RAFA: DIFFICULT BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE
James Carroll at the Stade Gerland 04 November 2009

Rafa Benitez spoke of his disappointment following the 1-1 draw with Lyon on Wednesday evening - but insisted Liverpool can still qualify for the Champions League knockout stage.
Ryan Babel fired the Reds into an 83rd minute lead at the Stade Gerland, but Lisandro Lopez struck an equaliser for Les Gones with just seconds of normal time remaining.

In order to progress into the last 16, Liverpool must now beat both Debrecen and Fiorentina, and hope the Italians drop points at home to Lyon next time out.

"We are really disappointed because it was a great opportunity for us," Benitez told his post-match press conference in France.

"We had some chances, but again it was a late goal against Lyon that made a massive difference.

"Clearly it is difficult for us to qualify, but not impossible. We have to win our game and see what happens in the game with Fiorentina and Lyon. Then we will approach the last game.

"We have a chance and the main thing is to play well against Debrecen and then see what the situation is for our last match."

Benitez dismissed claims Lyon's equaliser came as a result of Liverpool pushing forward in search of a second goal.

"If you analyse the goal we conceded, we had a lot of players in position and we were not in a bad position," he said.

"We made a mistake, but not because we were too high or trying to attack. We were trying to control the game, but we couldn't.

"But football is like this - sometimes you need luck, and we didn't have it in the end."

The boss admitted he was pleased with the spirited performance of his players, in spite of the current injury situation at Anfield.

And Benitez revealed the Reds could welcome back Martin Skrtel for Monday's Anfield clash with Birmingham City.

"I think we had too many problems before the game, so I am quite pleased with the performance of the players," he said.

"We had many players in different positions, and they did well.

"I think it will be good to analyse the performance of the team. The players will see we were working very hard and had many chances and that is positive.

"The players know if they work as hard as tonight they will win matches.

"Hopefully we will have Skrtel available for the next game and we can manage things in a different way."

Quizzed about the fitness of Fernando Torres, who played for 87 minutes in the South of France, Benitez replied: "I think he was okay. When he is playing with pain it is not easy.

"He was inconsistent because he was having to stop and start again, but we have some time and we will be working with him."

It's funny how winning teams make their own luck.

How is it unlucky that poor players missed changes and poor defending lead to us not closing out a game.

And would it not be just as correct to say that we were lucky Babel pulled a goal out of thin air to put us in a position to win.

Bottom line is we have not been good enough in all 4 games so far.
You could argue we did enough to get 9 points so far but we shouldn't be in this position full stop.

Blaming a lack of luck is what losers do.

Winners lift cups and go home and f*ck the prom queen.

Lyon were a poor side, they have more injury problems than us

if we played some fast flowing football against them - rather than passing backwards and sideways for the majorty of the game - we could have easily beaten them by more than 1 goal

if he brought Aquilani on even for 15 minutes we might have opened them up and got another goal, their centreback wasnt even a centreback, a few good balls behind the defence and that would have been enough. Masher and Lucas will NEVER do it, worse still they're not dynamic enough, dont shoot or create enough. They played as well they could and thats it, the game was heading for 0-0 until a creative player decided he was going to shoot.

we made it far too easy for them.

if he brought Aquilani on even for 15 minutes we might have opened them up and got another goal - WE SCORED OUR FIRST GOAL WITH 6 AND A HALF MINUTES LEFT, their centreback wasnt even a centreback, a few good balls behind the defence and that would have been enough. - AGAIN, FOOTBALL 1.01 FOLKS

we made it far too easy for them.

You're shit.
[/quote]

tell me, why is it shit? Masher and Lucas ambling round not knowing what to do with the ball is exactly the problem we face. Neither has the thrust or the ability to get the ball forward. so all our attacks come from Kuyt when he's not miscontrolling, or Voronin who isnt interested and gives it away or Torres who has to do somthing on his own or AGGER who has to take a chance to come forward (3 times in that game) to show some initative but leave us exposed at the back

there's no cohesion or real football flowing from the midddle, neither Lucas or Masher will take the ball and run with it they just pass it off and it's a predictable, slow, pattern. The game had 0-0 written all over it and some of us utterly frustrated until Babel decided to shoot, it was the only way we were going to score 1 goal tonight from something special and outrageous because it certainly wasnt coming from a flowing team move

Rebel, that was a sparkling performance considering confidence levels are rock bottom. Key players are out injured. The manager is being questioned left right and centre. Away from home in Europe.
Get. A. Grip.

Christ people, can you even *believe* we've been this stupid for so long? Discussions about formation, tactics, personnel and set-up, when all along it's been staring us right in the face and we've missed it...

"a few good balls behind the defence and that would have been enough." - IT'S THAT FUCKING EASY.

err, they had to win the game. just keeping the ball is not good enough

We played 'well' if you define well having plenty of possession and doing fuck all with it. I dont think we played well at all, particularly 2nd half we were fucking awful and we were asking to get hit on the counter and to lose the game. Babel scored a wonderful goal out of nothing, the only way we were going to get one tonight but then the defence managed to fuck it up anyway so that's that

if we actually played a bit of football rather than sideways and backwards all night we might have had 2 goals

I disagree Ryan, I've been thinking about it for a while and I reckon it's much simpler. All we need to do is start scoring more than the other teams.

Rebel. Our confidence is shot to pieces. We're in a dismal run of form. Yes, the Champions' League campaign has been a big disappointment but looking at the bigger picture, we've got something to build on. Even I'm not going to question the players or manager tonight. Let's take stock and look forward to the next game.

it's only possible with Aquilani so im shocked he wasn't introduced for at least 15 minutes. I expect nothing creative from Lucas and Masher, the best you can hope for is that they're tidy and don't fuck up their 5 yard passes which they didn't so congrats to them but you need more at this level.

We don't need to resort to such cheating ways Geroge. Rudimentary football is in.

WTF what?

I'd like to think I give a reasoned argument as to why I think things are going wrong Pat. I don't just moan for the sake of it. Believe it or not, I do actually want us to win things and win things under Rafa. My gut feeling is telling me tonight, in the long run, is going to benefit us.

Alright, let's take stock of where you're at here Rebel, just so newcomers don't get lost.

You've given up on the Babel sold to fund Pepe's wages lark.
Similarly, Lyon have more injuries than us. Again that stab in the dark has been thron back at you.
Next we moved onto Bring Aqulani on for the last 15 and we'd have scored a second in that time, ignoring the fact we only got our first with a little over 6 minutes to go.
Then we got the stellar "GET THE BLOOMIN BALL IN BEHIND" tactic, which not surprisingly, you've not returned to backing up.
And now we're onto "keeping the ball is not enough".

That's a lot of darts right there Rebel, and you haven't even hit the fucking board with any of them.

What and a Liverpool fan claiming we have been unlucky when we are out of the league by November again isn't cliche-ridden cringe?

I'm sick of us making excuses for the shite that was on display today and for the best part of this season.

Rafa bought almost the entire team that played today and bar one or two they simply are not good enough to wear the shirt.

It's bitterly disappointing and the only think worse is people making excuses for it.

right ok so your attitude is that there's nothing wrong, we can have Lucas and Masher play well and have games heading for 0-0 all season just as long as they're 'playing well' (in the way you define it) and you're relying on Babel or Torres to score a 30 yard screamer. Forget about actually playing good football, developing some flowing moves or creating clear cut chances
