I think we'll have a better season this time.
We have a much stronger squad. Some good additions in some positions that needed strengthening.
We also looked better in the second half - more organized and pressed better.
Hopefully Firmino and Benteke will give us some more creativity and firepower.

We're lulling other sides that might be watching into a full sense of security then....

BAM...the Quadruple here we come.

We've only played against shit teams all pre season so it's hard to judge if we've progressed since last season but it doesn't look much different to me. Too much passing to little effect and teams have far too much time to get into position once we win the ball back.

Yeah, why is it we're playing shit teams? Don't we normally play in some preseason tournament where we play some meaningful matches?

I know that some of the games were arranged before the end of last season but i don't know if all of them were. Maybe they wanted an easy ride in pre season so there wasn't any added pressure before a meaningful ball is kicked. I don't think that any of the teams we have played has been similar to what we'll expect at Stoke but i'm not sure how you would replicate that anyway. Still make me rather anxious that we'll start the season somewhat undercooked which is strange considering the start to the season we have.

I thought that was a smart move to play these. A good result. Sure the quality of them wasn't the best but at least they were a team in peak condition. We won and confidence will be gained from it. A win win. Gomez looks the real deal and Ibe is a better player than Sterling (or at least very close). Milner slots in effortlessly. Coutinho was good but lacking his real sharpness (still scored though)

Bring on..... Erm..... Swindon!

For me, Ibe was equal parts delightful and frustrating - a feeling I expect to be rather familiar with for this season. His pace, strength, balance, ambition and ability to play both inside and outside is great, but as is to be expected from a youngster, his reading of the momentum, decision-making and quality of his final delivery is still inconsistent or mediocre. I thought he slowed down our attacks a bit too often in this game because he kept waiting for opponents to complete doubling on him before making a move, or overplayed and dribbled into a cul de sac in the middle instead of making an extra early pass or taking a shot.

Certainly can only get better and even more exhilarating to watch as he learns and irons out the kinks in his game over the next couple of seasons.

Spot on.

Those people claiming he's even close to equalling sterling are deluded.

He has some great raw attributes but his decision making & timing are nowhere near good enough.

In his favour he does have that impossible to define factor that makes you believe he can make something happen when he gets the ball, & that combined with his strength should mean he does have an impact for us, but I don't think he'll have the same breakthrough season sterling had.

His decision making wasn't good enough all the time, but it was better than Ibe's, & his timing & reading of the game (arguably the same thing) was much better imo.

I think that's right but, given the way Sterling behaved towards the end of his time with us, I wouldn't be that surprised if Ibe, who looks so far to be a fair bit steadier and more mature, ends up having the better career.

Oh his behaviour off the pitch & attitude has been markedly better, which does point to a more stable & productive relationship, but in terms of impact this season I think a lot of people need to reassess their expectations.

The amount of people I hear talking about Ibe like he's already at the level Sterling was worries me. He shouldn't be judged against him constantly & certainly shouldn't be found wanting if he doesnt have the same impact.

I was at Anfield in December 2013 and watched the Norwich and West Ham home games.
Sterling was far from being impressive in those games, and I actually thought he was far from being the end product.
Then came our run in that mad Jan-May period when Suarez carried us to new heights and Sterling contributed his part, having benefited from playing in that high flying team.
Last season he was our main (and at times our only) threat up front, but for me he was disappointing for large parts of the 2nd half of the season. I still don't think he's the end product.
Judging by what Ibe has shown since coming back from his loan spell, I believe he's now at a better position (as a player) than Sterling was 1.5 years ago. Hoping that he has a better character than Sterling, I can see him equalling Sterling pretty soon.

You may well be right.

I just worry that if he takes longer to develop than sterling did that people will begin to lose patience & write him off.

That would be very short sighted & unfair. Adding or refining that element can take time & only game time can help it develop.

Then we're on the same boat.

I never really understand why people think naming a couple of the things Sterling is better at than Ibe not only means that makes him better on balance than Ibe, but so totally superior as to make comparisons futile. It just doesn't follow.

I don't draw the opposite conclusion about Ibe because he's way stronger, more balanced than Sterling, and has a much more powerful strike.

My honest opinion is at the same stages of their senior careers, Ibe looks the more dangerous and effective player, albeit not as polished or elegant as Sterling. I don't see much between them, really.

If we've learned anything from the way we've overused young players in the past it's the Raheem is currently at his peak, he's going to get a hamstring injury in the next six months and then he'll be fucked and playing for Grimsby to pay his tax bills within 5 years.

Is that a realistic assessment or just wishful thinking?
