Manager Stuart Pearce, who made 78 international appearances for England, leads the squad and will take control of his first match with Team GB when they meet Brazil in a warm-up fixture at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium on the 20 July.

"It has not been an easy task to finalise my squad for this tournament, and the stature of the competition and uniqueness of the occasion has underlined the importance of every choice I have made.

"With just 18 places it is very different from other international tournaments, the options are limited, but it is the Olympic Games and every player in this squad should be very proud they have a chance to compete for a gold medal on home soil.

"I remember the huge advantage we gained from playing in front of our own fans during Euro '96, and I'm sure with the nation behind us it could be a fantastic tournament for us."

Team GB 18-man squad: 13 Englishmen, 5 Welsh, no Scots, no Irish.

Swansea are gonna be hit hard at the start of the season, firstly losing Caulker and Sigurdsson then losing Taylor, Allen and Sinclair to the Olympics. ouch!

The dates seem slightly better than how taxing the competition sound.

The squad will meet up on Saturday ready for their opening Group A game against Senegal at Old Trafford on Thursday, July 26. Then it's a date with the UAE on Sunday, July 29 at Wembley, before the final group game at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday, August 1.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals are scheduled for August 4 and 7 respectively, while the final is due to take place at Wembley on Saturday, August 11, just seven days before the Swans kick-off their Premier League campaign at QPR.

Pearce has named his 18-man squad, leaving out Beckham as expected.
"Form plays a big part and I don't think there is a manager around who picks on sentiment," he said.
"I have to be comfortable when I have made decisions based solely on football grounds alone, nothing else."
Pearce also ruled out any possibility of using Beckham in a coaching capacity, although the British Olympic Association (BOA) has been in touch with the LA Galaxy midfielder's representatives about a possible Games role.
"We only have seven passes [for backroom staff]. We have no passes for that," added Pearce.
"The players have to be prepared to come through the door on form alone and that happens to be the case with staffing too. They have their role to play."

Then why the fuck did you pick GIGGS!!!!!?????

seriously , how did such a useless manager as Pearce swing himself such high profile roles and position within the FA ?

I gather this was some Fat Cat plan to pick a so called "up and coming' english manager , train him up for one day taking over the senior team . Fair enough i suppose except it's Stuart Fucking Pearce . Anyway it looks like they're determined to make it work .

Why Pearce? Just look at the senior team. The best English manager they could find was Hodgson. In the papers some of the chatter beforehand was about bringing back Hoddle or Venables.

Gotta be slightly embarrassing that the best and the most hyped managers in the English game currently, aren't even English.

Why pick Bellamy with his knees even if they were to go all the way to the final he wouldn't be fit to play in half the matches. There's no chance he could play 6 matches in 16 days.

I don't know who i'd bring as the 3 overage players. There aren't a lot of options if you rule out the Euro 2012 players.

Spanish team

Goalkeepers: De Gea (Manchester United), Robles (Atletico Madrid), Marino (Villarreal)

Defenders: Azpilicueta (Marseille), Alba (Valencia), Martinez (Athletic Bilbao), Dominguez (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Montoya (Barcelona), Botia (Sporting Gijon), San Jose (Athletic Bilbao), Martinez (Real Sociedad)

Midfielders: Thiago (Barcelona), Herrera (Athletic Bilbao), Koke (Atletico Madrid), Romeu (Chelsea), Isco (Malaga), Mata (Chelsea), Muniain (Athletic Bilbao)

Forwards: Adrian (Atletico Madrid), Vasquez (Espanyol), Tello (Barcelona), Rodrigo (Benfica)

That Spanish team is delicious though modi

I'd be content if that was our first team.

Absolutely. But the key thing for me is the inclusion of overage players. Spain doesn't seem to have any. I'd feel sorry for any inexperienced U21 defenders who are up against Suarez and Cavani. Very sorry.

Pearce is an embarrassment and I really hope we get caned. I find his whole approach cringeworthy - you can smell the desperation on him.

The more I've thought about it, it should have been compulsory for him to include Scottish and Irish players to ensure the squad was representative of GB.

Brazil:

Goalkeepers: Rafael Cabral (Santos), Neto (Fiorentina)
Defenders: Marcelo (Real Madrid), Rafael (Manchester United), Danilo (Porto), Alex Sandro (Porto), Thiago Silva (AC Milan), Juan (Inter Milan), Bruno Uvini (Sao Paulo)
Midfielders: Romulo (Vasco da Gama), Ganso (Santos), Oscar (Internacional), Sandro (Tottenham Hotspur), Lucas (Sao Paulo)
Forwards: Neymar (Santos), Alexandre Pato (AC Milan), Leandro Damiao (Internacional), Hulk (Porto).

Not too shabby. Overage players: Hulk, Thiago Silva, Marcelo

I can't believe Pato is still under age, he's only 22 yet it seems like he's been around since the dawn of time.

Athletic Bilbao defender Mikel San José has pulled out of Spain's Olympic squad, which is currently training in Las Rozas ahead of the London 2012 Games, with chicken pox.

Having performed all of the relevant tests, the Spanish national team doctor confirmed that the centre-half will be unable to play in London after being struck down by the illness.

"Mikel has chicken pox and has to withdraw because of the risk of infecting the rest of the squad. There are a lot of players who have already had it, but others haven't and we can't run the risk of taking a player who could infect the others", Jorge Guillén said.

"We've tested all of them to find out who needs to have gamma globulin shots and who has already been vaccinated. But the priority is to separate the player from the squad", the team doctor added after Luis Milla put the group through its paces in the morning.

San José did later return to training after undergoing the tests that revealed he was suffering from the illness. However, although he was able to do some running for a few minutes, in the end he didn't join his teammates for the rest of the session.

I probably have the minority view here but Beckham did a lot of work getting this country the Olympics and a lot of work on it since, certainly more that all of the players combined. As Team GB is a complete joke anyway, why not include him in the squad as a thank you? Giggs is there and he hardly plays for Man Utd . Pearce is just trying to prove he is his own man etc and it was stupid decision. I have no particular love for Beckham but he deserved it.
