I'm not sure if it's a case of me not watching as much football as I used to these days but it seems as though you don't really see many players who go for the neat tricks anymore.

Even Ronaldo doesn't seem to go for much other than pointless stepovers or weird leg shaking on the spot. Now he'd sooner pass or beat a man for pace.

So what's the deal? Am I out of the loop or have the silky skills died a bit of a death?

Someone get Neymar and more Brazilians to Europe stat.

Saw some cracking neymar skills the other day. He needs to come over soon!

Everyone else seems intent on playing it safe. The tricky players all have pave so, as you say it's easier and safer to kick and run.

We need a Figo!

it's a stupid pointless trick that the defender easily circumvents as long as he watches the ball rather than the player.
ronaldo became a much more effective player when he cut that shit out.

But it takes some of the technique and beauty out of the game

Downing has kicked and ran passed people. Its drab. Its snoozeville

but it's effective, he (downing) needs it do that more, not less.

Its not why i'd want to watch the game though. Effective yes (providing he can do something with the ball)

I prefer players to be humiliated. It'll ruin their confidence for the game or force a foul

look at the chance he carved out for carroll early second half, I have no problem if he did that all game.

BUT ITS SO DULL!!

Id rather a player absolutely ribbon a defender with skill like suarez would rather than kick and run.

Benzema has a few step overs in his locker.
I would like to see him try them out in a Liverpool shirt.

If you want to be entertained go to a fucking circus😉

That's just not true; Ronaldinho was using a variation of it for a while and the best defenders in the world still got caught by it. If the defender doesn't know what you're going to do then he can't defend it fully; the question is whether you can have him in two minds or if he knows, 9 times out of 10, what you're going to do.

Forgetting Elasticos (what the hell are they anyway ? ) and stepovers , it seems to me that players very rarely beat a man nowadays ...or at least take them on 1 on 1 like in the past . And it's a pity because beating a man is the one thing that gets a defence shitting it , they're stretched out of position and 'panic' .

So Why is that ?

Formation changes and everyone playing 4-3-3 so no wingers ?
Too much caution ? , christ us of all teams love to knock it back or square to play it safe .
Defenders too good to beat ?

I miss (good) Ronaldinho.

The number of players football has seen that were as creative and entertaining as him you can probably count on one hand.

Couldnt agree more - a joy to watch with all the Sambatastic skills.

It should ptobably be noted that he was exceptional and hardly a fair benchmark for other players to follow and emulate

It wasn't just the tricks, it was the passes that no-one else saw, passing without looking... passing with his back!

Shame he didn't keep it going for a few years longer. Such a waste.

when you talk about pure skill, barnes was absolutely incredible. his brazil goal has got to be one of the best goals of all time.

Remember the CL game against Chelsea at the Bridge? He stood on the edge of the area with his foot fidgeting around the ball like it had epilepsy. Finally someone tries to close him down and he passed it into the back of the net from 18 yards. That was when Cech was at his best too and still looked bemused. I'm still gobsmacked every time I see that goal.
