Been awhile since I did the hero zero thing but I'm curious what people make of Henchoz. Personally I always liked him but I know he was prone to a few mistakes. Handballs in FA cup finals aside of course 😉 He was Sami's hombre for many a game and that might have put him in a better light than he deserved.

Thoughts appreciated. 🙂

He certainly wasn't phenomenal or a hero but wasn't bad either. On his day he could be a beast but as you point out, having someone as commanding as Sami alongside you is only going to help

These hero and zero things are just fucking bizarre.

How could any LFC supporter ever think Stephane Henchoz was a 'zero'?

He was a super defender for us.

Right fuck it - I won't bother any more then if they are so 'bizarre'.

Let's all talk about how great Lallana is and whether he is worth the money. Thrilling.

Threads like this should exist

There's lots of actual heroes people hate for us, I see nothing wrong with threads asking about more cultish ones

Ok it is clear he is a hero. But from memory it wasn't always the case which is why I put his name out there in the first place. There was a game early on in his LFC career where he found himself in the RB slot defending. He screwed it up so badly that he lost the ball and they scored. It was entirely his fault and I'm sure Ged went ballistic. Since that game he became a much more dependable and solid player. Kicking the ball up the field instead of attempting to play it out. As much as I loved the guy I couldn't imaging him playing in our current system.

Didn't think that much of him before he joined us, but I'd been fooled by the fact that he'd been playing in a nowhere team, as he was mostly steady as a rock for us. Had one iffy spell when Babbel joined and GH wanted to play Babbel in the centre alongside Sami, so Henchoz was shunted out to RB and looked exactly what he was, a player clearly out of position. Once GH came to his senses and swapped him and Babbel, and Carra came in at LB, we got the back four which Bobby Robson later described as "four b****y great oak trees" and won the Treble with them.

Hero with a capital H.

In one year he won the League Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Charity Shield, European Super Cup and we qualified for the CL.
Hero.
Next.

I fucking loved henchoz.
He was my favourite player of that era. More than Sami, Didi, Owen any of them. He would have died for any challenge, he was a total fucking legend and would be in my all time LFC 25 man squad.
Dependable and solid he did the simple things brilliantly, was never flashy but was always effective and for my money one of the best tacklers we have ever had.

Total fucking hero. He was my favourite defender when he was here. I rated him at Blackburn and was over the moon when we signed him.

To think that we went through a spell trying Biscan at CB when he was here is truly bizarre.

Apologies mate, I wasn't rubbishing the concept as such, more that your selection of players is a touch bizarre. No one is gonna think Henchoz's anything but a hero for example.

Probably should have worded my initial post better though.

Ah no worries. I'll try and think of a better player that might polarize opinions and is worthy of a bit of debate. Or better still - Maybe you could. 🙂

I thought Henchoz was boss. I remember the SKY cameras following him and Sami in a pre-match warm-up, same colour hair, running in unison, stopping, strolling, running again, chatting, All in sync!. I would even argue that although Carragher was the better defender, Henchoz had the better partnership with Sami.

Can you post a list of the players you've highlighted thus far, plus their hero/zero consensus?
Blimey I can't remember them all and I'm rubbish at using the search tool.

From memory

Mark Walters - Zero
Jason Mcateer - Zero (I think but was controversial)
Jari Litmanan - Hero
Danny Murphy - Hero
Vlad Smicer - Hero but was a little borderline
Stephan Henchoz - Hero
Stevie G (as a bit of a joke) - Hero
Mark Wright (Maybe)
Titi Camara (Maybe zero)

I can't remember who else. Soz

Don't agree with either of those last two thoughts! I'd say they were pretty much on a par (Carra was perhaps a tad more mobile but Henchoz was the harder tackler). However, Carra's slight advantage in mobility made his combo with Sami IMO probably the better all-round partnership.

Cool, thanks. I think there was one for Milan Baros as well.

You'd rate Henchoz on a par with Carra as a defender? For a few years Jamie was rated by his piers as one of the finest defenders in Europe, Henchoz never got close to such an accolade.

Not disputing what you say but I don't recall such a chorus of praise for Carra from other players TBH. Either way: yes, I'd put them about equal. Henchoz was a harder tackler IMO (and, while we're on the subject, he was better in the air too) but Carra - until his last season or so - covered the ground better (Henchoz's one drawback was that he could be caught flat-footed on occasions, whereas that just didn't happen to Carra in his pomp).

Henchoz was another one of those non scoring CBs as well. I can't recall him getting even one. Sami seemed to weigh in with his fair share of defender goals. Much like Skrtel and Aggar. I know a defenders job is not to score but still a few would have been nice.

Was part of that because back in that time we would only send one of the CBs up and keep one back?

These days we send both in and keep the full backs back but I can barely even recall Henchoz ever being in the box!
