Harry Wilson - dead ball star

Not to put pressure on the lad, but this hit was Gerrard-esque:

Love how adjusts his run to the trajectory of the ball, not trying to touch it into his path like most players would have done. This is something Suarez does all the time, which makes so much sense – it's better to use the pace that's already on the ball and redirect it rather than slow it down with your touch and then speed it up again. This way he has the ball under control without touching it and the shot has more effortless power.

Can we do that?

Not 100% clear, but probably not, actually:

"He's our player for the year", said Lampard. "He's a Liverpool player for the future. I've answered this with Mason Mount before. We are looking after them for a year and hopefully improving them. Liverpool fans shouldn't worry because hopefully we'll give them a very good Harry Wilson when he goes back.

Derby boss Frank Lampard has confirmed Liverpool can recall 21-year-old striker Harry Wilson from his loan spell in January if they want to. (Talksport)

I hope we dont. Hes getting a good education in a footballing side who play a similar style and formation. 10 minutes at the end of games we have already won wont help the kid.

Plus I think learning from a player like lampard, who had an obscene knack for scoring goals from deep, can only improve him further

I haven't seen that much of the kid but it looks as though he's developing into more of a second striker than a winger. He seems to like playing between the lines.
Problem is, it's not a position that suits us.

Ideally it's versatility he's learning, rather than anything else. And, to be fair, our wingers cut inside a hell of a lot

Yeah, our winger do cut in, but they also have that explosive pace and ability to drift past players. Haven't seen much of that in Wilson.
Listen, I don't have a lot facts to base my assessment on just a few clips of his goals and the few games I've seen. He might be starting on the left or the right but it seems like many of his goals come from the middle.

I get the argument for him staying, but from LFC's perspective it might be actually better to have him here for 6 months to gauge how he fits (or doesn't) into Klopp's system before making a decision on his future in the summer. Staying at Derby is undoubtedly good for his development, but then he'll come here still an unknown quantity in the summer and by that time we will probably already have plans to buy players in his position. Whereas the way our squad is constructed now, we have a bit of a deficiency at the AM or winger positions – Shaqiri is the only one delivering the goods there, Ox is injured and Lallana ineffective. If Lallana leaves, that would open a spot for Wilson.

Although, in the 4-2-3-1 we've been moving to, he could be a decent back up to Firmino in that No 10 position.

As football educations go, it doesn’t get much better than having Jurgen Klopp and Frank Lampard in your corner. So it’s little wonder Liverpool star Harry Wilson, currently lighting up the Championship on loan at Derby, is dreaming big. And that’s why when the 21-year-old watches the Mersey derby at Anfield today, he will be hoping to line up alongside big pals Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez next season.

Few at Derby, including Lampard, would disagree after his impact since arriving at Pride Park at the start of the season. For Welsh winger Wilson is delivering performances that make a compelling case for a chance at Liverpool next season. He said: “I sat down with Jurgen Klopp at Melwood in the summer and we both agreed after doing well at Hull last season it would be good to be on loan again and playing regularly.

Wilson has hailed his education under Lampard (Image: EMPICS Sport)

“There were plenty of clubs wanting me but as soon as my agent Lee Robinson told me Derby were interested I had a good feeling. We are doing well and hopefully we’ll push for promotion. To to be learning from a legend like Frank Lampard is fantastic. I’m soaking up everything he’s telling me. It’s going really well.”

That’s an understatement. Sparkling performances, assists and spectacular goals – including a brace in Derby’s defeat of Swansea – have accelerated Wilson’s reputation, increasing his belief he can break into Liverpool’s first-team squad next season.

He said: “That’s the aim. I’ll be looking at Trent and Joe today hoping I’m playing with them next season. Its nice to see young lads doing well but when it’s your mates you have grown up and played with it makes it even better. Trent had an amazing year last year playing in so many games and then a Champions League final before going to the World Cup. And if Joe hadn’t been injured towards the end of the season he would have done the same I’m sure. It’s great to see them doing so well.”

The youngster, who shares a house with Chelsea’s Mason Mount, another Derby loanee, added: “When you look at the attacking talent at Liverpool it’s awesome but you’ve got to be confident in your ability otherwise you have no chance. It’s always going to be difficult to break in to a team with big stars like Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. But I trained with those guys for over a year before I went on loan to Hull in January and it raised my game. When you get a chance on loan you have to shine so when I do go back I’ll be in better shape to impress the manager.

Wilson, who made his debut for Wales aged just 16, knows Klopp is watching – and Kop pals like James Milner and Adam Lallana too. All three were quick to text him after his wonder-strike free-kick helped knock Manchester United out of the EFL Cup in September.

He said: “To score that goal as a Liverpool fan at Old Trafford was a special moment. When I watched the goal back on Twitter I didn’t realise it was as good as it was! At the time it happened so fast it was just a blur. I had a message off Jurgen that night. He said great game, great goal. “He thought it was a really good strike but he was more pleased with my overall performance rather than just the goal. It was nice to hear from him then a few of the players messaged me like James and Adam saying, ‘Well done mate’. “To have people who have done it in the Premier League for years messaging you is nice. It means a lot.”

Those goals wouldn't look out of place on Gerrard best goals of his career compilation.

His ball striking ability is certainly on par.

As for us career, I think it's best he stays where he is. If a player is flourishing on loan in a good environment, whilst learning from one of the best AMs the games seen them it seems insane to disrupt it. He'll have preseason to stamp his mark on this side and he'll be given every opportunity.

Would he even want to return now ? Swapping first team football and experience for what ? A bench and u23 games or whatever , he'd be mad to come back early

Well, first of all I don't think Klopp will bring him back unless he plans to use him. And if Jurgen Klopp tells you he needs you to come back and play with your mates Trent and Joe in a team that is in the title race and CL – hell yeah, you will run back! We'll be stronger and deeper in Wilson's position next season; 2nd half of this season might actually be his best chance establish himself at Liverpool.

He's much more likely to be in the playoffs of automatically promoted and be a Derby County hero, then he is a squadie with probably minutes rather than hours of first team football here, let alone us winning something in the process!

Who dos he start ahead? Whos place does he take on the bench? It'd be criminal to break what is a fantastic run of form up in return to training with 'mates'

It certainly doesn't work for him if he actually cares about playing football, im not sure it even benfits us at this point either!

Dumb idea.

I think he's good enough to play, not just train. Did any of us expect Trent to make it so soon? Or Gomez to establish himself as first-choice CB this season? Young players tend to develop quickly; this guy has scored 6 goals in his last 7 games in the Championship and none of these goals look like they were going to be prevented by EPL keepers, those were all real quality strikes.

He is not a finished article, obviously, but because of the goal threat he can probably give us more than Lallana at this point. For fucks sake, as we speak Mane has a cut on his foot and we have literally no one to play on the left wing against Bounemouth – it's either going to be Origi or Firmino (who should really be rested) playing out of position. As long as Ox is injured, there will be plenty of games where a player with his versatility could feature.
