There isn't a post-match discussion thread, so I'll put my much-loved ratings and match summary here instead.
That was shit.
Really, really, really shit. A fumbling, lacklustre, pedestrian display with a quite mesmerising amount of mistakes, poor decision-making and dreadful individual performances. Southampton played well, and totally bossed midfield, while Redmond caused havoc in our defence, and should have had a hat-trick. The only positive is that there is a second leg at Anfield, and we're only one-nil down, but more worrying was the bigger issue: we aren't creating chances and we cannot cope with the absence of Mane and Henderson, nor can we afford to rest out of form players.
But this slump, if it is that, was coming. You can't maintain that high level of intensity and performance, which is why we need a bigger and higher quality squad, and also more matchwinners. Anyway, the RAAAAAAAATINGS:
Karius (8) Made two decent saves and looked impressive. There's still something unnervingly jittery and marionette-like about his movement, but was our best player
Clyne (5) Below his usual level, he was unable to add anything in attack, and was on the back foot far too much. Not a great return to his old club. But he was not alone there
Lovren (5) Reverted to his old manic ways, he left plenty of gaps during his forays up and across the field, as he chased the ball and caused the defence to lose shape. Made a great clearance off the line, but was never in control of dangerous situations, reacting rather than containing
Klavan (4) Another ragged, clumsy display, strewn with positional errors and clumsy mistakes. Will be thankfully back on the bench where he belongs when Matip returns
Milner (4) Off the pace from the start, he didn't look comfortable at all, and was a yard short all over the pitch. Wasteful in possession too, and looked vulnerable to the pace of Redmond
Lucas (4) Typical Lucas performance. Played simple passes, often to player standing less than 5 yards away, and didn't move much from his holding midfield position. His laughable lack of pace meant that he was overrun at will by Romeu and co, and had to resort to his usual clumsy fouls when players turned him. One late chase down the left flank ended up with an comical, embarrassing and desperate clutch and tumble, as yet another Southampton player skipped effortlessly past him. Should never, ever play in midfield for Liverpool again
Can (3) Amazingly, played even worse than the hapless Lucas. He resembled a caterpillar who has had all but two of his legs removed. The brain was telling his body when to move and in what direction, but his stuttering limbs simply couldn't do what he wanted. His passing was catastrophic, and it looked like he'd coated his boots in the same grease he uses in his immaculate hair. Dismal.
Wijnaldum (4) He was often criticised at Newcastle for being almost invisible, and this was Wijnaldum at his most ghost-like. Failed to exert any influence on the game at all.
Lallana (4) Playing higher up the pitch exposes his lack of pace, and he reverted to the form that made Liverpool fans question his quality; slow in thought and movement, and held onto the ball too long, before releasing it in the wrong direction.
Firmino (4) You always get a decent workrate. There's just hardly anything else at the moment. Has now scored a miserable ONE goal in his last 10 games. Of course it is unfair to burden Firmino with that task of scoring goals as he isn't a natural goalscorer as we all know, but we are entitled to expect more. One-paced and lacking in any threat. Should be dropped, but we don't have the squad depth to do so. Needs to improve.
Sturridge (4) Yes, he got no service at all. But that doesn't mean running about is not allowed. He dropped deep to get the ball, but then ran into trouble or gave it away, or simply fell over. Once again, the question about the effect injuries have had on his movement and explosive pace have to be raised, because he looks almost hobbled at times.
Subs:
Coutinho (6) Great to see him back, and the palpable relief of his under-performing team-mates was evident, as they simply decided the only way to win was to give him the ball at every opportunity, and then hope he could do it all on his own. But he can't, and was reduced to wild shots as there was no movement or runs ahead of him
Origi (5) He's clearly not the most gifted striker around, but in his 8 minutes at least he made some runs and tried to hold the ball up.
