Aston Villa reject £15m Downing offer to add to Liverpool’s frustration

Liverpool’s latest attempt to show their ambition in the transfer market has resulted in frustration after Aston Villa turned down an improved offer of £15 million for Stewart Downing.
Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool manager, has already suffered setbacks in his efforts to strengthen his squad at Anfield in the summer transfer window, including having an initial bid of £12 million for Downing rejected by the Midlands club.
But although Villa have privately and reluctantly accepted that they are unlikely to be able to keep hold of Downing beyond this summer, they are continuing to hold out for a fee in the region of £20 million for the left-sided midfield player. That valuation is based on the improvement that Villa believe Downing has made since joining from Middlesbrough for £12 million two years ago and the 26-year-old’s growing stature in Fabio Capello’s England squad.
But despite reports of interest in the player from Arsenal, Liverpool have the field to themselves and remain hopeful that a compromise can be reached on the fee, particularly as Downing, who recently entered the final two years of his contract, has made it clear that he is unwilling to commit his future to Villa.
Paul Faulkner, Villa’s chief executive, recently attempted to open talks about a potential new deal with Struan Marshall, Downing’s representative, only to be informed that the club’s player of the year wanted to keep his options open in the belief, later confirmed publicly by Downing, that he is “at a major crossroads” in his career.
Liverpool remain his favoured option but the determination of Randy Lerner, the Villa owner, to extract the highest possible fee from the sale means that Downing could be forced to submit a transfer request when he returns to pre-season training next week.
Having already sanctioned the sale of Ashley Young to Manchester United for £15 million during a turbulent summer in which Alex McLeish, the former Birmingham City manager, was controversially appointed as the successor to Gérard Houllier despite protests from fans, Lerner is acutely aware of the need to get the best deal for the club. But he also recognises the possible ramifications of retaining the services of a player who is keen to leave.
One possibility is that David Ngog will be used as a makeweight in the deal. The French forward is valued at £8 million by Liverpool and was close to joining Sunderland last month only for the transfer to collapse because of the player’s personal terms.
McLeish is keen to add more fire power to his squad because of Villa’s over-reliance on Darren Bent and is understood to be open to the idea of recruiting Ngog, who has fallen down the pecking order following the arrivals of Andy Carroll and Luis Suárez in January.
Liverpool are determined to sign Downing as soon as possible after seeing a number of transfer targets, including Phil Jones, Connor Wickham and Brad Friedel, end up at rival clubs. With Milan Jovanovic having been informed that he is free to seek a move away from Anfield after a poor debut season, Dalglish sees strengthening the left-midfield position as crucial, hence their continuing interest in Downing.
As things stand, Liverpool are set to embark on a pre-season tour of Asia at the weekend without a single new recruit in their squad.
Jordan Henderson remains the sole addition and the former Sunderland midfield player will not be in the party that visits South China, Malaysia and Singapore as a result of his belated return to training following his involvement in the European Under-21 Championship with England.
Steven Gerrard will also be absent after Liverpool decided that their captain’s recovery from groin surgery would be best served by continuing his rehabilitation programme at Melwood, the club’s training ground.
“I’m sure there will be supporters disappointed that Steven is unable to be with us in Asia, but I’m sure the same people will appreciate the importance of Steven giving himself the best possible opportunity of being fit to play against Sunderland on the opening day of the new campaign,” Dalglish said.
