I'm not sure why people are so intent on him being a success. He's been solid but far from fantastic - maybe its just the fact that he is solid and dependable; everything that Aurelio isn't. It is a relief to see some stability in the position but I don't think Evra etc have anything to worry about at this point.

Agree to a point Wiz, but I'm happy to admit he's been better than that I think.

There are still question marks over him defensively for me, and I'm absolutely certain we're going to concede a ridiculously stupid goal at some stage on account of him trying to walk/pass his way out of the 6 yard box.

He's been excellent going forward, so much so that we could just leave Downing out and let Enrique run the left wing on his own.
[/quote]

You see I've thought the opposite, I've thought he's been a slight let down going forward but very dependable at the back, although I do share your concern about him walking it out of the 6 yard box.

He's getting fawned over because we've had muck there for so long that no one can hardly believe we have a decent LB at Liverpool.

He's come in and looked like one of our better players every week. I was probably a bit on the fence with him beforehand, so I've been delighted. I think he's a great role-model for Jack Robinson, who is going to be a really excellent FB soon enough.

Re: Enrique

I'd love to hear from the numties who thought we didnt need a new left fullback and that Johnson and Robinson on the left would suffice.

To be honest, that was my position and if it wasn't for the fact that Enrique was a steal, it probably would still be. Kelly is our best RB, and Johnson was playing really well at LB and Flanno is also capable of covering either FB position.

Enrique has come in and been excellent, so fair dos, and with Glenjo's and Kelly's injury records it was certainly the right decision by the management.

Watch his overlap routine with Bellers. It's their go to move. Enrique will get more assists this season.

I think Enrique has been an excellent addition. He's strong, quick, difficult to get round, and generally just an accomplished football player. Just like I said before we signed him.

Wenger on attacking fullbacks:

"For me, having a full-back who creates is an important part of winning. Take the Brazilian national team, the ones who have won trophies anyway, you will see that there is always two good full-backs. With two average full-backs they would not have won. But they had Carlos Alberto and Roberto Carlos, Jorginho and Cafu.

"[Traditionally] when you play against a 4-4-2 the two strikers stop your centre-backs so the full-backs get the first ball from the goalkeeper.

"If your full-back gives ball back to the keeper or cannot get out of a tight situation you have to kick the ball forward.

"Against a 4-5-1, the trend now, the two centre-backs become more important as the full-backs are 'blocks' and the centre-backs get more of the ball.

"So the quality of their passing becomes very important."

He's just copying Spidey.

So is Andre Villas Boas.

High defensive line ? Check
HIgh tempo pressing up the field ? Check
Attacking fullbacks ? Check

Worst Chelsea side in recent years ? Check.

Oof

But i do agree with what he says about the need for your Center Backs to bring the ball forward against 4-5-1 which happens to be the norm, and defensively solid fullbacks.

We have had our best result this season, when Enrique and Kelly have played on opposite flanks. I'd like to see this back four given a run...

Kelly....Skrtel....Agger.....Enrique.

I do hope Coates matures into a beast of a footballer at the back, then that defensive line up will look pretty good with Reina in the goal.

Spain have named an experienced squad for their friendly matches against England and Costa Rica this month.

Vicente Del Bosque has chosen not to draft anyone in for a first call-up

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Jose Reina (Liverpool), Victor Valdes (Barcelona); Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Alvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Jordi Alba (Valencia), Raul Albiol (Real Madrid), Nacho Monreal (Malaga); Xavi (Barcelona), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Santi Cazorla (Malaga), Javi Martinez (Athletic Bilbao), Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona); David Villa (Barcelona), David Silva (Manchester City), Fernando Torres (Chelsea), Fernando Llorente (Athletic Bilbao), Juan Mata (Chelsea), Jesus Navas (Sevilla).

Guillem Balague:

Unfortunately, since leaving Villarreal for Benfica last summer, Capedvila has suffered a massive drop in form. This has led Del Bosque to give opportunities to both Nacho Monreal of Malaga and Jordi Alba from Valencia - but omitting Jose Enrique from this week's 23 man squad.

Alba played at left back in Spain's last game, the 3-1 win against Scotland, and impressed with an assist and some terrific attacking play. Alba isn't the best defender, but Del Bosque likes him as someone who offers a genuine attacking threat from a full-back position - again, making the team more like Barcelona than before (Alba started out as an attacking midfielder at La Masia, before joining Valencia and being converted into a left back by Unai Emery).

Good.

One player to travel halfway round the globe for a shitty friendly really is enough.

Just look at that squad .... Fuck a duck .... Although I'm fairly ambivalent toward England nowadays I'm still with enough residual affiliation to them not to want to them completely munched as the most certainly will be on the weekend.

It is going to be a cricket score.... Even Torres will score.... I will be genuinely amazed if they turn up if they don't get at least 4.

It'll probably be 2-0 or 2-1 to Spain.

I think I'll try to find the lost city of Atlantis if England win.

BTW I thought Nathan Dyer gave Jose a really tough time on Saturday - first time this season I've really seen Enrique under continued pressure. Good little player is Dyer.

Dyer did cause enrique some bother but Enrique eventually adapted forcing Dyer to switch from right to left over the course of the game

Well that might also have been fine. It might even have been better. No way of knowing is there?

SPANISH SYSTEMS
A great read as always. Very introspective of the way Del Bosque's mind must be working. Some important points, Jordi Alba is the future for the left-back position for Spain once he makes the position his own. Enrique was never a player suited to the Spanish style of playing. I don't think San Iker's position can ever be brought under scrutiny. I don't think either Llorente or Torres really suit their style and a trident of Silva-Villa-Mata makes a lot of sense. On that note, I wanted to ask, whom does Del Bosque rate higher? Mata or Navas? Luv Shukla (Chelsea fan)

GUILLEM SAYS: I completely agree with your analysis about Spain. Jordi Alba is the future at left-back and the reason that Jose Enrique hasn't been called up yet is because there's an impression that he's not much better. There is more trust in Jordi Alba and Nacho Monreal, but I'd question whether Monreal is better than Enrique and I believe he should be called up, at least to give him a try. He could replace some of the work that Joan Capdevila used to do for Spain; he wasn't the greatest full-back, but he was good on set pieces. However, Capdevila was better than Enrique defensively.

Also, with this team that builds from the back and attacks with a high defensive line, some people would say that Victor Valdes is better suited as goalkeeper... but there's a reason why he's called San Iker

You say Fernando Llorente or Fernando Torres aren't suited to the side, but Spain have so much versatility. They can play the way they did against England, but they can also play with wingers and use Llorente - and that makes the side stronger. I would always call up those two. As for Juan Mata and Jesus Navas, I'd say Mata is preferred, but they are completely different players. Mata plays between the lines, but Navas is a winger and that gives you two different possibilities.

His forward play sometimes leaves a little to be desired but you can't fault his amazing work rate sprinting down the Wong constantly, then getting straight back into position.
Defensively he has been an absolute rock. Hardly loses headers and you feel so confident when he's faced with one on ones.

I like Johnson but being a Kelly fan I'd love to see him given another go at the right.
