The Football Association have confirmed that they will not be charging Steven Gerrard with violent conduct.
Television pictures appeared to show Gerrard elbowing Portsmouth's Michael Brown in full view of referee Stuart Atwell, who awarded a free kick to the visitors without reprimanding the Huyton-born midfielder.
It was expected that the Liverpool captain, 29, would be hit with a three-match ban for the exchange with Brown during his side's 4-1 win over Pompey in last night's clash at Anfield.
But after reviewing the off-the-ball incident, the FA have refused to punish the Reds skipper.
Speaking after the game, Rafael Benitez defended his captain, insisting: "I haven't seen it but I was asking and I think it was nothing."
Gerrard's latest reprieve comes after being cleared of unsportsmanlike conduct during Liverpool's defeat to Wigan Athletic last week following claims that he had made a V-sign at Andre Marriner after receiving a caution from the match official
