Emre Can

There's a lot of journos appearing to agree that it is pretty far on. Of course, it may be one journo (from goal.com or something) and the rest are piling in. Makes sense for them to sell now before Bayern can have first refusal, and 12m for a player they bought last year for 4.5 must be tempting. Feels right to me.

let's hope this is not the german alberto. fee still looks hefty for one good season.
Not even remotely similar. Alberto was playing for barcelona B and was average in that and can is playing in the bundesliga and has played well. We bought coutinho and studge(good loan spell at bolton and that's about it) without either one having one full good season. Looking to buy lallan based on one good season so why should emre can be any different.

Personally think that £12m for Can is great business so long as he's as good as his reputation suggests.

Hopefully this lad proves to be brilliant if we sign him...but £12m for a 20 year old when Rodgers has stated he wants established players ready to go straight into the starting 11 is a bit odd to say the least.

Well, I would hope he is good enough to challenge Allen and Henderson straight away. If we're just going to do an Alberto with him, it'd be pretty shit.

It seems to be in keeping with FSG's policy. I doubt we are going to see any 'major' signing in the form of someone who may have already peaked, a la Kroos, and commands a big money transfer (30-35M plus) and continue to buy players who look like they have improvement in them, and that includes Lallana who could take the next step playing with a top team.

He's captained the German youth sides (U16/17/18/21) all the way through, right?

That's a massive plus right there.

Leverkusen want him to stay and Bayern want him to stay so they might use the buy back clause next season if he continues to develop. Think thats pretty positive from two clubs known to develop great young players.

He'll need time obvs but has all the right attributes imho.

I'd prefer any signings were in keeping with Rodgers policy. The man in charge of team affairs.

I think you're being a bit too narrow minded and confusing ideal moneyball with FSG's new policy. Don't forget that they've used this new philosophy for just a few seasons now.

Even after implementing their new policy, the club had signed veteran players in the last few seasons. Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, etc etc. And based on how last summer panned out, a marquee signing seems fairly likely.

Every time I look at this thread title it bothers me that it wasn't called 'If anyone can'

a thread starting from Can, leads to discussion about a club's policy doesnt seem to be a good sign about the player, isnt it

I'm not sure Whirly. I don't doubt that FSG will be giving Rodgers a very good sized budget this Summer but I really don't think we will see any 'marquee signings' per se. unless Lallana is that signing and he doesn't fit many people's idea of marquee. I don't think they'd say no to a veteran like say Cole, if a reasonable deal can be done but that really is the exception.

I think we will see more players in the 15-20m range and some around 10m. I'm fine with that if the players are of the quality of Lallana, Konoplyanka, Loveren etc.

My point is that FSG's policy isn't super rigid. If they think the smartest move is to sign a big name player, and the numbers are right, they won't hesitate to pull the trigger. Similarly, they are willing to back off a deal if the value isn't there.

The goal is to be successful in the market as a whole, which doesn't necessarily hinge on a single approach.

Liverpool FC's pursuit of Emre Can is being hampered by the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder's wage demands.
The Reds have informed the Bundesliga outfit they are prepared to activate the £10million release clause in Can's contract.
However, Liverpool's first transfer of the summer is being held up due to ongoing negotiations with the Germany Under-21s international's representatives over personal terms.
Talks are continuing but the 20-year-old appears to be in no rush to sort out his future with Leverkusen still battling to convince him to stay put.
Bayern Munich, who sold him to Leverkusen for £4.5million last August, have a buy-back option but the German champions ideally want him to remain at Leverkusen with a view to a return to Bavaria next summer.
Brendan Rodgers believes Can's versatility would make him a real asset with Liverpool looking to compete for glory both in the Premier League and the Champions League next term.
The Frankfurt-born central midfielder, who is of Turkish descent, can also operate at left-back and centre-back.
He came up through the youth ranks at Bayern but left the Allianz Arena a year ago in search of first-team football.
Can scored three goals in 29 appearances to help Leverkusen finish fourth in the Bundesliga.

@thisisanfield: Turkish media reporting that a deal for midfielder Emre Can has been agreed betweeen Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen for £12m.

I know he can play at most places in defence/midfield, but where would he likely fit into the team? As a DM? That's captain unmovable's spot. Or would he be a 12mill bench warmer when Gerrard gets a rest?

Gerrard will need a break, and its either Lucas or Can that then get nod, seems like Can will play a fair few games this season...

Competition for Allen and Henderson for the two advanced CM slots. Something we desperately need.

And the occasional cover for Gerrard in the deep lying role.

Can he kick it, Emre Can
Can he head it, Emre Can
Can he score it, Emre Can
Can we win it, Yes we can
