Downing

Mata is at a higher level then Downing already, has more potential and is quite a lot younger.

It's a no-brainer. Let's hope Kenny becomes less fixated with overpaying for 'Prem-proven' players.

One of the more credible lads on Rawk say a fee is about to be agreed around the 16 mill mark.

Can someone change the title to Downing the new Barry.

Steady Eddie player from Aston Villa,
Paying over the top for an 'England International/Prem proven player'
We bid, it's rejected
They say they won't sell him ever.

I think the "Downing left foot-Carrolls noggin" combination will shit goals this season.

as long as carrol manages to guess which ball is real and which one is down to the double vision

Just passing it on.

Talksport also said Villa might take Cole as part of the deal.

That'd be ace, get his wages off the bill.

Provided it's not just a loan deal or they agree to pay those wages, that is.

Any price known, hope its not 20million!

Respect to YNWA guy, but I think nothing will be sealed until he's standing holding the shirt getting his photie taken. McLeish is coming into a hostile environment and selling off his best players at any price will be hard for him to countenance. I can see him being told he's staying put until they've lined up a quality replacement.

Yeah. I am chuff with Chuck signing, especially if 7m is true.

Alex McLeish insist Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing is not for sale after the club rejected an initial offer from Liverpool.

Sky Sports sources revealed earlier this week that Villa had turned down a £15million bid for Downing, who has two years remaining on his contract.

There has been speculation Liverpool will up their bid to £20m, but McLeish is determined to hold on to the player after losing Ashley Young and Brad Friedel in the transfer window already.

McLeish admits he has already spoken to Downing about his future and plans to speak to the former Middlesbrough favourite again when the squad returns for pre-season training.

Maturity
"He had a magnificent season last year and really came to full maturity as a top player," McLeish told the Birmingham Mail.

"I understand why there's teams interested in him and that is what happens when you play well consistently.

"His performances last season were top drawer. That's why he's not for sale. The club don't want to sell him.

"I spoke to him briefly last week and I intend speaking to him again when all the lads are back in for training."

Young left Villa Park for Manchester United last month and the departure of Downing would leave McLeish desperately short of proven options on the wing.

Villa have become a selling club. They've lost Barry, Milner, Friedel, Young and are now (probably) about to lose Downing. I've also read some speculation about Agbonlahor considerigna move to PSG.
We used to have a resident Villa fan here (Claret & Blue?). Would be (sort of) interesting to hear his take of their situation.

We've become a selling club we've lost Alonso, Arbeloa, Mascherano, Torres and Kromkamp.

That's true, but we've managed to replace Torres and Arbeloa, we've got a replacement for Alonso now ( 😉) , and we've changed our style (hopefully) so we don't really need Mascherano ( 😉 again).
Only concern is that we're yet to replace Kromkamp...

We replaced Kromkamp with Degen.
We replaced Dossena with Insua.
And replaced Diao with Poulsen.

3 for 3.
