EFL Cup Semi (1st Leg) Southampton (away) Match Thread

He hopefully wont play Lucas again. I'll admit he wasnt the worst out there last night but he offers next to nothing and is so slow it hurts. Had to laugh when he fell to the ground on a couple of occasions.
He's got the upper body strength of a 12 year old girl.

He wasn't great but at least he was better than Can (not hard) who took about 3 days to release the ball and put in one of the worst individual performances I've ever seen from a Liverpool player.

Needs a kick up the hole that lad.

So who still thinks we should keep Sturridge?

People who harp on about his finishing abilities (which are great, but have resulted I think in ONE season in his career with 15+ league goals ... ONE) and ignore everything the obvious issues.

I sincerely hope we fleece someone for 40 million ...

I've never said he isn't a talented player but we haven't see the player we need since 13/14

Two goals this season and he's had even minutes to get a lot more.

Sell him and get a player who has a better fitness record of similar or better quality.

It's not fitness record that bothers me - I'd take the Studge of 13/14 for 30 games a year, because that would give us 15-20 goals imo. He's that gifted.

He's just not the same player anymore ...

He doesn't fit the team, and the absences of Mane and Coutinho have forced Klopp's hand, he should have been playing Origi last night who we know fits in the style of our team. Studge just doesnt have the industry or clever movement about him to fit into our attack against a parked bus. He has shown a good ability to be an impact sub recently, but nothing more.

industry - agree
clever movement? I always thought Studge made smart runs, creative passes etc ... I realize that's not much a part of his game, but did I 'imagine' him being that way a few years ago?

In the counter attacking days of Suarez, Studge & Sterling his darting diagonal runs to move defenders all over the shop was great. I don't feel he has the same ability against a parked bus to make moves into space that can really shake things up.

That wasn't an easy game for sturridge to stand out in, there wasn't much space at all. His little step overs and shimmies that get him the room to shoot mean nothing when he's up against an abundance of defenders.

Coutinho will help his game by giving the opposition another danger to worry about.

There isn't a post-match discussion thread, so I'll put my much-loved ratings and match summary here instead.

That was shit.

Really, really, really shit. A fumbling, lacklustre, pedestrian display with a quite mesmerising amount of mistakes, poor decision-making and dreadful individual performances. Southampton played well, and totally bossed midfield, while Redmond caused havoc in our defence, and should have had a hat-trick. The only positive is that there is a second leg at Anfield, and we're only one-nil down, but more worrying was the bigger issue: we aren't creating chances and we cannot cope with the absence of Mane and Henderson, nor can we afford to rest out of form players.

But this slump, if it is that, was coming. You can't maintain that high level of intensity and performance, which is why we need a bigger and higher quality squad, and also more matchwinners. Anyway, the RAAAAAAAATINGS:

Karius (8) Made two decent saves and looked impressive. There's still something unnervingly jittery and marionette-like about his movement, but was our best player

Clyne (5) Below his usual level, he was unable to add anything in attack, and was on the back foot far too much. Not a great return to his old club. But he was not alone there

Lovren (5) Reverted to his old manic ways, he left plenty of gaps during his forays up and across the field, as he chased the ball and caused the defence to lose shape. Made a great clearance off the line, but was never in control of dangerous situations, reacting rather than containing

Klavan (4) Another ragged, clumsy display, strewn with positional errors and clumsy mistakes. Will be thankfully back on the bench where he belongs when Matip returns

Milner (4) Off the pace from the start, he didn't look comfortable at all, and was a yard short all over the pitch. Wasteful in possession too, and looked vulnerable to the pace of Redmond

Lucas (4) Typical Lucas performance. Played simple passes, often to player standing less than 5 yards away, and didn't move much from his holding midfield position. His laughable lack of pace meant that he was overrun at will by Romeu and co, and had to resort to his usual clumsy fouls when players turned him. One late chase down the left flank ended up with an comical, embarrassing and desperate clutch and tumble, as yet another Southampton player skipped effortlessly past him. Should never, ever play in midfield for Liverpool again

Can (3) Amazingly, played even worse than the hapless Lucas. He resembled a caterpillar who has had all but two of his legs removed. The brain was telling his body when to move and in what direction, but his stuttering limbs simply couldn't do what he wanted. His passing was catastrophic, and it looked like he'd coated his boots in the same grease he uses in his immaculate hair. Dismal.

Wijnaldum (4) He was often criticised at Newcastle for being almost invisible, and this was Wijnaldum at his most ghost-like. Failed to exert any influence on the game at all.

Lallana (4) Playing higher up the pitch exposes his lack of pace, and he reverted to the form that made Liverpool fans question his quality; slow in thought and movement, and held onto the ball too long, before releasing it in the wrong direction.

Firmino (4) You always get a decent workrate. There's just hardly anything else at the moment. Has now scored a miserable ONE goal in his last 10 games. Of course it is unfair to burden Firmino with that task of scoring goals as he isn't a natural goalscorer as we all know, but we are entitled to expect more. One-paced and lacking in any threat. Should be dropped, but we don't have the squad depth to do so. Needs to improve.

Sturridge (4) Yes, he got no service at all. But that doesn't mean running about is not allowed. He dropped deep to get the ball, but then ran into trouble or gave it away, or simply fell over. Once again, the question about the effect injuries have had on his movement and explosive pace have to be raised, because he looks almost hobbled at times.

Subs:

Coutinho (6) Great to see him back, and the palpable relief of his under-performing team-mates was evident, as they simply decided the only way to win was to give him the ball at every opportunity, and then hope he could do it all on his own. But he can't, and was reduced to wild shots as there was no movement or runs ahead of him

Origi (5) He's clearly not the most gifted striker around, but in his 8 minutes at least he made some runs and tried to hold the ball up.

Agree with most there.

Would give Studge a 2 and Klavan a 6 (I thought he was actually quite decent apart from his first half clanger) and perhaps Coutinho a 7 as he instantly sparked some life into our otherwise hapless attacking performance.

Lucky to still be within reach of a final here, I am worried about the weekend though. Our players look very tired.

Does anyone who has more knowledge of the bundesliga than I do (ie, any knowledge at all, because I know the team names and that's it) know whether Matip's injury record for us this season is par for the course?

I recall reading something that suggested he wasn't particularly injury-prone, although he missed 10 or so games in his last season due to an ongoing injury problem with his foot or ankle or something.

Fair ... but I think you missed off a few reallys.

I'm trying to stay positive. Does anyone think that maybe we played last night with Sunday on our minds? I know it shouldn't happen. But maybe subconsciously it was holding the players back.

I'm just a bit concerned that he's going to be another player that we talk about in terms of 'it'll all be ace when he's back' and yet is injured half the time - as we spoke about Sturridge after Suarez had gone. We desperately need stability at the back and a centre-back partnership that is firstly good but also has had a decent length of time playing alongside each other.

We've looked disjointed and lacking in balance since Hendo got injured. He cannot come back quickly enough.

Hard to argue with those ratings bar Sturridge.
He deserved a 2 max and was easily the worst player on the pitch which is some fucking achievement.
He absolutely stunk the place out.

I don't think so. We just played badly and missed our best midfielder, best defender and best attacker, our usually reliable players were mediocre to poor, and our reliably shit players were shit.

Fractured foot and bruised foot in 14/15 seems to be the only injury in his Schalke career that were for any longer period of time.
So, I'd say that he hasnt got any injury issues.

What I learned from that game is that we lack pace and that our defence is allergic against it.
Also, we need more creative players in midfield, fuck me what game changer Coutinho is. We need another one.

Whoever was responsible? They should be painted with sulfur and Lime and dropped in a vat of ethanol.

Question, does away goals count in the league cup? I mean if we win by 2-1 in the return leg does it go to extra time?
