English arrogance

I keep reading and hearing how it's a formality that we will beat Algeria tonight. FFS - haven't we learned anything from past errors? The first thing you should do is show respect to your opponents. Obviously it's not that big a deal if supporters dismiss them (except in a purely karmic sense), but England's players should know better. Thanks a lot, Rooney...

On Wednesday, Manchester United striker Rooney expressed confidence that England would beat Algeria to move within touching distance of the last 16.

"Against Algeria we can not be at our best and win the game," said the 24-year-old.

When asked what he knew about England's opponents, Rooney replied: "Not much. Belhadj from Portsmouth, but I don't really know much more about them. I'm sure the manager will point out their strengths and weaknesses to us."

To be fair if England don't beat Algeria then they'd be in trouble.

I think it's not exactly arrogance but confidence.

There's a fine line between arrogance and confidence. The fact that rooney thinks we can beat them when we're not on our best and that he knows very little about them is very arrogant IMO. Ignorant too

To be fair on the lad, I wouldn't say it's so much ignorance or arrogance, I think he's just a bit dim. He said 'erm' about 25 times the other day in a 30 word interview. He made Gerrard look like fucking Shakespeare.

you make a point. Idiocy never helps

25 year old 'highly educated' ,multi-millionaire, scouse scally in arrogance shocker.

Perhaps he should field tricky questions with 'no comment' at press conferences?

How sensitive are some people.

Ha, this is obviously true. But his comments are still symptomatic of a general English malaise. If most English players/people had a humble, open-minded attitude to the world, this wouldn't be the default setting, even for really thick people. He'd just repeat the obvious Rafa-isms about them being a good team and England needing to find their true form etc. The fact is that the English as a people still seem to believe that they're the centre of the world, the best at everything, and that foreigners, especially ones you've never heard of, are bound to be inferior.

OK, rant over. I do think it's true though, in the most generalised way.

This is nothing to do with Wayne Rooney is it?

Looks like an opportunity has been taken for a pop at the English for whatever reason.

Maybe it's upto the clubs who bring these lads through to educate them on how to handle the press and how to show respect etc.

I think Rooney is right.

I mean a footballing superpower like England should be able to take care of Algeria even at half pace

Spain should have been able to take care of the Swiss.. There's no point in underrating the opposition or showing disrespect, because it just makes you look fucking stupid when you lose or come unstuck against them. Just give the a bit of respect and get on with the job of beating them. It's not like we pulled up trees in the last match.

I don't think a footballer should be slated for telling it how it is.

We're just so used to the whole media bullshit, 'they're a good team, well organised and we're taking them seriously zzz, etc' that we castigate them if they anything different.

You're all acting as arrogant as rooney by assuming he is correct. Being arragont is one thing, but in this case there is no reason to be arrogant. Algeria's team is not inferior. The only thing they lack compared to england is the ability to produce some individual brilliance or magic. But don't let that distort your judgement of how well they do all the other things. Becuase they play as well if nto better football than the english do.

Rooney is an idiot. But sometimes you fans don't pay enough attention to football teams. You're influenced by the past and by reputation. Has this season taught you nothing? Did the usa game teach you nothing? I fear for england today. They will fall

I think they will only fall half way.

Then you should know that there is a distinct difference in what you read in tub-thumping newspapers and the general attitude of you and your friends and others.

I have never felt that England winning is a formality or felt sufficient confidence to be arrogant.

In fact I would say that most English people do not have great faith in the England football team's capabilities. I don't think we need urging to be humble, many disappointments over many years makes it the default position of all but newspapers with sales to chase.

Jexy, I wasn't talking about newspapers, but the comments of people on this site - and in particular the comments of our star striker.

Dantes - that's the spirit!

Is it arrogance if it's true?

You lot SHOULD be able to beat Algeria without producing your best. You ARE a better team.

We'll beat Algeria, not so sure about Slovenia.

They look decent side.

I could see us drawing to them and finishing second. God I hope not.

The England players fell into this trap last time round too, they talked themselves up too much, it just meant there was a greater height for them to fall from.

Considering we can barely maintain possesion of the ball and conceeded the goal the way we did last week, I don't think any of the players should be talking us up. Say you'll do your best, you're determined and confident etc. But no one should be going beyond that.

I think in the main part the England team have been humble and respectful. And I'm not having that those Rooney comments aren't taken out of context.
Most fans are brickin it and just Want to get out the group.
Yes we should win, but I think there's a much more realistic feel about our expectations this time.

Yeah, I totally agree with that, last time everyone actually seemed to believe we were gonna win it, this time everyone's hoping, which is how it should be.

But I think everyone believes we'll go past the group stages, which after this game, I'm starting to feel increasingly nervous about.

I was astonished to hear in this morning that England sat down and watched a video of Algeria yesterday (Thursday) for the first time.
