The truth of the matter is that Messi would not be missing the chances that Ronaldo has been afforded so far in this tournament. For some reason, in my mind I cannot accept either Messi or Ronaldo as the two best players in the world at the moment - mainly because they play at club level in teams that are overloaded with other talent. Dare I say it - but imagine Suarez in the Barcalona team, or Steven Gerard in his prime playing for Real Madrid when they had Zidane. It seems that in this tournament - no matter how many times a really good club footballer with a high goalscoring record misses chances at this tournament - there is no error on his part, the commentry over Ronaldo's missed efforts was never a case of 'He should have scored that...', he is just brilliant for shooting at goal and missing it or having it saved by the goalkeeper.

As I think Giles said, he does a lot of things great players do, but he does a lot of things a great player would never do.

It's the additional stuff he does which means most people will never regard him as highly as Messi, Maradona and Pele. When talking in that calibre you're talking about the complete package, and Ronaldo lets himself down by the way he carries on.
