Are ruining things!

After anelka did his lovelyi celebration associated with anti-semitic things... Photos have emerged of our beloved Sakho doing it, as well as nasri

Can our politically knowledgeable posters enlighten us?

From what I gather Sakho pleaded ignorance to this a while ago. The gesture also means "fuck the system" according to the comedian.

Any other info?

I want to know in what way this is "reverse Nazi salute." Does it mean the meaning is reversed or is the meaning the same, and just the gesture is different?

UPDATE: Wikipedia clarifies this a bit:
Dieudonné started a trend among his supporters of getting photographed making an ambiguous gesture he invented and dubbed the "quenelle". For some it is just a vulgar gesture of opposition to French institutions, for others it is an antisemitic gesture and was dubbed a "convoluted Nazi salute".

It means fuck the system? Maybe they've been watching Les Misérables lots lately and are getting in the mood of things

maybe people (especially multi-millionaire footballers) should grow up and stop doing stupid signs regardless of their meaning

also fuck that, Anelka should be banned and anyone else who brings any bullshit like that on the pitch

The gesture is known as the ‘Quenelle,’ labelled as a reversed Nazi salute and made famous a few years ago by the controversial Dieudonné, a French comedian from African background.

In the last few years, Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, his full name, has become an anti-Semitic activist and campaigner. Dieudonné used the Quenelle for the first time in 2009 when he was a candidate for the European elections at the helm of his own party, the anti-Zionist party, despite arguing that it was a generic anti-establishment symbol.

the 'comedian' openly denies the holocaust (that's part of why he called it that), claims he's only 'anti-zionist' but his shit is basically anti-semitic, he's constantly sued in France ... if he was anti-establishment, I wouldn't care ... if he was anti-Isarel, i wouldn't care either (i may disagree but his right to be opposed to any country etc). once he starts with his anti-semitism and comes off with this 'reverse sieg heil' (oh, it's not meant to be that? tell that to the people who came out of those camps you fucking twat), then to me he's crossed a red line ... as i said in the other thread, these people and the comedian are fucking pussies ...

I'm guessing the footballers did it more to be "edgy" than for any other reason, some sort of perverted fashion statement.

Either way though, it's unacceptable. LFC should certainly make that clear to Sakho.

it's a difficult issue. anti-semitsim is to be abhorred, but freedom of expression is so fundamentally important that it should not, unless it is leading to immediate incitement of violence, be curtailed. the best way to fight this ignorance/bigotry is through open debate, banning things only serves to make them more appealing to morons and leads to us be complacent about why we hold things to be dear.

the one slight exception here is that anelka did his 'salute' in the stadium, which some may argue is not 'public' space but commercial space that the football authorities can regulate and footballers consent to the rules to participate. I still think the fundamental of freedom of expression override this, but there is a point here. contrast to Sakho who seems to have carried out his gesture in a private capacity.

finally, do we know what this comedian actually thinks he is doing with this act? I'm assuming it is anti-semitism, but it would be good to understand what this guy actually thinks.

LTW - I've seen people calling for Anelka to be jailed on Twitter. Judging by the names of the users they are of Jewish / Israeli origin.

What's your take on that?

If the gesture is anti-Semitic then it's possible that someone could say he's inciting racial or religious hatred, in which case, that's a criminal offence.

Oh and imagine the real fuss, if a prominent Jewish footballer (an oxymoron I know) had insulted Islam in some way.

I think jail is a bit ridiculous. Perhaps they have a different view of it in France where this comedian guy appears to be more of a big deal but over here not many have really heard of him.

Jail is far far too extreme, and it would only give more attention to this twat in France. He'll get a 5 game ban probably, and I think that's fair if the FA find it's a legitimate hate sign. If they don't, I cannot really complain despite my feelings on it. Regardless, the French president (Hollande) & Sports Minister have come out very harshly on this ... It's a rage going around Europe now - people are doing this at Auschwitz, in Israel and posting it ... "anti-establishment" mind.

Or imagine the fuss if a footballer (say Evra) would accuse a fellow footballer (say Suarez) of racially abusing him. Oh. Wait...

Freedom of expression is a very nice and important thing. But there are red lines. And those guys seem to be abusing the freedom of expression. And we all know vey well what happens when freedom of expression is used against Islam...

I wonder what would people say if Sakho used that salute at Anfield.

BTW, I bet Salah would love that salute. Let's get him.

Denies the Holocaust (the name of this 'quenelle' has something to do with it) ... Constantly being sued for anti-semitism ... (Notice, I don't care about his political stance re: Israel, even if he supports it disappearing ). He claims the 'reverse sieg heil' is just anti-establishment and anti-zionist ... It's just too much of a pussy to admit he hates Jews.

If the FA genuinely think he hates Jews, he's getting an 8 game ban. If they think he hates the establishment, it will be 10. Either way Anelka is getting fucked. His best chance is to claim an arm injury. Suarez bit his arm

Great. Blame the victim rather than the offender 'coz it's a lot easier that way. Nice one.

ha ...way to read between the lines to suit whatever you want to see . Where did i blame anyone ? And if i was i am blaming everyone , they can all fuck off.

Here's a spade, sunshine - keep digging.

digging ? what the fuck are you on about ? all i am saying is i am tired of hearing about this religion hating that religion blah blah , it's tiring and never ending . Is it not a valid debate to ask if religion causes more bad than good ?

anyway no need to answer as i am sure neither of us really care what the other thinks . Enjoy your sunday "sunshine" .

I know that footballers are not the sharpest knives in the drawer but this is silly. At the very least, both Sakho and Anelka are coming across as utterly stupid if they're publicly calling themselves "friends" of this man.

Hating Jews is shite and he deserves whatever he gets as he knew what he was doing. Religion is still wank though.
