He's not elite rapid like Henry, Ronaldo etc but he'll be one of the quickest in our team without a doubt.

Makes me think back to KT days, this does. If anyone remembers NY Red/Brooklyn Red from those days, he was always a big Downing fan.

We've always been a selling club; it just didnt look it because we usually bought better players to replace the ones who left.

When you replace good players with worse ones, is when the 'sellingclub' label sticks.
a 'selling club' is one that routinely sells its best players for profit because either they can't match their ambitions or can't afford to turn the money down. the only time in our recent history that i can think could remotely be seen to meet those circumstances is last summer, and even then it's debateable.
I was using those examples toshow how misleading that label was.

We lost our best players because they felt they could do better elsewhere, it was only a crucial factor for us because we failed to replace them properly.

Losing Keegan wasnt so bad, losing Souness was a bit crappy, but losing Xabi and Macherano for Aquilani and Poulsen was quite a different story.
obviously. but you also said we've always been a selling club - we haven't and the only way you'd think that is by having no understanding of what the phrase 'selling club' means.

True. He's relatively quick, not lightening but he's skinned defenders many a time over the years.

We've always been a selling club in that our best players have often wanted to leave for greener pastures; it's never been an issue because we've usually replaced well.

BUt I guarantee you that if we'd replaced Kevin Keegan with Michael Ricketts you'd have seen people gnashing their teeth in sorrow and bemoaning the end of Liverpool and they'd be calling us a 'selling club'.

I don't mean we're a selling club the same way Ajax is.

BUt I don't really care so if you still have a bone to pick you can consider yourself proven right.

Hmmm this Downing deal isn't looking as nailed on today is it - McLeish's comments etc.

People seem to be missing something with this one - it's reported Villa have a strong interest in N'Zogbia so maybe they're hoping to get him in as a replacement for Downing? Makes sense.
Maybe they want Zog to replace Young.

Well not slow, but for a winger who are supposed to make an impact he is slow.

People don't half typecast players. You don't have to be ultra quick to be effective from wide and make an impact. He can make the room to get a cross, pass or shot in, as he's proven time and time again. I know we need some genuine pace in the side, but this whole "he isn't quick" stuff is just Brendan-syndrome. He's quick enough.

So true. 'Slosemi' etc etc. It was so tiresome.

The underlying point is valid however.

We have lacked pace in the side in recent years.
Yeah of course we have, we lack a genuinely quick attacker, though we do have players with 'enough' pace and Downing isn't slow either.

Didn't realise how good he was with his right foot, some of the balls he put in from the right wing were excellent, looks really composed too.

That, and he gets on the end of crosses from the opposite flank well.

I don't get the Downing hate on here. If he ends up at our club, I think he will do very well.

i've really come round to this signing - if it happens, obv. he's a good player with a bit of everything and he should really add another dimension to carroll's threat we really need to exploit, and i more or less hope it happens now, when i was dead against it a while ago. my main problem's with the fee for a 27 year old winger: £18m for a guy we'll probably only get 3-4 years of current level service from is, frankly, extorniate - but i'm getting used to that!

er, EXTORTIONATE...

The point many are making is Mark is that we still will lack a genuinely quick attacker if we spend 20M on Downing. I'm always surprised myself at how his right foot and left foot are connected to such a hugely average player, Tony Daley had a good season for Villa once, now he was pacey! Shite mind but...
