Downing

I think we'll get him for 20m. villa don't want to get and I doubt kenny wants to start te new season without a dedicated left midfielder. I also think downing is kenny's first choice.

15m and cole should do it

I don't want us going near 20m. We might as well by a winger worth that for that price (as well as mata obv)

just needs to think of who..

BASTOS!!

Cole is on 90K a week isn't he?
How much is Downing on at Villa? I hope we won't be paying him more than 60K a week, so if we offload Cole and bring Downing in it's 1.5M a year saved, and if I remember correctly Cole still has 3 years on his contract, so it's ~4.5M saved.

We've become a selling club we've lost Alonso, Arbeloa, Mascherano, Torres and Kromkamp.
That's true, but we've managed to replace Torres and Arbeloa, we've got a replacement for Alonso now ( 😉) , and we've changed our style (hopefully) so we don't really need Mascherano ( 😉 again).
Only concern is that we're yet to replace Kromkamp...
haha. You got me. Was only kidding of course we're not a selling club.

Ithought you were kidding, and responded accordingly.
However, one could be forgiven for calling us a selling club following the loss of 3 major players in Alonso, Mascherano and Torres, none of whom we wanted to sell.
I really hope we're getting over the loss of that trio (Arbeloa is not in their level) with Kenny in charge and with the players we currently have and those we're gonna add to our squad.

Sure we've sold some important players but we're far from being a selling club considering that we have some great prospects in the club like Kelly who'd normally be wanted by every club in England.
We've been forced to sell and not because of economic problems like many other selling clubs.

We've always been a selling club; it just didnt look it because we usually bought better players to replace the ones who left.

When you replace good players with worse ones, is when the 'sellingclub' label sticks.

Anfield wide man Barnes has backed the possible arrival of Downing from Villa, and believes the club’s owners should dig deep to land him.”

He added: “I like Stewart Downing. Aston Villa struggled last year, but he was the shining light. He scored goals, he created chances and he played with intensity and desire.

“He’s a creative player, an attacking player. Downing and Ashley Young were the two best players at Aston Villa last year.”

If Liverpool can stretch a little bit further I would definitely go for Downing.

Daily Mirror’s John Cross feels that £15million is too much for the former Middlesbrough player and he doubts whether Downing is good enough to improve Kenny Dalglish‘s team significantly.

“I think we know Stewart Downing’s limitations,” he explains of the Liverpool target. “He’s a good Premier League player, but I think he’s always fallen slightly short when he’s stepped up to England level.”

“I think it’s strange that Liverpool – a club of that stature with that ambition – are willing to pay that sort of money for a player who I always think just falls short of making that next step up. He’s a good crosser of the ball and he’ll provide the natural width. But for me, he won’t dominate games.”

Reports suggest that Liverpool and Aston Villa will settle at a fee of £18million for Downing.

first of all, who the heck is john cross, second he says downing can cross (and he can) and that is exactly the reason we are buying him and third digger likes downing and that good enough for me.

downing can cross and that is what we need. sure, it would be good to have a player to leaves defenders trailing in his wake but these players are few and far between, right now we need someone who can deliver good quality into the box so we can start to see a return on our £35m outlay. downing is a proper crosser of the ball not like the floater shite that pennant used to deliver.

Yeah two good examples, though both are really just top tier players who can basically run the game at the height of their games, like Gerrard and others too. You can be an effective winger in a top side without controlling the game. The issue would be if we didn't have players with the class to step up and take games by the scruff of the neck, thankfully we have.

I did say "very few" wingers rather than "no wingers at all", but even then I'm not sure those are such good examples. Robben can be devastating at times but I'm not sure I've seen him *dominate* games. Ronaldo has done, but even that was often from a wider-ranging forward role.

In the World cup he was dominating games injured.

a 'selling club' is one that routinely sells its best players for profit because either they can't match their ambitions or can't afford to turn the money down. the only time in our recent history that i can think could remotely be seen to meet those circumstances is last summer, and even then it's debateable.

Hmmm this Downing deal isn't looking as nailed on today is it - McLeish's comments etc.

People seem to be missing something with this one - it's reported Villa have a strong interest in N'Zogbia so maybe they're hoping to get him in as a replacement for Downing? Makes sense.

So you are convinced paying 18 or 20 million pounds for an "Effective Player" is the right way to go about business?

Can cross and stays wide.....only Stewart Downing can do this in the whole wide world?

No matter how you dress it up. At this price it will be a bad bit of business, not to mention the opportunity cost of not being able to spend that money on a quality player. I hope we walk away. We can get him for less than 15 million in Jan easily.... If he is so very important to our squad. Anyway, for some people, the target is sneaking 4th. I don't think he is that crucial to get 4th place.

There are other fish in the pond....we should be looking at them.

Like who? Is what they asked me, when I basically said the same...so I'm asking you.

I was using those examples toshow how misleading that label was.

We lost our best players because they felt they could do better elsewhere, it was only a crucial factor for us because we failed to replace them properly.

Losing Keegan wasnt so bad, losing Souness was a bit crappy, but losing Xabi and Macherano for Aquilani and Poulsen was quite a different story.
