That article is nearly as hysterical as this forum has been. While it's been frustrating, no one has started buying yet, so why the tension and worry surrounding us? City, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea are all yet to open their wallets, Arsenal are losing players left right and centre (well reportedly anyway), yet there are no questions being raised about any of them. They're all returning to training with the same squads. Everyone knows we need to offload alot of deadwood and that will inevitably play it's part because of wages, agreements over contract terminations and finding someone daft enough to buy them. It'll take time, unfortunately. Patience isn't a virtue in this sport, we all know that, but I'd be flapping more if it was the last week of August.
All the above have better squads than us
Except, none of them finished as winners last season, so you'd kinda think that they'd want to improve too.

Exactly.

Clearly a couple of our targets have simply been struck off the list due to interest from sides in a better position than us. There seems to be an assumption that "had we moved quicker" this situation would be in someway different, why? Lets be honest, be it now, the end of august, or even back at the beginning of June, we wouldnt have beaten Utd to Jones, Citeh to Clichy or Sunderlands price for Wickham.

So what does that leave? A host of players who are only just returning to pre-season after their holidays. Its not Champ manager where as soon as the market opens all the signings are made.

Bar a handful of signings, the whole of the premiership are in analysis mode - whats happened over summer; what does this mean regarding our top targets; who does that mean we are going after; how is the best way to make this happen.

Win what, the league? A top 4 finish should be our aim and 3 of the above came in the top 4 and thats my point, we are still behind as things stand.

Why weren't all of those suggesting this is a good move suggesting this 2, 12, 24 months ago then?

That's a moot point really, were we even linked with him 2, 12 or 24 months ago? Has anything happened to significantly lower anyone's expectations? He's a good player who I'd take as a massive improvement on what we've got. People seem blinded by our needs in other positions, as far as available options for the left wing go, I'd take him because he's proven he can be a success. We still need another attacking player, but that's a separate issue. In his position he's one of the best realistic, available options.

It's also fair to point out that he came on leaps and bounds last season in a struggling Villa side, so it doesn't really matter what opinions were a year or two ago, much of the backing he is getting is based on the fact he appears to be at a good stage of his career and improving year upon year.

Think you're the one being hysterical mate. Hysterical telling people that dare question LFC's transfer activity or lack of they're being hysterical when the reality is some are disappointed and bemused at what's going on.

We can sign an unproven 20 year old kid in Henderson and pay £16 million for him, and treble his wages yet we can't seem to fork out an extra few million for players we need - Adam, Enrique and Downing(or a winger of that ilk).

Now pre-season training has arrived with only one signing in the bag when all we heard was that we were getting our signings in early, granted it's easier said than done but i'm disappointed we haven't signed more players.

As for Chelsea, Arsenal and City...they're a level above us mate, We're not a top 4 Club and hence we need more quality coming into the squad to have a chance of being one.

You know fuck all about what is going on, that's what's hysterical about it. All we can do it surmise about what's going on behind the scenes, and the only logical way of doing that and questioning our activity is to ask yourself, what's the rest of the Premiership doing and why are they equally inactive?

I'm sure there's a reason, it's not that difficult to fathom. No one has said we're haggling over any fees for the sake of a couple of million, we're dealing with clubs who don't want to let their players go without a fight, it's nowhere near as cut and dried as you seem to constantly be making out.

We also signed Riera on the back of a good season for Espanyol (which in reality wasn't all that good) for the same reason - to provide balance. I suspect that should we sign Downing he'll probably prove to be better than Riera was because if nothing else he's more able to get up and down the pitch and doesn't play his best football on the halfway line. So that's something I suppose.

I don't give a shit what the rest of the Premiership is doing. All i know is that Liverpool desperately need improvements to the squad and after Comolli saying we're trying to get the players signed for the start of pre-season, we've failed on that front.

As i've already said, transfers are rarely straight-forward, i understand that but at the same time we're dithering over the sake of a few million. Deliberately offering peanuts in the hope these Clubs cave in whilst at the same time pissing off these Clubs we're trying to buy from, and leaving it open for other Clubs to come in for these players. It's poor bargaining tactics in my view.

Im not sure i agree and anyway as far as im concerned the more we haggle the less our chances of signing the exciting and highly talented established England international.

Haggle like fuck!!

A spiv like Oyston might well be trying to chisel some last-minute fee increase out of us by one means or another. Refusing to be hustled by the likes of him wouldn't count as dithering in my book.

Can't be any other reason other than the fee. Certainly in the case of Adam.
According to reports a week or two ago, their Chairman wouldn't even take calls, as happened in January too. Like I said, you don't know. Haven't you spent most of this thread bemoaning the fact that we're going to be overpaying for Downing? What if Villa are asking for £20m+? Are we the culprits then for not paying the asking price? There's got to be a line somewhere and we've got to be patient in some instances to bring the fee down, it'd be financial suicide (and God knows we've thrown it around enough of late) to just take the asking price and not try and knock them down to a more reasonable price, at least somewhere between our own valuation and the selling clubs.

I really don't know where you're coming from with this stance. So we've done it before that means we should do it everytime? Half the reason we're probably in this predicament is the reputation we've given ourselves of late for paying over the odds, it's a vicious circle and someone has to break it before it gets out of hand.

It's about as amateurish as it comes. So you've surmised that:

* we should continue paying over the odds, cos hey, we've done it already!

* We're haggling over all of our deals (or maybe just Adam now) for the 'sake of a couple of million', the ONLY explanation as to why we haven't signed everyone we've been in negotiations with.

I was replying to grjt's post, that's not the way i see it but we seem to be capable of paying well over the odds when it suits.

What pisses me off is we pay well over the odds for some players, but we can't pay the extra million or two for others. I'm sorry but i don't get it.

Of course the Blackpool chairman is by all accounts an awkward man to deal with... I do appreciate that, but at the same time we're still dithering and dithering over Adam. We either want him or we don't.

As for me saying £20 million is too much for Downing, yeah it's true but we either put up or shut up. We're going after these players but we're not putting the money on the table that will prize them away which to me is a concern.

Whatever way you look at it, we're dithering and for a Club that needs major investment in the squad, that's worrying.

It's not really the same is it? Suarez was an unknown quantity in this league and there was some fears whether he would adapt, settle etc. I was still excited as fuck after watching him in the world cup and countless youtube vids but didn't expect him to explode onto the scene for us straight away. We know all about Downing, we've seen him week in week out and know what he'll bring us. Balance, plenty of crosses and will chip in with a few assists etc. I'm not sure he is capable of having a similar impact to Luis. He'll improve us but won't lift us like Suarez has shown he can. I think the fee is the reason there is doom and gloom surrounding Downing.

In short:

"Thats not what I mean"

"Yadda
Yadda
Yadda"

"That is what I mean"

At least be consistent in your irritating whining...
