Hummels for me

I'd rather have Baba Ganoush.

I don't want us to lose money on him, but neither do I want to see him in our starting line-up. If we can sell for a decent price this summer, then I think we should do so. We need so much better if we want to return to the top.

Just sign him on for a 3 year extension, wait until Rafa gets another job, BAM, huge overinflated 10m+ plus fee for Lucas, guaranteed!

Lucas has done a great job and been quietly effective for most of this and last season. I'm happy to keep him around.

He absolutely raped utd and Chelsea this season but in turn been done over by the whack teams where he's gone missing.

Regardless of this I'm a Lucas fan, he comes across as a nice bloke who genuinely wants to play football for this club.

He's proven to an extent that when played in certain sysytemz and positions that he can play football too.

I'd be happy for him to be handed a new four year contract.

We need a squad, be could be part of that.
I am not a huge fan, he is what he is an average midfielder, but we need people like Lucas in the squad. He has certainly improved and if we could get this giving stupid fouls away in even more stupid places out of his system that would improve him even more.

Lucas is a victim of having been seen through the microscope whilst he has been developing.
I think it would have been hard for an experienced international to look good in our side over the past 2 years (the time when Lucas has been almost a permanent fixture) we as a team have been woeful.
What has been consistent during this time is Lucas continual progression.
In a time of missmanagement, asset stripping, board upheaval, player sales etc all the while our club has gotten worse and worse as has our first team. And in it a young lad making his trade and learning how to play at a top level has got on with it and never complained. He's made mistakes and had poor periods and always in the public eye of a very demanding public.
He probably should have been developing at a lesser club or in our reserves but we have NEEDED him in our first team. Thats not his fault. Its not his fault that we have been so poor that a kid from another continent with a mistake or two in his has been forced into almost continual action for two years when he should have been on loan at Charlton or heaven forbid left alone at Gremio until old and mature enough (physically and mentally) to handle a starting position in the centre midfield of the most decorated club in the most demanding league in the world. When Rafa signed him i doubt he expected him to play much for these last two years in fact.
But here he is. Growing up in public and becoming a handy player who can be relied on and who in the midst of the horror around him at times has remained quietly improving and pivotal to our successes as the year has gone by.
For the record the three best centre midfielders (DM) in my lifetime Souness, Mcmahon and Hamann arrived at the club at 25, 24 and 26 respectively. Perhaps if they had been asked to play week in week out for us at a younger age instead of Middlesbrough, Newcastle or whoever we wouldnt have had the patience with them either.

Im not saying lucas will match any of them of course, but to force the lad through his progression in the eye of this demanding public and then let him go on the cusp of appearing like a very fine player would be fucking retarded in mho.
Hes at the age now where he should be starting to play for a club our size and its our problem that he has had to play over a hundred games already not his.
He's a good kid, hes getting better all the time, he loves the club and hes coming to the age now when players of his type come into their own, so sign him up. Now.
He needs us way more than we need him. If he's willing to be paid as a backup player then I'd consider it.

If we were to sell him what clubs would be interested?
Shit ones.
Depending on what type of budget we'll have in the summer would be big factor in keeping him or not.
With 1 year left we're going to get less the the little we'd be able to get for him. So if he's just going to be replaced by another average Joe then I'd just give him an extension. And get one other good midfielder in and focus on other areas.
If we end up with Aqua back and can't sell Aqua I'd sell Lucas.

He gave up on football when Kenny came back and selected Lucas. I think 3 LFC managers doing this was just too much for him to take.

These two things are intrinsically linked, though.

As for Lucas improving year on year - I wholeheartedly agree. But I fear we're in danger of congratulating a shit player for being slightly less shit (which I also think is a symptom of our decline - that is, looking for something, anything to call a 'positive'). Don't get me wrong, he's had some good games for us this season, even more so than last season, but they are still outnumbered by his bad ones. That's not good enough, I'm afraid, and not the calibre of player we should be aspiring to if we have genuine ambition to compete with the best. I like his attitude, but I'm not convinced he loves the club, or would die for the shirt or anything. He just knows he's got it good here.

I said it before in an Alonso thread, but you needn't look any further than who he's replaced for the calibre of player we need. Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano. They have never been replaced, and that is why our midfield is threadbare. I don't mind Lucas as a squad player, but something tells me that wouldn't be to his liking. He's got regular football currently, which is why he's enjoying it here. When we buy a replacement this summer, which I sincerely hope we do, he should be given the option to stay and fight for his place, or look for another club. If he's happy to stay, then by all means keep him as a squaddie. Otherwise, I'd sell to the highest bidder.

Good posts on this thread.

I wouldn't be gutted if he left, and I'd certainly like to see us have more quality in midfield and for him to get fewer games.

But unlike 12 months ago, I'm not desperately mad for him to be sold. As Oncy says, he's still kinda young and unlike a lot of players in his situation, he seems to be improving year after year. Dalglish's arrival has also led to him trying a more varied set of passes. And he's a good kid.

I hope our first XI next season doesn't include Lucas. Back up: yes (but Im not sure even about that). He wont turn into a top player.

He's been posting on TLW though and there was a big Lucas thread on there recently, which was almost RAWK-esque. Brendan was having aneurysms all throughout.

In fairness, so was I. Especially when some cunt said Lucas was superior to Alonso.

Oncy when Lucas is at his peak he might be a league average midfielder. It's not worth waiting for.

I went on that RAWK thread that someone posted here a while back and dared to challenge the weight of opinion about Lucas. Within about an hour someone had suggested that Lucas would improve the team that beat Forest 5-0 in '88.

It's like a parallel universe there.
I disagree.
Its far too early to say that imo. Its different for strikers etc where you expect to see a spark from a younger age. I coukd name plenty of DM who got a lot better as their careers progressed.
To name another two, at 24 Makalele hadnt even left Nantes, from where he spent 1 year at Marseille and a further 2 years at Vigo before (at 27) he went to Madrid.
Redondo had just signed for Tenerife at 24.

You can be an okay player at 23 and turn out to be world class, providing you improve as you go obviously.

Darren Fletcher is a good one, he was a bit meh but has turned into an important player for them. Its nice to see someone wanting a new contract, not looking to move for cl football or some other nonsense like homesick wives.

Oncy name your price. I'm willing to bet he will never be world class. He's too slow both in mind and body, and is technically fairly average.

His next move will not be to a top club.

Can you please explain how Lucas is "technically average"?

Ta.

I've seen a bunch of games this season where Lucas has done everything asked of him in the position he's been put into. He's proven he can play really well not just against the dross (Stoke at home, where he was immense) but against top opposition, (2 games against the Chaves, a 1 against the scum. His time at the club has seen an upward trajectory throughout. I'm not a rawkite believer that he's the second coming, but I've witnessed plenty of games where he hasn't just looked decent, but has been excellent. Yes he still suffers from crap tackles at bad times, but there's plenty out there who have been guilty of that and forgiven. I was not a huge fan, but in his last 18 months he has really won me over. He has battled against the dislike of the crowd, the castigation by the press, and a bunch of indifferent performances that have been held more against himthan any other player I can remember and yet he has emerged as one of the players who has played consistently well all season. He's a tough wee character, and that is something that bodes particularly well. Under the king he could well blossom into the player we dreamed we'd signed from Gremio.

I'm guessing he means, his technique isn't great or rubbish, its somewhere in between.

I'm not overly fussed about lucas, I'm of the opinion that we need to address other areas of the pitch before CM. once these positions are taken care of then, sure, replace lucas but until, 'meh'

I will say though, if we want to earn consistent points away from home then lucas has to be stronger on the ball, but there are also other things we need to address before we become a threat away from home.
