Who was the best finisher you've seen at the club?

I only caught the last few years of Rush as a player for us. I grew up watching Fowler and then Owen so I'm going to go for Fowler obviously. He was simply born with that finishing talent. A freak.

Fowler could score a goal blind folded from almost anywhere on the pitch. Shame he lacked the professionalism his talent deserved.

Yeah it looks to be a /thread answer but I'd be interested to see if anyone can make a case for someone else, Rush for example.

If Fowler is #1, who's second best?

I grew up watching the same players as you, I'd go Fowler too. He was hands down my favourite player.

I think you'd have to give a mention to Torres though, even including the final year he still finished on 65 goals in 102 appearances, broke a few records in those first couple of seasons too.

To be fair we've been blessed with great strikers over the years, with a number of truly remarkable players. Fowler was a complete natural and so deadly until his injury he had a two year spell when it seemed like he never ever missed. Rush was also lethal in every way. It helps that both of them were red through and through.

Owen's hamstrings relegate him below those two but in terms of sheer lunatic excitement his pace pre injury was one of the most startling exciting remarkable things I've ever seen on a football pitch.

Torres left us with a sour taste and that perhaps clouds many peoples judgement of his level, he was simply sensational and for two seasons we could lay claim to having the best striker in the world.

Finisher possibly Folwer edges it but Torres was a more complete player IMO.

The status and affection that Rush and Fowler deserve and despite their brilliance, because they were just that brilliant, I still think the best striker we've ever had in my years watching is Suarez... He was dripping with skill and where Fowler has boyish impudence Suarez had determination which was bordering on the maniacal technically all round he is the best IMO.

I find it incredible to think that Messi is better than him... Mind boggling ... And from the la Lisa I've watched I find myself disagreeing that Neymar is better than Suarez...

Apart from the fact that both grew up supporting Everton. Like many of our great players, Owen, McManaman, Carragher and McMahon, to name but a few.

Suarez without any doubt at all but it is very difficult to compere players from different generations. The ball change more often now for example and the average player is better.

You would have to pick one for every generation. You can only say who is the best now and not who is the best all time IMO.

Suarez would probably scored 50+ league goals a season against the old time english central defenders. Fowler would get it much more difficult in todays game because the players are better preperad.

As if. Fowler wasn't playing when fucking Charles Charley Charles was puffing on a fag and playing football after a shift down the fucking mines.

He was playing against the likes of Schmeichel, Keane, Vieira, Adams, Terry, Woodgate, Stam and Ferdinand. Why don't you stop posting? You're shit at it.

Fowler was a great finisher but Rush in his first spell with us was simply amazing, though he was playing in a much better team. When Rush had a one on one you just expected him to score.

Fowler may not have been the fittest of players, but he still played in the modern era. Besides, in his pomp he was a natural; all he needs is chances.

Fowler was at his peak through the 90's, Arn may have never seen Fowler play.

If you're 25 and under you might not appreciate Fowler as much as those that are older.

Fowler is definitely the best finisher I've seen at Liverpool. We've had more impressive players like Suarez, but simply for finishing Fowler was king.

I still remember that 5 goals game at Anfield. You just knew that this lad was special.

Fowler could score so many different types of goals. I was watching that 100 club on Sky sports the other month and so many are just brilliant.

As Liverpool supporters we have been truly blessed with the striking talents we have had in our various teams across the decades. Seriously - I don't think any other English team has had the quality of strikers we have had, and what is frustrating is that even now despite our lack of scoring this season we possess probably the most talented of the current crop of English strikers in Daniel Strurridge. Personally I thought he had a shit game but the commentators on the stream I was watching were still trying to big him up - they only do this when they have a preference for a certain someone to lead the English line.

To answer the question - I don't think we can argue regarding finishing on a consistent level, the ultimate 'fox-in-the-box' for us was Fowler. But the problem these days is that having just a finisher in your team is not good enough - strikers have to be so much more these days, in the mid 90's in order to overcome those tough Italian defenses - they needed pace and the ability to beat the last few defenders. Michael Owen was a great finisher, so was Torres.

I would say that 'Suarez' tops the lot in terms of the complete striker but he had to develop into a great finisher because I remember in his first season he would get into great positions but more often he would screw up the final shot. We saw the best of his ability in his last season and a half with us.

I would also like to add - that strikers need to be put into a position to have those chances - there is a need to have the creative talent around them to get the best out of them. If we take that into account - then one could argue that Owen did exceptionally well because when he played for us there was a lack of creative players in our team and we were heavily reliant on his pace and finishing to win games.

Fowler - had a lot creative support when he played for us (McManaman/Redknapp/Barnes+)
Torres - had the best of SG, and Alonso years.
Suarez - had Sterling, Sturridge, Coutinhio

Owen - had Heskey/Gerard

As this thread can give wonderful discussions these questions often ends up critisisng perfect players to strengthen your own choice. ....

We had a bouquet of nice finishers... pick yours and stand by him! !! Fowler for me.

I was referring to 1 on 1 finishing in the other thread. Not pure finishing.

In terms of 1 on 1s, Owen, as much as I dislike the slimey manc weasel nowadays, was the best I've seen. Was so confident he'd score when 1 on 1 with keeper, it's when he was at his devastating best. Rarely seemed to miss.

His hat-trick goal at St James Park (in 97 or 98 I think) still remains one of my favourite goals. Little lob over Shay Given. Owen would have been about 18 at the time and it was when I was properly getting into footie and I just thought he was the greatest thing ever. Loved that wee cunt.
