Henrikh Mkhitaryan - just a smokescreen

Dear Kennyd,

You have simply missed the point. While many of our legends come from countries that are "shit" at football, I daresay none of their signings were perceived as a gamble on the scale of ole' Henri. In this financial climate 20M spent by the club is a massive gamble for an Armenian player thats ace in the Russian League. You may beg to differ and that's your prerogitive.

I'm a tool? That coming out of the mouth of an idiot. How rich!

Regards

Ha ha, idiot? Me? You're passing on your wisdom about a player & you don't even know which league he plays in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 20m on ANY foreign player is a gamble, some more so than others, but sometimes there comes along a player that really excites & he is one. Where you casting your doubts over Suarez when we bought him? Or didn't you know what league he played in?

He looks like the type of player we've missed, the kind of Garcia/Meireles type who makes those runs from deep (or wide), that are difficult to pick up, ghosting into the box between defenders (though with alot more ability when running with the ball).

I like the look of him, though we need more steel in midfield too.

I thought we paid 20m for Hendo to do that? We need a playmaker.

He does look like the type of player we've missed - The kind that scores TWENTY FIVE goals from MIDFIELD in OPEN PLAY in the UKRAINIAN PREMIER LEAGUE.

It doesn't matter where he plays, we'll always have space for a player like that in the team if not the 'best eleven'.

Cheers Rurik for your thoughts, very interesting.

Again, having only seen him six or seven times in action, I am not in a position to map his strengths and weaknesses as much as you are.

I reckon however Rodgers would want to have an advanced playmaker in the team with Allen/Gerrard sitting further back alongside a more defensive minded option. If we are buying Henrikh I actually believe he'd be part of a front three with license to cut inside, swap position etc. A dynamic line of forwards. I don't think we will see him come in to play in the false nine or deep lying forward role, as he is not quite creative enough (as you say yourself he prefer to be on the end of the pass rather than make it) and I am not convinced he'd be a focal point for our attacks.

Whenever I've seen Shakhtar play and they have looked their best they are hitting teams on the counter where Henrikh's speed, agility, workrate, intelligent runs and great eye for goal have been extremely effective. Would our team and setup under Rodgers play to his strengths if positioned in a central role? I doubt it.

If we sell Suarez, and we most likely will, I believe we will buy Henrikh, if Suarez stays we won't. I reckon.

So if he plays in the forward line, do you see him on the wing? I think it's possible, but I'm not sure it's the most effective way to use him.

I think things are more flexible in modern football now. A player who plays "in the hole" does not necessarily need to be a playmaker or a focal point while a real playmaker can well be stationed on the wing. From a defensive standpoint, it's better to have your more defensively solid and tactically savvy players in the middle, and more creative and unpredictable types on the wings. That's another reason why I think Mkhitaryan starting in the AM position with Coutinho on the wing makes more sense than the other way around. We'll see what Rodgers thinks of that.

I think a front 4 of...

---------Sturridge(Borini)-----------
Coutinho-----Mkhitaryan----Aspas

...would be pretty strong and flexible, while...

---------Sturridge(Borini)-----------
Coutinho-----Mkhitaryan----Suarez

...would be almost unplayable. I wish we could find a way to afford that.

I'll say it again, I reckon this signing is the "add 20 goals player" - not dependent on Suarez leaving.

If Suarez goes, we'll sign a replacement.

I hope we do sign him regardless and that last line-up of Ruriks is pretty mouthwatering.

If we are going to be a bit more direct and I hope Rodgers looks to Germany (Dortmund/Bayern) to find some inspiration then that front four would cause havoc.

I'm sure he'll play in the centre. Aspas is the poor cunt that will be out wide and look on in disbelief as Johnson sprints 45 yards ahead of him.

No doubts were casted over Suarez because I actually watched a fair bit of him at Ajax. Neither am I casting doubts over Henri. Reading comprehension is pretty important here so maybe you'll actually understand for once.

Loosely paraphrased, what I said was 20M represents a gamble on an Armenian player nobody really even heard of. Nationality isn't really an issue. Its not that Armenia are pulling up trees. Its great that his a goalscoring phenom but regardless, his signing represents a gamble like most. Russian or Ukrainian League is not too much of a leap.

Light switched on yet?

If we buy him I think we'll go with a front three of him, Coutinho and Sturridge, with Sterling, Borini and Downing as back ups. Think Suarez will be gone.

Pretty much my take on it as well.

You can probably add Aspas too and perhaps Alberto.

Oh, and Ibe.

I have soooooo much faith in Ibe.

GO JORDAN, GO JORDAN, GO JORDAN!

NO! Not you, Henderson... there's a new Jordan in town.

*too much coffee alert*
