I don't mind signing Downing as long as we sign Fernando Torres as back up.
Quite.
Its hardly relevant who we buy, as long as we also buy players of a higher or a lower value at some point later.

& still improving and hopefully will continue to do so.
Loyalty - to the club, such as the efforts you have made to support KK.
Belief - that the transfers being engineered by KK / Comolli & Fenway are the right moves at the right time for the club. That doesn't mean that anyone's belief has to be all encompassing or blind ! Though it seems some people don't have any belief in these moves - even in part. All I'm seeing is criticism, except from a few more moderate posters.

It seems (throughout numerous threads - poor Spidey seems to take a hammering in this regard !) many people interpret comments here almost as polar swings ! I didn't say mediocre - but our team are no longer at the top level, the club is a different matter and pure statistics dictate it is - there is a huge difference between being mediocre and being at a level just below the current top teams in Europe.

I think it's ca. 75M not 85M and whether it's KK, Rafa or Hodgson, the proof is in the eating.

Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing & Charlie Adam won't improve our squad ? Sorry but I have to strongly disagree on that one. As for resale value - it's not often players at top clubs are sold for more than they paid for them - Torres an obvious exception - it's whether the eventually represent value for money over the course of their employ for LFC that matters.

Come on,Froggy.

'Loyalty v belief'?

'Club v team'?

They're just two sides of the same coin, mate.

The bottomline is that we're spending huge amounts on potential talent. Fullstop.

On the one hand you suggest this is because there's not enough belief in the moves being hatched by FSG, Kenny and Comolli. On the other hand you suggest that the talents we're seeing are the best players we can possbily get because we're now a mediocre shadow of what we used to be, seeing as we're not in the CL.

Which is it Froggy?

Elaborate master plan or realistic acceptance of mediocrity?

As for Spidey, he hasnt taken a hammering at all. His view that we're now steeped in mediocrity and we need to get in marginally better players so that we can ONE DAY dream of bringing in good players is shared by many on here.

With regards to club v team, this is basically a rehashing of the view that we're a shadow of what we used to be. In fairness there is truth to that.

But the only way to strengthen the team or club is to get in the best available players we can get. I dont think we're doing that, CL absence notwithstanding.

You are right though when you sway that resale value isntthe most important maeker in determing value. It's whether they're worth waht we paid to us.

Let's curb the Downing debate a little.

  • [li]
No one *really* thinks he's fucking shit, it's just frustration talking. Some believe he's a little better than others (but generally speaking he'd be on very few peoples list of first choice targets had we our pick this summer anyways).[/li]
[li]Some have greater faith than others in the master plan of the team proving to be greater than the sum of it's parts.[/li]
[li]Some have greater faith than others in Liverpool retaining some of it's pulling power.[/li]
[li]Some have greater faith than others in being able to pick up a Hernandez, Suarez or Arbeloa - a value for money signing[/li]

We'll know more as the season gets under way and it might be that everyone is proved right in the end - Downing might prove to be an effective signing for us, but we might see examples of a few players that were affordable that really would've helped us kick on.

Let's just wait and see.

I think most people are just pissed about the price quoted, not really about the players. We all knew that we need squad players, but getting squad players at an extortion price is another matter.

True, that's another factor.

There would be less of a backlash if he was coming for 10M. I don't think he'll cost 20M though.

I just want a left midfielder on the left rather than someone who can 'do a job' I feel the same about the right, kuyt should be played up front (where he is most effective).

whats worrying people is the fact we are willing to pay well over the odds for English 'talent'
£35 and £16 million so far spent already both at least 25% more than what we should have paid it seems.

Sooo, we were meant to be wrapping this one up by the "Close of Play" today. Anyone heard any rumblings?

Nah, we obviously need more in the middle.

7 just isn't enough.

£26m fee for him and Adam it seems..
based on?

Are people happy with that fee? £10million for Adam and £16m for Downing it seems. Although I prefer to look at it as £12m and £14m, which would be great business.

£11m and 15m is how i'm looking at it

we paid too much for adam if thats the case

These are just reports atm, they all seem to be saying the same amount, though alot of articles are saying £8m for Adam.
I'm looking at it as £10m for Adam, £13m for Downing and £3m pie budget
those add ons always fuck us up

Yeh, I think Adam is worth £11m, so good business there too in my opinion. Although i'm sure someone will remind me how many years he has on his contract =D

Villa paid 12.5M for him and he's on a long contract so we were never going to get him for what we deem to be a reasonable fee. 18M is reasonable given what Villa paid and the circumstances in which we're buying him. Feels like we're getting a little bit raped again.
