McLeish linked with replacing Rafa at Liverpool

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish is the shock name being mentioned within boardrooms of the Premier League as a potential candidate for the Liverpool manager's job, should Rafa Benitez be lured away from Anfield by Juventus in the summer.

McLeish has built a formidable reputation for his achievements in solidifying the Premier League status of the Midlands club and word is that he can be prised away for a relatively cheap compensation because of his contract terms at St Andrew's.

While a move for Jose Mourinho has been mooted, it's thought the Portuguese coach's huge personal price tag would be difficult for Liverpool to be match, with McLeish's wage demands likely to better fit Liverpool's budget.

In addition, any move for the Inter Milan boss, presently earmarked for Manchester City if they change managers in the summer, would require a massive transfer budget.

McLeish is one of Sir Alex Ferguson's apprentices, and the pair struck up a perfect manager-captain relationship at Aberdeen, when Sir Alex was making a big impression at the beginning of his managerial career.

A Premier League chairman told Soccernet: "There has been mention of McLeish and Liverpool, but who knows how strong it might be. I would put it no more than 50-50, you never know.

"It is easy to see why a club like Liverpool would be interested [in McLesih] if Rafa Benitez did leave in the summer, as its common knowledge that Juventus have been showing interest in him."

Mind you, this 'exclusive' is by the anti-Rafa, sorry excuse for a journalist Harry Harris.

He's done a very good job this year (and last) and signed some decent players for Birmingham. I don't think it's an hysterical idea, but obviously I'd prefer someone who is more proven, and having Fergie's little prodigy in charge of us would hardly be right - not that the owners would give a toss.

If we were going to get someone from the Premiership, I'd sooner Hodgeson arrived.

I don't think it is in any more hilarious than if we were linked with Martin O'Neill, which probably wouldn't evoke such hilarity. He *is* a good manager, and I don't think there is much doubt about that. If we couldn't get a high profile manager I'd rather we went for someone like him than someone like Mancini, who would be just as much of a risk IMO.

"being mentioned within boardrooms as a potential candidate"

So basically, this lazy-arse journo's been drinking with some overweight chairman in a brothel somewhere & he's said, having just snorted a line of coke off a Thai girl's midriff, "I reckon Mcleish could do a job at Liverpool you know. They could do worse".

Ta-da, ready made story cos the fucker's only had an hours sleep & needs to get to the STD clinic asap cos his cock burns when he pees.

Sounds like he spent the evening with Avram Grant, not a chairman.

This would be like swapping a luscious strawberry for a fucking mangy stepped on banana.

No thanks.

I know you like the gaffer but steady on, mate.. ;D

Agree with your sentiment tho.

No, it isn't.

I dont think Mcleish is better than Rafa, and I wouldnt make that change; but any manager doing well in the Premiership will be looked at.

I think we need to have similar criteria to that with which we approached Houllier's replacement:

A respected coach with a proven track record in domestic and European competitions

Rangers and Birmingham isn't really good enough

Yes but using those criteria, and the ability to work with good ol' George and Tom with no budget and I think you'll find the ideal replacement for Rafa is Rafa. I just can't see any other serious candidates of the quality you mention even turning up for an interview.

Can the Madrid boss speak English? I doubt he'll be there long and he'd have good enough credentials.

No, it isn't. I can't believe people are having a go at the original poster and trying to justify this Mcleish rumour.

Pelligrini is a good coach.

They're midtable. And it's one season.

The comparison to O'Neill is ludicrous - O'Neill may not be to everyone's tastes, but he's massively improved almost every team he's managed, and has built his own squad in each case.

He's also a bit of a character who the media have a soft spot for. He also gets the best out of the players he has from Muzzy Izzet, Emile Heskey to giving young players a chance and helping improve their game like Ashley Young and Milner. He'd be my first pick to take over.

Erm, when McLeish and O'Neill were head to head in the Old Firm, it was very much honours even between the two, so I suppose it isn't that ludicrous to compare. It is also true that McLeish has improved every team he's managed.
