we just seem inept to mix up our style of play....route 1 won't always work.. we're not being given space so we panic. side to side eventually leading to lucas or can floating a long ball out of play.

We need like a Giroud in the side. 1 cross and goal.

oh and a decent crosser of the ball. Sigurdsson and Giroud.
It's no secret we have a thin squad, instead of buying to Bring a different dimension to what a threadbare team missing key players in bad spell undoubtedly brought on by tiredness, why not bring in more players offering the same to ensure they can be more effectively rotated in a season?

I mean, Oliver Giroud, fuck me.

Giroud scores goals, lots of them...from crosses too.

I'm just saying we need to mix up our play...we have no width, we get to the ball out to milner or clyne and they come inside.

Giroud has scored as many goals as Firmino, despite playing a quarter of the total minutes on the pitch

A quarter

It's amazing the difference in attitude with our players when they play strong opposition. Everyone works hard and our concentration levels are so much better when we play the so called big teams. Nearly all our problems this season have been against weaker opposition.
Is it poor preparation or lack of motivation? Or are they that arrogant that they think they don't have to work as hard against poorer teams and we can just outplay them.

GIroud isn't pacey but what is pace when you're intelligent and can make runs to beat a defender in the air? it's the easiest way to score a goal.

Get a crosser in your side, get a 6 ft 4 giant who's very good in the air and you have a way to win a game, simple.

where we go for 94 minutes passing passing passing and getting no where near the goal...it's a sham.

No I don't think it's preparation or a lack of motivation. We have honest players

We just don't have enough quality and when players have a dip in form, or are injured, the replacements are not good enough, and we are mediocre defensively

It's no secret to most fans that we need three or four more top quality signings in the next two transfer windows

We should buy Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing

We are tired, and exhausted - about now the other PL teams will start to up their game as it is now the serious business end to the season - what happens now till the end will decide who gets relegated and who wins the league. What is obvious now is that our team are tired - and Brendan (dare I mention him) - game a good account as to what we lack and what we have gained this season. The collective team spirit will get you so far and as so long as the opposition have not figured you out. In the last two games we have looked fucked - I am glad we have lost today as it may be a kick up the arse for some on Sunday. Right now all our hopes are on Coutinho being the man because Sturridge right now lacks confidence to make his presence felt in the penalty area, and the rest are average or a little above average. We really more than anything need someone to play up front with pace - what Mane provides us is that one man threat with his pace and willingness to get past players. I don't think I saw Clyne go right up the pitch once tonight, and our passing is off. Everything was slow.

The good thing is - that we get another go at this lot at home. Hopefully we will be upto the task and get to the final. My main concern is of course for Sunday fuck knows what will happen as they (United) can be as bad and shit as us tonight, and we may raise our game but do we have the players to do the shit ? - I have no idea.

Klopp says "the best thing about tonight was the result" and admitted Southampton should have won by more.
Maybe i was being a bit harsh on Jurgen and he assesed the game quite fairly. Doesn't explain why we weren't much better in the second half though after his team talk. A lot of the time recently his half time teamtalks have given us a lot more impetus than we had tonight.

Blimey. I remember us winning the league, playing the cup final (with an unrested Clemence) and then heading off to a European Cup final. Mind you, by that stage, we were used to winning stuff.

Back then our players were of a higher quality than what we have now - both technically gifted and with good footballing brains. These days the primary focus is on physical conditioning and playing to a system.

Wow. Thanks for that insight. I guess it's quite a miracle we've only been a semi-shambles this past fortnight.

@davud graham - it is the pace that makes the difference. Pacey players glide into positions and can pull defenders away from their marking areas creating space for others. Also the ability of a player to take on others also creates space for the rest of the team. We were so slow and lacking tonight without Mane that Southampton managed to stay in their defensive positions - we rarely attacked them in their penalty area or beat the last man well enough to put a dangerous ball in. Terrible game - and a set of bad results - hopefully this is the bottom of the barrel moment before we get out of the shit-hole. I don't blame Klopp - he is getting the best out of a team without a recognized goal-scorer,but I will blame him if he don't sign anyone. We know he likes pacey energetic players - he just needs to sign one.

I look at it a different way - the other teams have been in a more of a shamble than us; and that is why our system has wrecked havoc on them. It is thanks to Klopp taking the pre-season games so seriously that we are 2nd in the league.

He hopefully wont play Lucas again. I'll admit he wasnt the worst out there last night but he offers next to nothing and is so slow it hurts. Had to laugh when he fell to the ground on a couple of occasions.
He's got the upper body strength of a 12 year old girl.
