Been thinking about this for a while and seeing the other thread about next season it seems a good time to post about this.

What do you think about Gerrard next season and beyond?

Argiably the biggest issue is England, not impressed by the rumours that he will carry on to the Euros, that in no way will benefit LFC or his LFC future, really hope he bows out after Brazil because he should really be concentrating everything on LFC and winning trophies which we have a great chance of doing over the next few years.

Hes carried us on his own back for a lot of his career, its suprising it hasn't caught right up with him already tbh but surely if hes still slogging it around with England it will only bring his career end date forward, the likes of Scholes and Shearer were retiring from England at 29/30 years old to concentrate on their club careers.

Next season will be a first in that Gerrard will not be an automatic pick for every game, that simply isn't going to happen for obvious reasons, not even Suarez will start every game next season.

If he gives up England and Rodgers manages him competantly which im in no doubt he will (and already is) then there could be 4 and at a stretch 5 more seasons of Gerrard.

Owen (i know) actually said something quite interesting the other day about Gerrards new role about how when he has time to pick his passes he is unstoppable in that regard where as when hes further up the pitch under more pressure with less time its obviously not as easy, probably quite obvious but it was a good point, he doesn't have to run as much either nowadays with the young legs in and around him.

Got to admit like many - thought Gerrard deep wasn't a good idea but it looks like a genius move from Rodgers.

You reckon he can play till he's 38?

I think he could but only if he jacks off England after the World Cup so he can concentrate fully on us, really starting to think it is a masterstroke by Rodgers putting Gerrard where he is, think playing there can only help to prolong his career.

If Giggs and Scholes can play till 39/40 then i don't see why Gerrard can't get to late 30s, obviously his work load will have to get managed and decreased as the seasons go by but hes a special player who has shown he can adapt to anything pretty much.

If Gerrard manages to stay fit and motivated I don't see a reason why he can't prolong his career.
I'm just a bit worried about his recurring groin injuries

The old Gerrard would have given the England squad a mad exciting frenzy of tug jobs, dashing from player to player, trying to do it all himself, taking too much of the credit when it went well and spraining something in the process. But this new mature Gerrard? I'm not so sure. I can see him picking his moment and trying to get the whole team moving as one, with him orchestrating things from behind.

Just playing the 3 upcoming friendlies and the 3 group games at the World Cup will see Stevie equal Beckhams appearance figure and leave him 10 short of Shiltons record. I reckon he'll be tempted to carry on and reach another milestone. I hope not though, I want him to concentrate on Liverpool and enjoy his last few seasons as a club player. He has been looking happier this season than in a long time.

Is playing 6/7 games a year really going to make that much of a difference?
it is not only the games... it is energydraining to be invovled with travelling etc. And he has a huge responsibility as Captain. However it is up to him. ill support him no matter what he does.

By that logic, we may as well ask him to sack off his kids because they'll be more draining then the odd media appearance. He's not an OAP.

I guess he has got a nanny for that? However I am quite sure some footballers let small kids interfere with their career... Could that have happened to Reina the last season with us? I am quite sure that was what happenend to Flo (at Chelsea).

He should have retired after the last world cup, the last 4 years have been a ridiculously foolish mistake which almost succeeded in ending his top flight career were it not for Rodgers.

I think those 6-7 games per year is around 6 weeks per season's rest that he could be getting. I'd say there'll be a bit of a difference towards the end of each season. But that's why we have to build a great squad.
I was actually very pleased to see Lucas come on for Gerrard the other day and look very calm and reassuring. Don't know if we need someone better to cover for him, but I would assume any DM better than Lucas would demand playing time instead of playing second fiddle to Gerrard. Tough one.
