about the latter, but if I was paying attention would I have noticed his shiteness when dealing with the media earlier?

I remember some Fulham fans being pissed that he didn't say goodbye or at least write an open letter of thanks or anything.

Cascarino is chatting shit, though.

Houllier or Benitez didn't play great football and we didn't care, because they got results.

I dont think he ever had to face this level of media scrutiny before. I remember a quote where he expressed surprise on how often LFC were on TV or something to that effect.

In the past Roy's got himself a name in both Italy and Denmark that I know of for being bad-tempered under pressure.

Cascarino's a prize cnut in his own right - shit footballer, shit pundit and fond of putting the boot into LFC. That said, he's not wrong here. Even a broken watch tells the right time twice a day.

Relax people. Thirteen year or so after Souness ruined this club we were pretty good. So in 2023 we might come good again 😉
